Why do we revisit this every single year? I honestly don't get it. The UC fans that think this job is a top 10 or even top 15 job are mistaken. Add in the fact that the Big East conference is gone and this job becomes what it always has been: above average. Mick loves Cincinnati and he continues to recruit well here. If Mick is such a bad coach, why does his name pop up at EVERY major job opening every single year? I hope Mick stays here for decades and if he does, I am confident that Final Fours will be in our future.

Don't worry, I'll be done posting in a few days once the Reds start up and I can shift my focus to the only team in this city that actually has a chance of competing for a championship. I've enjoyed the back and forth this season and I'll no doubt be renewing my tickets for next season as well. Hopefully I'm posting again before the start of the next football season because that means we'll have gotten an invite to the ACC.

If we're not playing to cut down the nets then what the heck are we playing for? Let's hope we're cutting down the nets in 2014.

it has been before and can be again. the question is if we have the right person to make it that way again.

that question is still being answered.

When was it ever a top 10 job? Sorry, I wasn't alive when Oscar played but if that is how far back you have to go, then I would argue it was never actually a top 10 job.

It may not be a top 10 job, but Cincinnati usually finishes near the top ten in "greatest programs of all-time" type polls. The reason it's not a top ten job is because the facilities suck, the school has a shoe-string athletic budget, and the fan support is not great. If the fan support was stronger, the first two problems might take care of themselves. I just don't know what it's going to take to pack Nippert and 5/3 on a nightly basis.

And I agree with UCBearcats along the lines that we need to have the mentality of trying to be a top ten program. Realistically, if Cronin stays here for the next couple decades a la Jim Boeheim, I reasonably expect him to take the Bearcats to the tournament an average of 4 times every 5 years and compete for a national championship at least 2 of those. I don't expect Cincinnati to be Duke or Kentucky, but I would like to see a national championship before I die (and I'm only 27, so I don't think I'm asking too much!).

winning is the cure! just keep winning and the fan base will get stronger

Kenyon Martin years..top 10 job. Dynamite uniforms, fanbase and players. I would assume any coach in the country would be interested.

Where were all these "big name coaches" when the UC job was available? I don't seem to remember them knocking on the door for the job. This 10% who can't let go of the past is the cause for the fanbase splinter. It still drives me nuts that it was perfectly acceptable to "just make the tournament from '97-'05 but now you have people saying UC fans are settling and we need a new coach. There is nothing Mick Cronin will ever do to sway this bunch. I am convinced of that. They disappear when the team wins and pop up at any opportunity to go negative. Again, let me ask where were those big name coaches when the job was available? And if some are NOW willing to look at the job IF it ever came open, guess who you'd have to thank.....Mick Cronin, because of what he's done to restoe the program.

I understand disappointment and a desire for more for the program. I do not, nor will never understand the pure dislike some have for this guy and have had from day one.

Mick needs a lifetime contract. He literally saved the program

Ugh. It'll be 2025 and Mick fans will be saying crap like this.

I liked the hire.
I still like Mick. He's gone to 3 straight NCAA Tournaments.
But.......

I think he still has some growing and improving to do as a head coach in these areas:
1. Recruiting - has been good not great. We've had 1 legit scoring low post player in 7 years - Yancy.
2. Offense - sucks. Is boring to watch which affects interest from the fanbase and probably attendance.
3. Player development - I really haven't seen any players have a big time improvement like you saw from Bobby Brannen, Kenyon Martin, Steve Logan, Eric Hicks, etc.........back in the Huggs days. And I'm not really that much of a Huggins fan. But this is a disturbing trend that our players seem to have low b-ball IQ's and stagnate in their development.

People have given many reasons why they have problems with Cronin. You chose to not accept them or call them baseless or childish. I am not opening it up again, but people do have problems with him. Legit problems. I am not a fan of Cronin, nor was I a fan of Huggs. But to act like people have no reason not to embrace this guy is to live in denial.

Can't speak for all but I called for a change after the Lance/Vaughn year. Since then I think Mick has done enough to keep his job. Number 3 is my biggest complaint. Especially the last sentence. I would love to see some basketball players instead of athletes and I'd like to see guys recruited that play a position instead of being recruited to mould to a position.

He has done enough to keep his job but, and you will disagree with me on this, Cronin is the face of UC basketball. And it is not a very likeable face. I do not mean physically, but personality wise. People talk about his loyalty on here, but that is not what is said in outer circles. The word loyalty and Cronin are more of an oxymoron than anything else. He does very little to promote the program or himself in a positive light. Having an open practice was a nice move, but those moments are too few. Opening up Midnight Madness again would be a great move, etc. His habit about making excuses instead of confronting problems is another quality he has. And it is not a likeable one. I also agree that he needs to stop recruiting "athletes" (since when was a basketball player not an athlete), and bring in actual BB players.
