Saving the Scholarship

Even though MC needs to win next year, it's the best move. Hopefully UC can get enough wins next year so that negativitiy goes down, and recruiting goes up. I really thought Lance coming to UC was a gamechanger, but the effect was minimal. Though I do think UC won a few more games with him.

I agree with the move, it definitely makes sense. I'm just very concerned as why we were forced to do it. Lord knows we were looking at a number of impact kids, many thought we'd even make room on top of the scholarship for more talent.

MC has to get 20+ wins out of this bunch. I hope they can step up and get it done.

I'd love to hear the thoughts on this. IMO, and I said it months ago, is that he's going to have a very tough time on the recruiting trail until his job is more secure.

I don't think that there were really many players out there that could have helped next year. The two that they appeared to have greatest interest in (Burton and Ratliff) chose other programs that better fit their needs. I don't think that this is an indictment on Mick ability to recruit. However, this coming summer we will know if recruiting has been hurt based on the ability to secure early commitments for the 2011 class.

I'm glad that they didn't add someone just for the sake of filling this scholarship. Next year's success has always depended on improvement of the returning players, and not on the production provided by a late signee.

good to hear he is laying off the remaining players of whom no one is better than the current team. Focus the attention on coaching up what you've got.

I agree you don't want to lock a kid in if he's not worth it, but I would look hard at any juco that could help us. He would at least have some experience and in 2011 he would be a senior and could help provide leadership to all the incoming recruits. I don't know that I like the idea of having all that many new faces in 2011. We complained about being young last year. I have no problem reaching a little for a juco that is polished and can shoot.

If things work out you wouldn't have too many new faces in 2011 in regards to the core team. You'd have veteran Cash, Kilpatrick, Parker, Dixon, and Gates. Plus second year guys like Jackson. You can afford to have a lot of new faces since you have a core team of experienced players. But like I said, that's if things work out.

I'm not opposed to adding a JuCo shooter IF they can help the team and actually get on the court for the Bearcats. Experience is only good if the players are actually getting playing experience. If there is not a JuCo shooter good enough to play, there is no sense in using the scholarship. Reaching a little is one thing, but I think that is what Mick has been doing in bringing some of these kids in for a visit or even just recruiting them. I think he found out (with some of the recruits, not all) that he was reaching more than he wanted to.

My thoughts:

This team is in serious trouble. We lost our top two players. Really the only two that could score somewhat consistently.

UC better get real good defensively because we might only be scoring 12 a night. uh ohh.

LOL. 12 a night is a little over the top but I understand your concern because I share it. I think we will find out a lot about Cash and Kilpatrick this year. If those two step up, and I think both are capable, we could be ok. If not, we could be in trouble.

We'll still get the same number of possessions and the same number of shot attempts. At the clips those two shot at we should have no problem replacing their numbers. There were plenty of times the Cats played better without Vaughn and/or Stephenson on the floor. I think people are worried way to much about losing those two players. This team should play better all around than they did last year and that alone should improve scoring.

Maybe? I hope... here is my question. What makes you believe this team should play better all around??

Im going strictly off numbers and our top two scorers are off the board. Yancy being our third is inconsistent at best. This coming from a team that already struggled to score.

Not a fan of this at all. This team needs someone who can score for next year. I think this team will only score 50 something points a game as it is right now. And that will not survive you in the Big East. We need a guard to come in and be a scorer. Right now, we dont have that player.

Agree.

Doesn't even have to be a scorer that dribbles well and gets to the lane. Give me a Field Williams, Nick Williams, or Darnel Burton type player. Those type of guys are always available. A guy that can come in off the bench and consistantly hit a jumper. What is he looking for? another one and done...

This past season Mick needed a shooter. Didn't have it. Now we lose 2 scorers, LS and DV and gain no shooter? How is that a good move?

In my opinion Deonta was not in one of our top 2 this year. Lance was a great player, but he really could not to a lot in a team offense, because he was inept without the ball in his hands. I wish we had him back, but I don't think his loss is devastating. I think our team ball will improve immensely this year. I think we will be fine. Cash-Parker-Kilpatrick will be a strong backcourt this year. A lot of ballhandlers who can get to the basket. Shorter rotation-stronger defined roles this season.

I don't like this one at all. But what else can you do?

Every single player Mick was after went some where else. For a guy who is suppose to be this great recruiter, he sure did get beat up on the trail this year. Kids choosing Utah, USF, Mizzo, and freaking Nevada has pushed me to the edge.

Fans who are looking at killa and JJ to come in and save this season are just holding on to something to keep hope alive. IMO, these are role players on good basketball teams. 7th or 8th off the bench. Not players you talk about being stars. I hope I'm wrong.....but I don't think I am.

This past season was so important for so many reason. He failed, and I belive we are seeing the effects of it now.

I've had Mick's back since day one. Went toe to toe on many message boards defending him like a brother. After last season and the recruiting period this year, sad to say, he has lost me.

This is a best case scenario and I think very possible.

Lance is a big loss because of what I think he could have become next year. Replacing what he gave us next year isn't a big task though. He was our leading scorer, but he didn't shoot a high percentage, get to the line enough, and he turned the ball over too much. I still wish he was coming back, don't get me wrong, but the production we lost wasn't great.

And Deonta is not a big loss. I am thankful for what he brought to the program, but he simply isn't a big loss.

And I strongly agree with your last 3 sentences. We will get better because our players will improve and learn how to better play together.
