'11 IN PG Marquis Teague (Kentucky Verbal)

Help Support BearcatTalk:

Criticism and negativity can be two different things. This is essentially a positive board, but it is not without criticism. Negativity, to me, is more of a mindset that is neither constructive, nor appealing. Also, it leads to ad hominem attacks (the individual, not the linked argument usage!) that can divide a fanbase.

His dad was the deciding factor, what his dad read on BCN and BB put a very bad light on UC's chances to have Marquis become a Bearcat. In January Teague was UC's to lose and BCN and BB lost him for UC.

I think Ralph is likely right that Teague verbally committed to Mick in January, but held off making it public due to the negativity of the UC fanbase. BUT, even if he did, I'm not convinced that he would have stayed with UC and not changed his mind. As we have seen, early verbal committments aren't worth much. It sounds like UK got on him late and he still chose them. I think the lure of Calapari and WWW would have been too much to resist. If his relationship with Mick was not strong enough to overcome the negativity by a faction of the fan base, then Louisville would have been the next logical choice. Rick Pitino was on him for as long as Mick and he publically said he loved the coaching staff there. If any fan base feels worse than us tonight, it is Louisville, as everyone thought he was a shoo in to go there. Losing him to their hated in-state rivals makes it even worse for them. I think to get over the top Mick needs to get us into the NCAA's. Just the fact that he was there to the end with a recruit like Teague speaks volumes about his recruiting ability. There will be other recruits of Teagues' caliber in the future and Mick will eventually be able to reel them in. The fan base needs to get behind the program, and Mick needs to win on the court. Unfortunately the former is not likely happen before the latter. We all need to pull for the program this coming season, go to FTA and cheer for the Cats, and when they start winning, we will not lose these type of prospects to other programs.

I dont believe that he told Mick he was coming. Not for one second.

I will say many many people not named Ralph said peoples negativety towards Mick was a huge concern for Teague.

I dont blame UC's fanbase for wanting more

I don't either. I do however believe some go overboard with the "He can't develop players" and "UC will never be anything under Cronin" as well as the players don't respect him. That does paint a bad picture for players and parents. There is a constructive and respectful way to disagree or voice your opinion. People need to realize, it's about the program and not one person. I have been on record saying I thought if the team didn't make the NCAA this past season we should change directions. That didn't happen. I still support the program and will disagree with the coach where warranted. I will not paint a doom and gloom picture for anyone that reads this site, because I do believe in the future of this program.

Mick Cronin i think has done a beyond wonderful job of recruiting these kids its hard to beat someone out who is cheating. We all have to face it that for who he is and who he has followed and what school he came from that we are going to get beat out for the elite talent however he is getting the best players hes going to get!!!! Theres nothing we can do I definately dont agree with everything on the court MC does but who wants to come play in a arena that we the supposible fans cant even fill half way. I think he needs to take on the role of gary williams the maryland headcoach and get players that are overlooked and have something to prove!!!! until he starts winning games in march and us fans start really coming and supporting our team we are screwed!!!!! We will win a few recruiting battles but not all. I love UC so much and will be a fan always and i think we need to support the team or find a new one if cronin gets let go we will go threw the same crap as we did when cronin first got the job. All is not lost. OHHHHHHH OHHHHHH OHHHHHH LETS GO UC!!!!!!!!

Haven't done the research, but I bet you can go to every board and find negative posting no matter which team you follow, but I am glad you guys are watching this board a little closer. You have to admit though that much of the positive posting recently was based on the potential signings of these recruits. Now that we have struck out on many of these it is tougher to consistently stay upbeat.

Final Word On Teague

For those that don't believe Cincinnati was right there till the end here is a direct quote from Marquis. November is a long way away. I wish him well and much success. Good job by Mick and staff in this recruiting process. I truly believe once this program returns to the NCAA Mick will land these close calls.

On his final decision: "It's has been really close. I also had Cincinnati in there. People don't know I liked them a lot. Coach (Mick) Cronin and I are really close."

There is no reason to stop recruiting him if they are as close as he makes it sound. Maybe things will change.

At the risk of coming across as too negative (and I have been negative out of frustration in the past), I would simply suggest that Coach Cronin needs to establish his identity for the program. He was an assistant under two strong-willed coaches that had solid, well-defined identities for their respective programs, which attracted the types of players that fit the program's profile.

I can imagine it's hard for a recruit to really get a bead on UC based on what we've seen on the court. For whatever reason, Mick hasn't been able to put his stamp on the program...and I would argue that a great coach can do that without having the best players. Are they a tough, physical, grind-it-out team? Are they a team that accentuates great guard play in a drive and kick system? 5 man open post? Full court man to man pressure?

Honestly I think Mick has felt some pressure to get UC back to great heights quickly, along with the crucible of the Big East, and has over-thought things to some degree. Maybe the pressure of rebuilding his dream job from the ground up has worn on him...and the first few losing seasons have lessened his confidence. He's second guessing himself at times, and it manifests itself in his players and on the court. That's not to say he can't get it done - I believe he can. But he has to be himself, pick a system he feels comfortable with and go for it. Once he does that, and the team implements that style on the court, greater success will come and recruits will be attracted to it.

I'm hoping he can get it done, and believe he can.

I also agree. He coached under two GREAT coaches and was thought to be rising star when UC got him from Murray State. Nothing has changed, except the lack of patience by a faction of the fan base. Given time AND support, I have no question that he will succeed. And he will stay forever.

This is strictly my opinion. I think because of the lack of players in his first 3 seasons that Mick has been a little lenient in terms of locker room discipline. I mean this in terms of players not hustling and following a game plan. The fact that there has been no team leadership from players has exacerbated this.

Having said that, I think the notice he put the players on following the NIT loss to Dayton, is a turning point for him and the program. In my opinion you will see a much more focused team this coming season and a more disciplined one. It is one of the reasons why I'm optimistic about the '10-'11 season.

Repped.

I was talking to a close friend of Caliparis his name is TIM and I asked him Is it true that Cal pays for players and is cheating the system he told me NO, I asked him how sure he was and he told me hed bet his career on it I told his long time best friend that i didnt believe him and he said if my name isnt TIM DONAUGHEY then im lying!!!! So the moral of the story is Cal is not cheating Have a great day LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So ESPN's Ric Bucher tweeted this last night:

Two NBA teams fighting over Calipari. This belongs in SI's "Sign of the Apocalypse" section. When did he become more than a great recruiter?

My initial thought was that there is no way two NBA teams would be fighting over Calipari if he wasn't seriously interested. Then he followed up with this:

To clarify Calipari remark: I'm going off ESPN colleagues postulating that Cle needs to hire Cal before Chi does in order to get LeBron.

This made it seem like the first comment was more speculation than actual reporting, but it was also reported that Cal was sitting courtside with LeBron's agent last night and WWW recently filed his papers with the NBA to be a coaches agent.

Who knows, but I'm not sure the book is completely closed on Teague.

With the NCAA looking into the Eric Bledsoe situation I think Teague has a chance to be back on the market sooner rather than later.

I wouldn't count on that. From what I've been hearing he is solid on Kentucky however IF he does decide to re-open his recruitment, Cincinnati would be his choice. With the comments he made about Coach Cronin and how close he was to committing here you would have to think we would be the favorites.
