UK's Big man priority for 2011 right now?...

"At this point, according to a person close to the team that Matt spoke with, Kentucky feels that those players in order of likelihood are Braeden Anderson, God’s Gift Achiuwa and Stan Simpson. Depending on how their visit goes next week, Simpson could move to the top of the list.”

God’s Gift Achiuwa, ECC’s Division I recruit, finished with 24 points to surpass 1,000 in his career as Tyshawn Edwards (Grover Cleveland) added 16 points and 11 boards. For NCCC, five players scored in double-figures led by Robby Seyler’s 15.

Erie Community College power forward God’s Gift Achiuwa has received a lot of attention because of his name. The native of Nigeria is now receiving even more attention from some high majors for his ability on the court. Achiuwa is 6’8 235lb forward, who is averaging 23 points and 12 rebounds per game this season. He has been named NJCAA D2 Region 3 Player of the Year for the second season in a row.

Achiuwa has recieved offers from St. John’s, Niagara, and Cincinnati and a long list of schools have shown interest lately. Accoridng to head coach Alex Nwora (also a native of Nigeria), God’s Gift has received interest from: Kentucky, Marquette, Seton Hall, Tennessee, Michigan and West Virginia. Coach Nwora will be heavily involved in narrowing his list. Achiuwa will not take any visits until Erie CC’s season comes to a close. He will sign in April during the late signing period. At this point it seems that St. John’s is at the top of his list. (Note From Jeff: I would concur at this point, but he is seriously interested in UC and Niagara as well. Coach Cronin and Savino have been working hard.)
Achiuwa has improved dramatically since arriving in Buffalo and will continue to improve this off-season and at the next level. He is very strong and aggressive around the basket and loves to mix it up on the glass. Going from a division two JUCO to the Big East or SEC will be an adjustment, but Achiuwa plays extremely hard, is very coachable and has a willingness to learn.

that part you bolded is exactly why i prefer Jurick. It doesn't sound like gods gift will be able to be an immediate defensive contributor because of the large step from JUCO Division 2. I have never heard of a player coming from JUCO division 2. Let alone a player making an impact.

I'm pretty sure Cincinnati St. is a D2 Juco which is where John Williamson came from.

He has high D1 athleticism and quickness. He has sound footwork. The strength training at UC will be a huge boost to him and the fact that he has great grades will enable him to come to campus for the summer. Plus he plays with a high motor. There would be a lot of energy on the floor if Jackson and GG were on the floor together.

of course ben wallace is good. if we were recruiting ben wallace i would sign him up now but gods gift is far from ben wallace. i am sure gg has great attributes and if we sign him you wont hear any complaints from me. i love any player that hustles and is full of energy but he wont be an instant impact like i think jurick can be.

And i love williamson but seriously how many minutes would he see on this team? like 10 probably. he had heart but he wasn't anything special.

Gods gift is 6-9 and about the same thickness as ben. both are hard players. i dont think GG is as good as Ben, just built from the same mold.

you think he can come in and get 6-8 boards? thats all i really want out of this last signee

Rebounding is all about effort. I have never seen him play but based on the info I have seen, he is a hustler. At his size, I think he could come in and be effective defensively and on the boards. Next year we will still have Gates and Jackson. Gates will be our go to guy in the post again offensively and I think Jackson will show some improved moves in the post as well. We have already seen improvement in this area from him this year. Don't forget we will have Gaines next year too. We should be solid in the post again as long as we get one more guy who can provide some minutes and rebound.

I wouldn't expect too much from Gaines next year.

I think Gaines will provide an upgrade over Biggie. 5-10 minutes a game depending on the situation. Gates is going to play a ton but depending on who they bring in with the last 2011 scholarship there's no reason to believe Kelvin won't get some good minutes next year.

I think you are really discounting what Biggie added this year. He absolutely changed a couple games that resulted in wins. He also has matured so much that he now makes extremely few mistakes.

Think about this - during conference play this year his FG shooting percentage was 72% and he committed a grand total of ONE turnover.

Admittedly, Biggie is a role player and Gaines has some athletic gifts (mainly quickness, hops) which may give him a higher upside and the potential to be a major minutes type player (eventually) but I would be very impressed if he was better, all around, than Biggie is right now and I guarantee he will make exponentially more mistakes.

I have high hopes for Gaines, but I think Biggie is going to be missed more than people realize.

Here is hoping we can land God's Gift!

The best rule of thumb I have ever heard regarding JUCO bigs is to take their JUCO averages (PPG, RPG etc) and cut them in half to predict what they will do in D1. Not a watertight forecast method, but if you look at the numbers for guys like Toyloy, it tends to be remarkably accurate.

I admire what Biggie has done for this program and too think he has progressed and found a good role with this team... but I still believe NEXT year Gaines will provide an upgrade. As they say, we'll see. Check back in ten months and we'll see where we're at.

The Paws will enter the tourney with a record of (26-2) and are led by Region 3 Player of the Year God's Gift Achiuwa who averages 23 points and 12 rebounds per game. Erie last made the tourney in 2008 when they finished 8th. Parkland is making their first trip to the NJCAA D-2 championships since 1994. With a win, PC would return to action on Thursday night at 8:30 or would play at 1:00 Thursday with a defeat. Follow the play-by-play right here with CobraSportsNet.
