Obviously we need this kid and hopefully that will happen this wknd. That being said I still think Gaines will give us a lot on the defensive side of the ball by changing shots. I really like the thought of Gaines, Gates, JJ and Achiwa(sp?) I think we win the rebound battle most nights which will give UC extra possessions. I think this addition will make us matchup well most nights in the BEAST..

hopefully gaines can be a presence. from what i have heard, i think everyone here needs to temper their expectations of him. he is a huge project player.

Agreed which is why the redshirt year was important for him... just looking at everyone that went after him you know the kid has serious potential- the question is can he realize it?

agree. my point was that i still do not expect very much from him this year. maybe by his sophomore or junior year i'll expect legit contributions.

My question is what does production mean? Are we talking offensively or defensively? I believe with Gates down low and Jackson who showed signs of an emerging low post game they will be okay scoring wise down on the block... if Gaines can give 5-10 minutes of solid defense a game it will be good production, in my book.

I worry about our interior fouling next year. Gates has become a great defender in my opinion that doesn't foul much, but JJ fouls quite a bit and I think Gaines will be a fouling machine early in his career. Really don't know much about GG's post defense, but I'm concerned we will allow a lot of free points at the free throw line.

On the other hand, Thomas fouled quite a bit and we lose that so we'll see how it goes.

i don't know why people here think we need 2 true bigs in at all times. Kyle Kuric played PF for UofL this year; Villanova has played 4 wing players for years now, Marquette Jae Crowder at center for long stretches of games.

if we have foul trouble, we can play play an extra wing and do just fine. We played a lot of zone at the end of the year- and i'd expect to see more of it next year- especially with a lot of freshmen on the team.

Agreed. The reason another servicable big is needed is for the likelihood that JJ, and to a lesser extent, Gates gets into foul trouble. The fact that 2 bigs are being brought in this weekend tells me that not much will be expected from Gaines this year, and that he is lilely a year or 2 from being a soild contributer.

I also agree but I really think Gaines doesn't need to score. Anything he can give us on put backs would be great. Another year in the weightroom should help a ton also. I just want a shot blocker back there. I can't remember atleast in recent past having a real threat. Maybe Hicks but he was only 6'4 ish. I legit athletic 6'10 kid will be that presence even if he doesn't score. I hope they redshirt Ellis so he can improve and get stronger too. I like that Mick seems to have a back up plan with GG.. If we sign the Gift I think Gaines will benefit the most without having to worry about fouls.. If not I agree about lowering expectations but mine are more about changing shots than scoring and I think with this year of practicing with the team and getting stronger he will be able to provide that much like KMart did early in his career. I would be presently surprised if he would average 4 points a game on putbacks and block some shots. Having GG would allow him to be the agressor in the paint and have some fun.. I miss yelling "Get that weak s**t out of here like I did when Kmart was here. Again, not hoping for Kenyon, just a shot blocker... Sorry so long winded...

Just because two bigs are coming in this weekend doesn't mean that Mick is looking to bring in two more bigs. My guess is God's Gift is option number one and the other is a back up option. I wouldn't read too much into it until we know the actual make up of the team next season.

You are right. But I do remember reading something this past week (here, on BCN, or Ncaabbs site) that Mick may be looking to bring in 2 bigs this spring. Of course, that would mean someone would be leaving the team, or one of the incoming recruits not qualifying.

There has been talk or awhile that Mick was looking to bring in two juco bigs.

this has been rumored on all the boards...still trying to figure out who goes to make room. personally, i hope its not Parker. he kinda was the odd man out this year but i think he still can be a really strong player for us going forward.

Who would you rather see go?

i'd rather just add 1 big and keep the roster as is.

if Parker leaves we literally will have no experience coming off the bench. it would be 5 returning players and 8 first year guys. where would we have been without our bench this year? you need some experience mixed with new bodies coming off the bench.

I try not to commment on stuff like this unless I have "heard" something. I just feel it's not fair to the player to hear and read this stuff. There could be nothing to it. People may reach what they think is a logical conclusion based on his decreased playing time. The rumor that Mick wants two juco post players has been out there for at least two months.

If true it tells you a few things. First that they're not comfortable with Gaines giving them big minutes next season. Secondly, the obvious numbers game in the low post. Lastly, it gives you stronger options for 2012.

I have "felt" for sometime now that they want to sign two players. Not necessarily two bigs but two players. Heard a whisper that they'd "like" to sign two juco big men back in early Feb.. There is the current number constraints. Right now there is only one scholarship available. Don't take these words and say, "Bearcat Jeff said they're signing two players!". That's my personal take and feelings which aren't based on any known fact :D

Mick said voluntarily at a press confercence after a game this year that he wishes he redshirted Parker to save a year of eligibility. Even though he didn't play much this year, I think Mick really likes Parker as a person and really likes what his game can be. I don't think he will be pushed out. If he were to leave, I think it would be his choice. Otherwise the opening would come from somwhere else. And that most likely to me would be someone failing to qualify.

Excellent point about the qualifying. It's why I made the "People may reach what they think is a logical conclusion based on his decreased playing time" statement. A guy doesn't have to leave for a scholly to be open.

Ellis in jeopardy?
