What is your definition of "damn good"? He made a final four and 3 sweet 16's but also missed the tournament and went to the NIT. He has only won the conference tourney once and never won the regular season. So, while it's better than Mick not really head and shoulders above Mick.

I am not gonna turn this into a Huggs vs. Cronin thing. But compare the records and success at both. 4 sweet sixteens, 1 elite eight and a final four in 10 years vs 1 sweet sixteen in ten years. That is heads and shoulders above us. But back to the subject. We need some truly impact players here. Could you imagine a 5 star small forward with this squad? Dreams of sugar plums in my head

I don’t see our recruiting changing much until we make a run or two in the tourney. Like it or not, the tournament means a lot. We see what it did for huggins. A final 4, and 2 elite 8s and we started getting some of the best talent in the country.
apples and oranges. While I enjoyed Hug's teams he wasn't facing the same circumstances in the recruiting game that Mick does. Not even close. Maybe a few deep runs could create more exposure and help some but not being in a P-5 conference is a game changed.

Are we talking about Huggins' UC teams or his current WVU teams? His WVU teams have been doing damn good since he's been there. Better than us during the same period.
Has he won a title? He also has the luxury of recruiting to a P-5 conference. His personal habits almost destroyed this program

Again not diving into this topic but it ain't like huggins' recruiting took an uptick. The recruiting class that went to the sweet sixteen last year was ranked 77th. Besides you gotta get to the sweet 16 in order to make it to the title game. Unfortunately we haven't even done that in a while. I hope we can do that this year!

Huggins teams generally under achieve in the tourney.

I’d almost be willing to bet he is top 5 in active coache on being upset by a lower seed in the tourney.

When he was at UC we were a protected seed almost every year in his last 10 years and every year we were upset in the first or second round.

He has a couple final fours, but he isn’t a champion and losses far far far far more than he wins in the tourney and gets upset a lot

As with any high seed if you lose its going to be a lower seed. And we were talking about Huggs when he was UC coach we were talking the past 10 years.

How many one and dones has he had a West Virginia?

I’m guessing not a lot.

So he wins without one and dones just like his final four at UC was with Juco guys.

So if anything hugs is evidence you don’t those type of guys to win.

He had one. Who stayed an extra year and guess what?? They went to the Final Four! That's my point. That one Five star put them over the top from a sweet sixteen team to a final four team! That's what we freaking need. Lol

I had to look that one up. I had forgotten about Ebanks. I think he was originally recruited to IU but backed out. But only having the one helps prove that Huggins and Mick have a very similar recruiting philosiphy because you don't and won't see Huggs reeling in the 5 stars and one and dones.

Either way I agree with your general point in this post. Teams need the high four stars and five stars to advance in the tourney.

Of course it’s different. It was 25 years ago. The whole landscape has changed. I think the same principle still applies. Only way we are getting these players is success in March.

The only way??? Getting into a better conference would do the trick.

Conference affiliation matters for budget. But I don't think it matters to the high school kids nearly as much as people think. I remember Nysier Brooks was on the radio show a while back and he said when he was a recruit he didn't even know what the conferences were. If we keep winning, we'll keep getting good players.

Jake I will refer you to Mr. Chad Brendel. He has make it clear on many occasions that conference affiliation is huge. If you chose not to value his opinion that is certainly your choice. As someone who has first hand knowledge of many things associated with recruiting I put a lot of weight on his information.

It's also not just conference it's sports apparel affiliation.

I'm not saying we can't get good players but it is a big impediment to landing players. Our success only goes to show how good our staff is at finding and developing players.
