Around the AAC

AAC is 2 for 2 on crazy games today.

Temple was down 17 at the half to SMU at home and wins by 7 in OT. They were up 3 with 15 secs left in regulation but fouled an SMU 3-point shooter who would go on to make all 3 FTs to force OT.

USF then pulls off one of the biggest AAC upsets of the year beating Memphis 75-73 AT Memphis.

Memphis has been awful on the road. Hope that continues for another week.
Guess this one was at Memphis. Penny not looking great.

ECU pulled out a second consecutive close home win over a terrible team. I wish we could get rid of them. At least they are winning those games though. Last year they lost five Q4 games OOC.

With so few OOC games scheduled this year, each one is much more important for the conference numbers. It will be interesting to see what the selection criteria will be. Right now the SoCon is #5 in conference RPI, ahead of the SEC and Big East. Conference play is already getting started. I'm thinking they might need to go to a predetermined number of teams from each conference based on the past few seasons, like they do for the Champions League in European soccer.

Caleb Mills is in the Transfer Portal. Houstons best player is leaving Houston for good. Pretty crazy honestly. Have to wonder why? (altough they wont really take that big of a dip without him, thats how good they are)

UConn just had their 6’11 freshman enter the portal. There are going to be plenty of talented players out there, have to get a couple of them.

We should’ve punted last year for couple former top 100 players that would’ve had to sit out. I guess he wanted full roster year one. We could’ve been sitting good if we snatched up a C and PG last year in portal. Season was lost anyway

Tulane is bringing in Jalen Cook from LSU, freshman point guard ranked #165 in last year's class. They also got junior guard DeVon Baker from UNC Asheville.

Hopefully the AAC takes a step up this year. Memphis should be better, especially OOC. We should be better too. USF lost a lot, ECU losing Gardner will hurt.

Michael Durr from USF is back in the portal after previously committing to Virginia Tech. Trey Wade from Wichita St is also back in the portal after previously committing to Nevada.

USF lost almost everybody, but is putting together an intriguing roster:

Javon Greene, senior PG from George Mason, 38% from three, 3.9 steal rate
Jake Boggs, sophomore SG from UNCW, 42% from three, 115 ORtg
Corey Walker, freshman SF from Tennessee, 4 star recruit
Jalyn McCreary, sophomore PF from South Carolina, 8.8 block rate
Bayron Matos, freshman C from New Mexico, 10.7 OReb rate

This makes me miss the college basketball I grew up with. I know we're in a similar boat, but at least people will remember Davenport, MAW, Saunders, DDJ, Madsen.

Yeah, and rivalries were a lot more fun when you were going up against familiar players every year. There aren't as many heroes and villains that everyone knows anymore.

That's a good looking young core for USF though, much like we have. Hopefully they stick around.

I think the new one free transfer rule will help add some balance back into roster stability. With covid and the free transfer rule this year it has been the wild west and unfortunately I think a lot of kids who are in the portal are going to end up without a place to play next year.
