Bearcats to US Bank

Does anyone know the dimensions of 5/3 Arena? Sometimes I doubt you could even make a decent seating arrangement inside of that building. In the current seating arrangement, there are way too many "nosebleed" seats for a 13,000-seat arena, and if you rotate the court 90 degrees, you're giving up too many sideline seats to make it worthwhile.

Waite, I agree with you. That venue is light years better now than it was in the 80s and the surrounding area is awesome. There are many more positives for such a move now than ever before. My only concern is the impact on the students. The students don't attend now and all they have to do is walk next door to the arena. Are they going to come downtown for the games? Probably not. I share my season tickets with another couple and they have already told me if the games move downtown, they're done. I like going to campus, but I'm open to the move downtown as well.....many positives either way.

I remember having big student sections this year in our pre-season games.

Moving it downtown would give a big FU to the local bars/restaurants in Clifton.

The University needs to make a decision based on what is best for the program and not the bars around campus. If it makes sense for UC to go downtown financially, I hope they do it. If that gives them the ability to renovate or build a new arena on campus, even better.

Exactly. I trust our administration (feels good to say that) will make the correct decision for the program as well as financially. The students have been great the last few years; LT, you are mis-remembering. If there are busses to transport them downtown, and the team keeps winning, they will continue to be a homecourt presence.

If you think people don't go to the games now just wait and see what happens if we move downtown. UC basketball belongs on campus and needs to stay there.

Like I said in my earlier post this is a dumb discussion anyways. UC is not going to spend money to renovate someone else's arena when we could renovate 5/3rd.

This post rubs me the wrong way. It sounds like you think you're in the loop and know exactly what the administration is thinking. This discussion is not dumb by any stretch. I believe I remember reading that Whit was talking to the owners of US Bank Arena about possibly making it happen a little while ago, so clearly it's possible. It may happen, it may not. But to say you know they won't....you don't.

I think considering only the bottom line of the basketball program and not considering other factors and steakholders is narrow minded.

I disagree. I think the ultimate goal of every athletic department is to make money. They need to have short term and long term goals and plans. Short term they need to make money.

Correct, money and progression of the basketball program are the factors here. Clifton restaurants and such worried about UC basketball leaving campus for a few years? Band together and make a donation contingent on basketball staying in Clifton.

couldn't agree more Jeff. I really don't care if it is on campus or not. It just needs to be a better venue then what we have now. 5th/3rd is embarrassing.

Amen. Between the crappy seats, views, 1990's TV's in the concourse, and the middle school level concessions (besides the beer) the shoe can't get any worse.

I honestly wonder sometimes how any recruits would want to play in that stadium. I understand there are a million different factors, but if i walked into that gym on a visit i would certainly be swayed...

I actually don't think it is bad for the players. Think about it:

- top notch court
- good lighting on floor
- good depth perception/easy to shoot
- gets very loud
- All-American wall and banners pretty cool

5/3 sucks for the fans in the upper deck. Not the players so much. Point is I don't think 5/3 takes away from a recruits visit but I also don't think it adds anything.

It's not bad for the players at all. The only negative may be their locker room.

If that was true they wouldn't have tennis, volleyball, soccer, baseball, etc.

And I bet if Whit wants to move it off campus Ono is going to have say in it. Ono may be for moving it off campus but he'll have his say which means it spans just that of an athletic department. Too big of a decision unless it's just a very short term plan.

The other sports are there to make the University more appealing (to students and other conferences). That is why the University is fully funding all of them now. They want to be appealing to the ACC and Big 12.

That's called title 9, don't even get me started on how stupid it is to have a women's rowing team that costs 2,000/boat and full rides for all rowers vs. boys tennis, which is much cheaper. If you could watch boys wrestling, tennis, etc. vs. women's rowing, the decision is easy. Title 9 creates no equality, as everyone still views the women's sports as inferior. It's all about the $$$. If it wasn't, we would be in a power conference right now, if you based it purely on results. Rutgers has done $hit in recent years, but since they are a big market, the conferences dash for the $$$. It's so easy, even Ralph can understand.....
