What it does say about Mick is that he is a great evaluator of talent. He may have missed on Burke b/c of PT. He did get Cash, the #12 rated pg in the class.

I am hoping the signing of Lawrence gets Mick some momentum in the recruiting game, definitely doesn't hurt our NY pipeline.

Not saying Mick isn't a good evaluator of talent but that doesn't really prove that. For every Burke there is someone who Mick really went after that didn't pan out. But that obviously happens everywhere.

You just made me sad. I honestly read this and felt discouraged because of one reason..WE COULD HAVE BEEN AN ELITE PROGRAM.

Back to Burke..I do not remember hearing we were in on him. I don't want to bash Mick but I get the feeling he can't exactly close. Would have been great to see Cash and Burke though WOW! Still feel fortunate to have had Cash at UC.

It happens, Mick has built a program clean, and i think i admire that most of all. You see the season Huggs had this year?

I agree. I think that the one thing that cannot be argued is his eye for talent. Mick fought to add Steve Logan in the late signing period in 1998, and had to convince Huggins to do so. We all know how special he turned out to be. Additionally, if you look at the players we have been just missed out on, a number of them are impact players on their team or in they leagues. Just off of the top of my head, Deonte Burton at Nevada was down to UC and Nevada and picked Nevada due to location. He was an unknown recruit in the late signing period 3 years ago who has been WAC player of the year. Trey Burke was relatively unknown, and his signing 2 years ago likely would not have made a hugh splash on UC sites, but is now in the running for national POY. AJ Hammoms has been an impact freshman for Purdue, and would have been huge for the Cats this year. He was down to Purdue and UC. He will be one of the top players in the B1G before he leaves Purdue. We all know how good Obepka was at SJU this year and would have been hugh for us, given our front line issues. He was on Kemba Walker before he blew up his senior year, and Mitch McGary before he became a top 5 player. That's just a small sample that comes to mind.

How was Trey Burke so overlooked as a 4 star recruit?

Evaluating recruits is an in-exact science. Cronin has said that he doesn't look at how recruits are rated on these sites, but how they perform when evaluated in person. These services are designed to increase interest in a fan-base and to sell subscriptions. It's not a coincidence that when a prominent school with a rabid fan-base gets involved with a recruit, his stock goes up. It helps sell the service to fans following that school.

The thing that is most surprising to me is that Mick wanted the 3 pt specialist, Logan, Field, and wanted Francisco Garcia at Louisville and we don't have anything close to a specialist now and the closest thing we have had has been Vaughn in his 7 years here.

Yea I did. Not real impressive but if you asked me if I'd take Mick or Huggins now it would probably be an answer most wouldn't support. I do agree the clean program is something to be proud of. I personally don't mind taking chances on kids that some consider thugs if they can really play though ;) I just want the talent level back up but I realize cleaning the program up is important.

Yes and if we would not have fired Ed Badger we would have gotten Danny Manning and we could have been an elite program.

Badger would have gotten Dennis Hobson who went on to star at Ohio State. Danny Manning was far from a sure thing to UC.

If the guy at Steinberg's Clothing had not bought that suit for LaSalle Thompson he would have been a Bearcat.

Mick was given a directive to restore the image of the University of Cincinnati. He was told to graduate players and do things right. He has operated under the guidelines given to him. It is this, along with winning that causes me to support him. No, I don't think he is the second coming, but I do think the man has done an admirable job rebilding UC baketball under some very difficult circumstances.

This is simple. The recruit has to pick you too! A coach doesn't walk into a store and say, "I'll take one of those". You can count on one hand the coaches who can land most any player they want, and even they miss some players. Recruiting is a two way street, like dating. Sometimes the girl thinks you're a good boyfriend, she just doesn't like your house enough to marry you.

I will agree that Cronin did come in and build a clean program. I also commend his handling of the brawl as well. Showed some character. I do question his ability as a coach however. But you are right. He has built a program under different guidelines from in the past. So he does deserve credit for that.

Wow, kudos to you!

Have to agree. The rebuilding took a longggggg time but time well spent.

Good post. So why then accuse him of being a thief in a previous thread? Or state that you root for him to fail more than you root for the team to win? Lots of posters on here question his ability to coach, but no one else has made the previous two statements.

Finally you admit Cronin is the best man for the job and will be one of the greats when it is all said and done

Marquis Teague came down to UC and Kentucky, he told Mick he was coming to UC, until Calipari stepped in as signing day approached.

Mick is by far the best man for the UC job, if UC had not hired Mick in 2006 UC would be the same place that DePaul is today, last place.

I never stated that I thought he was a thief. I stated that it was the impression of many when he left to Louisville. And I have never said that I root for him to fail at the expense of the team. Show me those post "bearcat1".

I never said that, Ralph. And freaking stay on 1 id. Your act is getting old real fast.Jeff, why do you allow this guy to post on multiple ids. It makes this forum look clownish at times. All of the other posters are solid and informational. Why allow this?
