I get wanting to shoot a lot of free throws. That's very good. Very, very good. I don't get why it has to be compared to 3 point attempts though. I mean, I get it in just the simple terms of not wanting to just pass the ball around forever and Jack up a bad 3. But that's not the only kind of 3. We're a good passing team and high assist team. We're shooting a good % from 3 this year for a reason. And it's bc they're coming from passes and are rhythm shots. That's a very important part of the game.

Free throws good does not mean 3s bad. We have 3 guys who should be taking bare minimum of 3 3s each per game imo. And Evans and Cumberland should probably be at 5 each.

ball never once came out once it went inside last night. wash will never pass it and gary was unstoppable so can't blame him for putting the shots up. pg's weren't doing enough to get open 3s for the wings. i dont recall us just passing up wide open 3s all game.

we had guys open when they double and tripled washington but you know its never coming out when he gets it. it just felt like everything we did on offense was bad. the movement, spacing, effort. just a bad game, hopefully it was just a mental thing.

Washington going against a triple team when Cumberland was wide open made me mad. Cronin even called him out post game. And agree on Clark. He was a couple tough rolls off the rim from having 30.

Washington really needs to learn how to kick the ball out or he's going to go no where. Teams at the next level don't want a guy that's going to try taking on double teams every time he touches the ball. We have the 3 point shooters now to make it very dangerous for teams to crash down on him. Plus if he does that a few times they stop coming down which opens up space for him! I don't really get what he doesn't see about that.

3s are low percentage shots and when you are shooting a lot of 3s, the defense isn't having to work. They aren't picking any fouls and you will miss most of the 3s you take. Recipe for a loss. Comparing them to free throws is kind of similar to the deflections thing. It means you being aggressive.

Gary and Kyle play a whole different game. Gary takes his time and backs his man down and waits to see if he will get doubled or not. Then has the option to kick out. It's a slow deliberate process.

Kyle on the other hand is like a bull in a China shop. He doesn't have time to look over the options. He puts his head down and hopes he doesn't get too much resistance. I don't think he would be quite as effective playing like Gary and vice versa. Unfortunately that means not a lot of assists and some head scratcher shots.

Justin Berg said that UC is nearly undefeated when we shoot more free throws than 3 point attempts. That’s why it’s being compared. It’s also a valuable stat that kenpom tracks as well.

If you have 20 possessions and on 10 you shoot a 3 and on the other 10 you get fouled and go to the line then it’s more valuable to get fouled. 40% of 10 3 points equates to 12 points. 20 free throw attempts at a 70% clip gets you 14 points plus gets the other team in foul trouble.

Game plan was to get their physical bigs off the floor and into foul trouble. We still shot 10 3’s and we made 40% of them. I did not see us passing up on 3 point shots. This buffalo team recovered well on our shooters and jarron and Jacob didn’t have a ton of open looks. So instead forcing them like we would have last year, we drove the ball or got a post touch to draw the foul.

I thought buffalo smartly guarded our bigs. And it almost felt like they had 6 guys on the floor because when Gary would post, the double team would come from behind him and not from the defender guarding jarron or Jacob.

If getting fouled and winning shooting free throws was micks game plan then he gets an A plus because it’s exacty how we won it.

Also buffalo did a great job of getting back on defense. Took away transition opportunities.

Keep in mind, I don’t think we’d fair very well playing the pace we played in the first 3 games for 3 days in a row. You’ve got to conserve your legs for game 2 and 3. The game was never in doubt. UC turned it on when they needed to. When buffalo shrunk the lead to 4 or 5, UC would get energized and push the lead out again. I’m just happy we won and had a close game. We needed it.

I actually think the games get easier from here on out

I get why it's good to shoot free throws. I get how points per possession works. I just don't get why we're acting like 3 point shots being held so low is a great recipe for us. Just bc we shoot a lot of free throws, that doesn't mean the 3s have to go. We shot several long 2s and had 18 TO that have nothing to do with free throws vs 3s. If we are driving and being aggressive, feeding the post and drawing doubles, then that should be opening up the type of 3s that we want to shoot.

Trust me, I get the theory, I just don't get why the 3 has to be the bad guy. Getting looks for shooters should always be a big part of our plan. It helps open the floor. No one but Clark had real success last night bc it was a rugged game that we're not as suited for as in the past. If we played a 4 vs 13 NCAA game like that last night, we easily could've lost. 3s don't have to come at the expense of free throws. Especially if they are assisted and coming from rhythm instead of what we used to do.

How are the players going to survive the season if we are inviting games like last night? It's so hard to maintain that. The players will be battered all season long. I'm glad we won last night. I'm just hoping we aren't in games like that very often. But if games like that do happen, it is good to know that we are at least capable of getting to the line a lot.

iowa is just trash aren't they. i didn't realize they were tied with grambling state with 10 minutes to go last week. grambling state is 340+ on kenpom.

down at the half to south dakota state.

Iowa now joins the 187 KenPom UC Irvine, D2 University of Mary Marauders, and #344 (of 351)KenPom Alabama State as the only teams to lose to South Dakota State. Wyoming may end up a better win this year than Iowa.

Did someone say they watched this on Roku or Apple TV? I can not find where it will be. Thanks.
