I really like this Nebraska team. They are much better than there record and every year at work we do a conference tourney challenge and everyone thought i was crazy to pick Neb to beat Wisconsin but I watched them beat Mich st at mich st and then almost beat miami and play us really tough.

super young team and they played amazing defense tonight as well as shields just being so good

Gross.

Shields has had a great career but Nebraska should be better next year. Probably NITish

I thought I read that Neb had the most first year players ( or least new to the team) on its team than any one in the country with 11.

I just kinda developed a liking for them. Mostly just this year after watching them a few times. they play extremely hard. I also wanted us beating them to mean something so I kinda been rooting for them all year. They lost a lot of tough games though

Yes recruiting has been the problem. And facilities and conference are big recruiting obstacles.
Yes, recruiting is a big issue, and the obstacles above are real. I am not saying get rid of Mick. He is not going anywhere.

Are you guys really saying there is NOTHING we can do? Our O can't improve without getting better players? We HAVE to grind it out against equal or inferior teams instead of opening up the O and playing confident? We can't have better assistant coaches or a different teaching and recruiting philosophy? Is it required to play worse D with a free flowing O? I do think open offense gives us a better chance to win and recruit better players. Doogle explained it well in another thread about habits are hard to change and Mick used a certain philosophy when we joined the Big East, and it is hard for him to "risk" changing.

I can definitely see a recruiting philosophy change (towards O). Yes keep the D too. I was expecting more of a change in style of play with coach watching for a year and telling us over and over about a new style. I know he felt he had to revert back, but I think it is harder to beat good teams playing this way.

Are we saying we are maxing our potential, and this is it until the arena is renovated and / or we get in a P5?

Has anyone noticed how much play Fox19 follows Xavier? Is X paying them to follow them so much? TV, Internet, Twitter, they literally have been stalking them. I get it, they are #5 but really, hmsince when did local media show college sports that much love? It's gross.

What offensive philosophy would you like them to have? They could have the exact same offense as Xavier and it wouldnt make a difference. Why? Because if you cant make entry passes, catch entry passes, penetrate the zone, make layups, make free throws, or make wide open 3's with any sort of consistently you are going to struggle offensively. The offense is not an X and O issue, it is a Jimmy and Joe issue. Xavier has 3 guys that will get NBA looks: Sumner, Blueitt, and Reynolds with an incredible supporting cast at all positions. UC has Troy Caupain who is playing out of position at point guard and Gary Clark who we've had to overwork for two straight years simply because our supporting cast is garbage as a collective unit. If you don't have offensive talent you aren't going to have a good offense. At least with defense you can help each other and erase mistakes. Nobody can put the ball in the basket for you. As for the recruiting philosophy I think it has changed. There is a much greater emphasis on the offensive side of the ball. Clark, Evans, Washington, Cumberland, Jenifer, Cobb, and Moore were all recruited as offensive players first with the understanding their defense might be behind the 8 ball. Mick understands his teams need to score more. He just needs more players who can score. The transition is happening and there will be some speed bumps. I havent looked at the numbers but this squad has had to have been one of Mick's best offensive teams. They are capable of getting 70 every night which many teams in the past have not been capable of. It's the only reason why I have some optimism for March. They have figured out how to defend at an elite level if they score to their potential big things could happen.

When a local team has an extraordinarily magic season you see this kind of coverage. When UC went to the final 4 and elite 8 back in the early 90s this happened. One channel even gave Terry Nelson a camera so he could show the Bearcats sleeping, watching TV, etc. It pains me as a UC fan to admit it but as Xavier advances, and I think they will, it will get even worse. They have a team that could win it all and imagine how bad it would be then.

Jack this team is not capable of scoring 70 every night. We have hit 70 1 time in the last 8 games, and 1 time away from home all season...and that was vs Bowling Green.

They are absolutely capable of that if they as a collective unit play to their potential which was my point. Gary hasnt made a basket in 2 games. Cobb has been a ghost the second half of the season. Ellis seemingly has regressed. Caupain has struggled with his shooting %. However these guys at their best have enough offensive talent to score enough to beat anyone with the way they play defense. All four of the guys I just mentioned have been the reason we have won big games over the last two years because of their offense. Should have beat Butler, Iowa St., SMU, Temple, none of which was offense the problem. They are good enough offensively to make a run is my overall point. I havent felt that way about any other team except the sweet 16 team in the Cronin era.

I wish I was as optimistic as you! I feel like we're done scoring 70 for the year and we'll get knocked out scoring under 60. Hope I'm wrong.

There is a reason Cobb had no interest from teams other than University of San Francisco, he is inconsistent. There is a reason that Ellis came back here, he has mental lapses. There is a reason Clark did not go to ACC, lacks toughness. They all have holes in their games, that is why they are at UC and not a top tier program. They are incapable of playing to their collective potential on a consistent basis because that is the type of players that they are.

Guess we are about to find out with everything on the line the next two weeks. Definitely validity to what you are saying. I would say to defend Clark that he absolutely could be in ACC. Pitt was waiting for him at the airport when he got back from his Cincinnati visit. We had already locked it up.

Clark lacks toughness? but is DPOY and rebounds like a beast...never complains
