Cincinnati considering moving games downtown

lol! Essentially my son did. Daughter is on my dime. They were a year apart so I rationalized he could keep a eye on her. They have now both been brain washed.
working in the finance industry, there is a term you may have heard: Disinherit...

You have to think our biggest knock in recruiting is 5/3. However, the place is a cool atmosphere when its poppin'. Regardless, Im all for a move, but if i was a student, i would much rather be on Campus for a game, especially one on a wednesday night.

personally, i am not a fan of US Bank as a basketball venue...granted, i was not able to attend Crosstown to experience what sounds like an awesome atmosphere, but from my experiences in the past, like UC vs Miami, CUSA tournament games, etc., it always seemed like US Bank was almost too large, preventing/tempering crowd noise/energy...personally, i would prefer to continue to play at the Shoe' simply for the buzz as well as student attendance (which i think will be affected by a move downtown)...i have never been to Villanova or Duke, but their arenas do not seem that much larger than the Shoe', especially Villanova...ulimate wish is for a new arena, on campus...and i wonder what a move to US Bank would do to season ticket prices?
would also like to stay on campus. Love dinner at Martino's and short walk to arena. That said, I do hate the shoe. Really needs a facelift.

LOL!!! I won't say it but I've got two Buckeyes in my family and I can tell you first hand they can be obnoxious. I still love them though.

One word for you "Disown"

If you ask my 5 year old the only place she can't go for college she'll answer "Ohio State". I'm a proud papa.

glad to hear you are loyal...but you have to refrain from typing "tOSU"...OSU is manageable, but not TOSU...

L-T: i would like to think i would have the same mentality...

Go Bearcats!

Actually, the only acceptable way is O$U.

My oldest went to OSU and still roots for UC basketball over OSU. That's bringing one up right ;)

lmao. Actually my youngest son wrestled for Ohio State. The Cats disbanded their wrestling team years ago or he may have considered them.

I had 6 tickets for many years...BB & FB.....2 parents/4 kids....one big happy family. Paid a lot of money for the right to take a bunch of small kids to games, but the result was impassioned, loyal to a fault, hardcore Bearcat fans who didn't even consider the thought of going anywhere else to college. For many people, paying these prices is so much that they wouldn't even consider wasting it on taking their kids down there. I was stupid and took my kids, but they grew up the right way....love the Bearcats, hate OSU, hate X, hate Kentucky. One of them was even the Bearcat....lol! I had a whole year of him bringing home the Bearcat costume, tons of pictures, got a lot of mileage out of that year and that big Bearcat head. Our house is a bunch of diehard Bearcat fans! It's even affected the daughter-in-laws as well. One switched from a Hoosier fan to a Bearcat fan. Doing my part in increasing attendance!

If UC moves the games downtown, I guess we can finally determine if people don't go to the games because of the arena. For the Crosstown Shootout, UC fans far outnumbered XU fans. Could UC get 18,000 a game downtown? I think UC could do that for the bigger games and come close on the smaller games IF the arena is renovated. Will be interesting.

I love the ideal but a long term "home" needs to be established. UC has played well in US BANK Arena in recent years and I remember them winning a CUSA tournament there I believe. I do know alot of people who won't go to 5th/3rd because of parking and comfort. Forward thinking, I like it.

If UC does this and then is able to get into a better conference, they could eventually try to do something on campus. This option would also give them the possibility of tearing down 5/3 and building from scratch which I believe may actually be cheaper.

L-T sounds like you and your family created some great memories.

Cincinnat is a top 5 TV market for college basketball, there is no reason why we shouldn't be an NCAA tournament host site. I recall that Cincinnati put a bid in, but the inadequate US Bank Arena didn't meet the requirements. Not only will this help the university, but it will definitely help the city get more concerts and other events that bring money to the city.

Like you, I have many friends, co-workers, etc. who emphatically claim that 5/3 is the sole reason they no longer go to games. Many on here have pointed out that attendance had started to decline under Huggs before he left. I honestly believe that had more to do with the arena. The people I've talked to were ones who used to go and sit in the upeer arena seats. They've told me that it was a horrible experience and a terrible way to watch a game. As HDTVs became more prevalent, I think many people decided to sit at home and watch rather than go down there and sit in a terrible seat location that was uncomftable as well. I can't tell you how many times I've heard this from fans. It's been a lot!

That would be the biggest difference at US Bank...much better fan experience in the upper arena seats.

I am not for a move to US Bank. First, student attendance will suffer, which means crowd noise/intensity, which the players really feed off of, will suffer. Students won't go downtown on a consistant basis. Students can come and go as they please. If they have to rely on a shuttle then they can't arrive right at game time or after nor can they leave early. Going to a game might require a 3 to 3 and a half hour window for students to attend. Not going to happen for the casual student that just go to games because its the cool thing to do. As far as commuting for everyone else honestly US Bank is about the same distance as going to campus, unless you come from KY, then it's closer. Not sure what kind of renovations they would make, but it would need to be a complete overhaul, which would take much more than $100 million. And where do the owners of this arena have this kind of money to pony up? My guess is this is a ploy to get donors to pony up cash for 5/3rd renovations and/or a ploy to convince the ACC or whoever we will have a better arena in the near future. Taking games off campus would also mean less revenue to the school, which is the whole point anyway. It's not like we would get 100% of the proceeds of ticket sales/concessions. And do we really think more people would go to games because they're downtown? Didn't we try this for football already? And PBS IS a state-of-the-art facility compared to Nippert (as far as fan conveniences). US Bank is an older venue with just as few amenities as 5/3rd. The boxes are in the ceiling and if I'm not mistaken are sold to corporations for all events the venue holds, thus might not even be available to UC fans to purchase. Maybe they'd work something out, but I just can't see UC bringing in more money by moving games downtown. I'm all for exploring all options, but the simple truth is we need an arena like the Cintas Center ON CAMPUS. (I realize this is not an immediate option.) Or build a Yum Center type arena on campus and lease it out for the city to use or go halfsies with the owners of the US Bank Arena since they seem to have money lying around and let them use it for the Cyclones and concerts and tractor pulls and whatever else they host down there. NKU managed to do it.

Let's talk reality here. Fan interest is what it is. With continued success, UC can expect to draw maybe 10,000 people to the Shoe as is right now. What will a move to US Bank draw? As we stand right now our conference just got worse, so fan interest and attendance for teams like UCF and SMU and Tulane will not be very high. IF we move into the ACC, then great Duke and UNC will draw more fans. They would sell out the Shoe, would they sell out US Bank? The shootout didn't. It has sold out the Shoe every year though. So again, where's the upside to moving games downtown and sharing revenue? The US Bank is not a nice arena by any stretch of the imagination. Renovations won't change that. A complete overhaul could make it nicer, but it would have to be completely gutted and redone, adding more concession areas and restrooms, nicer boxes, wider concourses (you know the only reason fans go to games anymore) which would mean less seats in an arena that isn't changing the size of it's outside walls, so how would it outdraw the Shoe?

L-T you described me to a tee. If I have to sit in top section I'd rather sit at home and watch.
