Cobb vs Johnson

When we run Shaq and team does better than when Tc walks ball up court every time and he's only guy that scored 10-12 pts

Do you have any numbers to prove what you say is true other than your infamous eyes? or is it the same proof that TC played the 2 in high school?

I did a little stat check for last years games. Shaq scored 10 points or more 10 times last year. Of those 10, 7 of them were blowouts(more than 10 point victories). 6 of those 7 were against cupcakes(stony brook, Wagner, UCF, Houston X2, Tulane--they are still a cupcake even though they beat us on that last second shot) the only team not a cupcake on that list was NC State where TC had only 2 less points but more assists, rebounds and steals. Of all the other games I mentioned above there were only 2 games where Troy didnt score 10 points. 1 against wagner where he only played 19 minutes and the other being Houston where he didnt have a very good game. But every game Shaq did well in these blowouts you spoke of, troy did just as well.

Now im not saying troy is the best thing since sliced bread, but he is our leader and hes only a junior. The future is still very bright for this young 18 year old

Mick has already talked about focusing all offseason on scoring. And with the 30 second shot clock, I don't think any team can afford to walk it up. I personally am less concerned about our scoring than I think I ever have been under Mick. His growth as a coach is evident to me when you hear him talk.

Don't get me wrong though, I like the idea of Jenifer as a change of pace guy and a guy who creates for others. And I wouldn't mind going 3 guards at times either. But when we are in crunch time in big games, I think the Caupain/Cobb backcourt gives us our best chance.

Justin is going to be a good PG in time, but he still has a lot to work on to get there. Main thing is taking care of the ball and figuring out a lot of the passes he made in high school are going to go the other way at the next level. His vision is fantastic, but he has to adjust to passing lanes closing much faster...

Waterhead, I think everybody gets what you are saying. Having those different skill sets will be advantageous, the question is when will Jenifer's be able to be utilized. He is an undersized freshman PG. Different skill set or not, it will be tough for him to make an impact this year. Next year is a different story with a year under his belt and Cobb gone from the program.

Ok so I am going to stop with the whole Jenifer/Caupain thing (maybe:) since it is mainly just fun speculation.

However, it will be nice to have two different skill sets to throw at different situations. Something like having a back to the basket PF and a face up PF. Based on situations or defenders we can perhaps take advantage of unique situations.

As point guards go I'm not sure you can get any more different than TC and JJ's style/skill set...and I think it's great we have that diversity at the position now.

Make no mistake...THIS IS TROY'S TEAM...and he is my favorite player.

Still sounds better than anybody else on team passing. Every freshman has a lot to learn. Playing time is best way to learn.

Which non-cupcakes did they run against? The only time UC plays uptempo is against the early cupcakes. Maybe once or twice a year they push it against a quality opponent, but it is very rare.
Very rare. Missouri couple years back would be best example.

Mick really NEVER had pg capable of running. I think he wanted to with cash his leg never held up the demand.

You basically proved my point. When tc score in double digits the entire team struggles scoring at his pace, when we open it up and Shaq scores the entire team is involved. BTW, tc was a top 50 sg in high school not pg.

He wasn't going by offense stats he was going by depth and by depth there are three positions equally the thinnest. And even if you were going by offense stats thomas averaged six and Clark average seven so he was only technically the weakest by one point out of the starters.

I was going by strength of starter along with depth.

Ellis/DeBerry: One of the best centers in the league with one of the better backups in the league. We can slide over another PF if they get in trouble. Overall I would grade this out as an A.

Clark/Moore/Scott: We have one of the better PF's in the conference. We have 3 deep...hopefully we can come up with a good back up between the other two. I would give this a B+ because of the starter and depth. Not to mention we can play DeBerry and Ellis together if need be.

Thomas/Evans: Thomas is an average SF. We have an unproven commodity backing him up. We can slide players over from other positions if need be but I would grade this out as a D+ or C-.

Cobb/Johnson: I think Cobb is going to play a lot more like the end of last season which was pretty good. Johnson is a solid replacement with experience. Evans can play the 2 or 3. I would grade this out as a C+ or B-. Not to mention we can maybe play Jenifer and Caupain together.

Caupain/Jenifer/Cobb: Caupain is one of the better PG in the league. Jenifer should give us some good minutes but if he can't we still have Cobb. Considering the starter and the depth I would give this a B+ or A-. Also, Evans played some PG in high school

Evans at PG? You mean Jenifer?

I dunno if I'd go with a B+ at PF just bc Moore and Scott are so unproven. Although it does help knowing that Ellis could play there if need be.

Hopefully Evans can contribute and boost the SF grade as the year goes on.

Yes, in big games I imagine we are going to try to get about 30 minutes out of Ellis and Clark and perhaps 15 or so out of DeBerry. That's about 75 of the 80 minutes at C and PF coming from a pretty good bunch. I imagine we can get 5 quality minutes from Scott or Moore to fill it out.

In games that aren't as close I expect to see Moore and Scott get more minutes

I've heard a lot of fans who have talked about consistency over the years (usually about scoring) and for the most part it rarely seems to get quantified. It's a very subjective word to use because we might all have different opinions on what it is. So I thought I would take a stab at it...I had Cobb in mind.

We had 4 players score more than 15 points in a game.

Cobb...24, 22, 18, 16, 16
Caupain...20, 19, 16
Ellis...20, 17
Thomas...18

Here is how often our players were in double figures.

Caupain 19
Ellis 18
Cobb 11
Clark 11
Thomas 10
KJ 8

(DeBerry and Quadri didn't really get enough minutes)

The thing about Cobb is that he was in double figures in 8 of his last 14 games (only 3 of his first 20) which would be a pace that would equate to 19 over the course of 34 games which would be more like Ellis and Caupain. Of course he averaged 11 PPG over that stretch too. If we can get that type of scoring and consistency out of him...we will be a much stronger team.
