UC announced that Cronin's contract has been extended through 2018...

per Tommy G twitter: The amended contract provides incentives for academics and clause/incentives for non-conference home scheduling.

Seems like a no brainer, you don't want him on a contract that doesn't extend beyond 4 years. Hopefully he'll earn it.

It appears he has earned it. If he got it, then in the eyes of his bosses, he has earned it. It's certainly not the vote of confidence that Jamie Dixon got.....i.e. 1st round NCAA loss lead to a 10 year contract extension. I don't know why we keep screwing around with these short extensions. Obviously, 5 years is a bare minimum that a coach should have, but if they think he has done amazing, then why not 10? 10 would look far better to future recruits than 5.

With coaches being canned and moving yearly, I am not too sure 5 year or 10 year really makes a big difference to a potential recruit.

Agreed, I really doubt it factors in past five years. And why 5 years instead of 10? Because they're not sure they want to be locked into him that long. 5 years is a good deal for both sides IMO.

weren't you the one on a previous thread who was asking why he hadn't been extended yet and how it could hurt recruiting?

Yes I pointed out that he hadn't been extended, and everyone knows that hurts recruiting. In my opinion, a coach should never get inside of 5 years left on their contract. Cronin's was allowed to get down to almost 4 before they bumped him back to 5. If the administration loves him as everyone claims, and he will be here for life, then make it 10. Why screw around with these tiny extensions and ever allowing him to get inside of 5 years left. He had to recruit for a half year with less than 5 years on his contract. If he's our man, then lock him up long term!

yes, if he is our man. LMAO!

I am very pleased. Quite simply, Cronin is taking UC in the right direction, has UC in positive spotlights, has a great head on his shoulder, and lets face it, I think we all can appreciate the man for WANTING to be here and caring about the university. Stability and success is a good thing.

Seconded.

ICalum08, everyone in the industry understands the quality job Cronin hs done rebuilding the program. Coming in at a affordable salary, committed to being here long term and achieving good results both on and off the court. I personally think the athletic department hit a Home run with his hire.

I would say a double or a triple.

I would say a double or a triple.
considering the financial perimeters they had in conducting the search. Landing a local guy who wouldn't run off the first time a better salary was offered. Couple that with his results and I'd say it was a HR.

Now if your Idea if a HR was bringing in a established name that could attract a ton of one and doners from the day he walked in then yes it was a double or triple. That wasn't gong to happen so I'm giving them a Home run

Your first point is right on the money. I've always agreed with that. I wanted no part of your #2 assumption. I felt from day 1 that Mick was a great hire.

My attitude today is one that has evolved from what I see on the court and from his recruiting....nothing else. Most on here see recruiting and performance as a rosy picture. I disagree. This year was a step backwards on the court. If next year takes another step backwards, then he should take some heat.

Bottom line, when a coach gives us the players we saw this year, the offense we saw this year, the inbounds execution we saw this year, two of the last three recruiting classes being Gaines/Jackson in one, and Rubles in the other, that is not a home run. But, he has provided strengths in other areas...graduation rates, loyalty, player conduct, handling of X fight. So, I give the administration a double/triple...still a good hit, just not a home run.

A step back from what? They made the NCAA Tourney while dealing with several key injuries throughout the year. It's only a step back in that they didn't make the sweet 16 like the year prior. Some people have very unrealistic expectations. It's unfortunate.

Come on Jason. Don't play stupid. You know exactly what I mean. Our play on the court was downright ugly. It didn't resemble the previous season in any way, shape, or form. We finished 10th in our league when we were supposed to be 3rd or 4th. We were a preseason top 20 rank and we end up an 11 seed. Don't give me this unrealistic expectation BS. If we went back to the posts on this forum in October/November, I'll bet 99% had the same expectations I had....and the rest of the college basketball world had. We were supposed to be good, and we had a lot of experienced players returning.

You don't want to give the coach any part of the things that went wrong. That's the part that is unfortunate.
