It's not complicated. The clock starting late does NOT = basket not good.
The clock started late (how late is is a reasonable amount for human reaction is arguable), but the ball was out of his hand with between 0.4 and 0.5 left on the clock. The issue is had it started on time, would that earlier start have canceled out the extra time he was given. That's debatable because you have to account for some reaction time to start the clock. I think it's pretty reasonable to conclude he would have gotten it off with a correct (read regular human delay) start time.
