Cronin to return next year

It comes to no surprise- Just passing it along.

I just talked to UC athletic director Mike Thomas, who confirmed that Mick Cronin would return next season for his fifth season as head coach.

“Coach Cronin is our coach now and he’ll be our coach next year,” Thomas said. “I’m committed to seeing Cincinnati basketball be the best it can be. The university is behind coach Cronin and the team.

“I’m an impatient person and I know the Bearcat Nation is impatient, but I think the needle is headed in the right direction.”

After this season, Cronin has four years remaining on his contract.

(Got this from another site-thought id pass it along)

Good decision. I think we are headed in the right direction we just need to be patient. Next year is a big year however, and if he somehow lands a top 10 class for 2011 we prob need him to stay that year no matter the outcome of next season. (which will be an NCAA year)

With what I expect to return next season, I did not have high hopes for next season anyway. Seeing how UC can barely afford to pay their electric bill, it makes sense to keep MC around rather than pay him $1.5M to sit at home and pay another guy to coach.

I just hopes this does not set the program back too far. If they think attendance this year is bad, wait til they get a load of what happens next year. Maybe they should consider moving the games to one of the local HS gyms?

Exactly!

This is 100% the right decision. Kudos to Thomas for seeing past the negativity and looking into the future.

Hopefully all Bearcat fans, despite your personal feelings, will get on board and support the team. I think you will find that you will be rewarded sooner than you think.

Him returning was a forgone conclusion. It was also done for recruiting purposes.

Everyone knew this would be the decision. What a terrible time to announce it tho, imo.

I don't understand. I think it's a good time. Negativity, justified or not (I think not so much), was spiraling out of control. This announcement will send some of the haters back into their bunkers just as Mick is about to get out there and recruit.

Thomas was asked a question by a reporter. If he doesn't answer, it sends a very bad message. He had to say what he said, and in my opinion it was the right decision.

I don't think that's how it actually works. Koch didn't just happen to run into Thomas and interview him. Thomas I'm sure requested Koch to interview him so he could officially "announce" it.

It's a good move by Thomas. If he intends to bring him back, which I fully expect, he needs to have a show of confidence so that the fans quiet down a bit, and the recruits don't get antsy. Even if he were to let Cronin go, it's still the proper move. In any event, most public statements about coaching is usually only half-truths anyway.

Because in these last few games mick should be fighting for his job. Mick should be going into things with a sense of urgency, knowing that if he doesn't finish with some sort of success he could soon be picking up unemployment checks with the thegreatone. I think it could bring a new fire under this team, which has been needed for a while.

Other than that, these type of situations should be handled in the off season, not during.

As far as this settling disgruntled fans, why should it? Mick has not produced good enough results. No reason why this shouldn't be heard.

As far as keeping the players happy? How do you know? Cash had a FB status up saying, new year, same results... something has to change... Maybe there happy with mick, maybe there not.

As far as bringing him back, well mick should be taking Lance out to dinner cause thats the only hope for a brighter team next year, imo. Lance can make this team a NCAA team, without him I dont see that happening.

Greatone = 40 hours per week
LL = 15 hours per week

Gettin to the point. What makes you think this team plays better with pressure on them??? They play much much better early in the season when the pressure isn't there. This takes pressure off everyone. Puts heat on Mike Thomas. Good move. Smart move.

I think the timing was great for recruiting. High school season is winding down and recruits will get serious about their future. with all the negativity publicly posted this will answer recruits and their parents questions about him being here.

I have made my feelings known but even though I would have gone a different direction, I'll support Coach Cronin another season and the program as well. If you don't want to support the program then I question if you're truly a UC fan. We can't control this anymore than we could have controlled a firing from taking place 5-6 years ago. I think this team is right there. Ten losses of 8 or fewer points. Five of them by 4 or less. I like the returning players and incoming recruits though some don't. I also believe a scholly will be opened and Mick will go hard after a late signee. It will be a wing player that can shoot. All we can do is let it play out. Go Bearcats!!!!!!
