Cronin will return next year

Because in these last few games mick should be fighting for his job. Mick should be going into things with a sense of urgency, knowing that if he doesn't finish with some sort of success he could soon be picking up unemployment checks with the thegreatone. I think it could bring a new fire under this team, which has been needed for a while.

Other than that, these type of situations should be handled in the off season, not during.

As far as this settling disgruntled fans, why should it? Mick has not produced good enough results. No reason why this shouldn't be heard.

As far as keeping the players happy? How do you know? Cash had a FB status up saying, new year, same results... something has to change... Maybe there happy with mick, maybe there not.

As far as bringing him back, well mick should be taking Lance out to dinner cause thats the only hope for a brighter team next year, imo. Lance can make this team a NCAA team, without him I dont see that happening.

Rebuilding is a long term process, it is a marathon, it is not a sprint. What Mick has accomplished in his 4 years shows excellent work and progress. Mick was given a 6 year contract at the beginning because the administration knew it was going to take at least that long to recover. Rome was not built in a day. Those screaming for Mick to be fired have unrealistic expectations on how much time it takes to rebuild from scratch in the Big East (see Tom Crean at Indiana in the Big Ten).

I agree with what you say--interesting on Cahs's facebook status. Though, I saw LS status say "Got the papers ready to sign" earlier this year so you can never really trust that.

I think it speaks volumes to have to bring this up DURING the season--if you have to mention this during the season then you know something is wrong. Fans arent stupid-needing a statement like this is not a good thing. I agree with you 100%

Everyone knew this would be the decision. What a terrible time to announce it tho, imo.

I know Lance announced publicly that he will be returning for another season but maybe behind the scenes he is still undecided on what he wants to do.

Maybe Thomas is keeping Cronin around another year to help persuade Lance to stay another year. Maybe?

I like this team even if Lance doesn't return. Kilpatrick will play some at the 3 if that happens. Even if Lance stays Kilpatrick has the advantage of practicing for a full season. A luxury Cashmere didn't have. So the transition to the speed of D1 ball won't be as difficult for him. Justin Jackson will provide non-stop energy and he will play right away for 10-15 minutes a game. The other benefit is his consistently high motor will push Gates every single day in practice. This team has lacked a blue collar type low post player for years and Jackson will provide that.

My concern will again be who makes outside shots consistently? I have said I think Micks goes after a shooter, actually some are already in play, this spring. But a freshman is always going to be spotty and streaky.

If Lance stays he will take a huge step in terms of making others better. We've seen him doing that the past several games. He's forcing less, making great passes, and starting to take the ball to the hole instead of shooting jump shots.

Hopefully Mick raises his game as well and makes those of us that think a chnage was warranted wrong. Either way, I'll be hoping the best and the offseason should be a fun one to follow.

I just talked to UC athletic director Mike Thomas, who confirmed that Mick Cronin would return next season for his fifth season as head coach. “Coach Cronin is our coach now and he’ll be our coach next year,” Thomas said.* “I’m committed to seeing Cincinnati basketball be the best it can be. The university is behind [...]

"This shits ah joke"

Take it for what it is. But so far, the average fan is gone, the "true" fans are leaving, and the players are questioning things.

Players expressing frustration does not necessarily indicate they don't have faith in their coach, if that's what you're implying.

I myself called this game a joke in the game thread, yet I still believe Mick can get it done. Anybody that's not pissed about what happened today doesn't have a pulse...or is rooting against the team.

It's never about rooting against the team, but an honest critique of what's wrong, and what is needed to become better. Teams from every sport has to deal with this. If you take their money, then you have to accept some negativity when things aren't going so well.
We do need to keep in mind that there are things to be positive about.

Absolutely agree. What I'm trying to say is that LL's point in mentioning Cash's facebook status in a thread specifically about whether Mick Cronin should be coaching next year is an implication that the players are turning against Mick. That's a terribly flawed assumption to make based on the lack of any real evidence. Sorry about the length of that sentence.

Take it for what its worth. Players have emotion, no doubt. But the fact that UC peaked in November should tell you about something going on. Teams regardless should make improvement throughout the year. The excuse has always been, well players are getting tired, we dont have the depth to finish strong... whats the new excuse?

I agree. A lot of Mick defenders bring up how little we had to start with and NIT (which we might not make) is still improvement...but we looked good in Maui- a tournament team for sure. Dissipointing.

UHHHHH what else did you expect? :D

On a serious note, I do kind of agree with a point ll made later in the thread. That in november this team looked good. I had no doubt they were a tournament team. What happened to them? I was thinking about starting a thread about improvement. Not on Mick, but rather has this team improved this year? I don't know that it has.

I agree with all the points made later in this thread. This team finishes badly, and they peaked in November. But let's not start making up stuff about how the players feel to make that point.

For all we know, these players love Mick. That being said, it doesn't change the fact that he's doing something wrong.

UC can't seem to beat quality teams at their place. Not good.

Not sure what Mick has in mind for next year, but I suspect changes are coming. I can't imagine doing the same thing and expecting different results would be his gameplan.

This from Mr. Homer himself...Lance

The pressure on UC and Mick
My dad and I were talking about th is over the weekend. Consider what UC and Mick are up against.
Mick is four years into rebuilding the program and has not made the NCAA tournament.
Meanwhile....
*Bob Huggins, the man the university road out of town, is headed to the Final 4
*Frank Martin, a member of Huggins' UC staff just took Kansas St to the Elite 8 for first time since 1988
*Andy Kennedy, former UC interim coach, has Ole Miss in the NIT Final 4
*Crosstown rival Xavier is one of only two teams making the Sweet 16 the last three seasons
*In-state team's OSU made it to the Sweet 16, and Ohio University won an NCAA game
*Tri-state team's.... Butler is Final Four bound, Purdue made it to the Sweet 16, UK advanced to the Elite 8, Louisville made the NCAA
*Baylor basketball, near the death penalty in 2003 for major violations that included covering up the death of one teammate at the hands of another, made it to the Elite Eight this year. They made the NCAA tournament in '08 and finished second in the '09 NIT. Baylor's coach resigned, they had scholarships reduced for the '05 and '06 seasons, were barred from playing any non-conference games for the 2005-06 season, and had the NCAA reduce their paid recruiting visits from twelve to nine for the '06-'07 season
*The University of Cincinnati athletic department is facing a $24-million dollar debt.

Think Mick's seat isn't a little warm?
