"The job Mick Cronin has done at UC might be the most underrated in the last 10 years of college basketball.
If the fans are not going to recognize and appreciate that then maybe UC should go D-2"---Mike DeCourcy, The Sporting News, on Sports Talk

I agree with him on the underrated part, it is just wrong, that fans still fight against Mick and this team. What is there to be upset about that Mick or the players have done at this point?

I've seen DeCourcy make several Mick and UC related statements in the last couple years. I have a feeling that Mick and Mike are boys and Mike makes these statements with some degree of emotion involved.

At this point, its just time to move on and focus on the team. If there are haters out there, I think they should be left behind.

Could be but Mike has said for years that Mick is one of the most talent guys in college basketball.

They are "boys", not that that is a bad thing. DeCourcy used to live in Cincy and cover UC.

I don't know that they are "boys" so to speak but I do know that DeCourcy is one of the best, if not THE best, college hoops writers in the country. He is always very fair and brings a unique perspective to everything he covers. Mike has never struck me as one to let his emotions get in the way of his reporting. I personally think he is right in his comment. Whether it is a minority of the fans or not, it is a very vocal segment of the fan base that refuses to give Mick any credit or at least acknowledge what he walked into. Go check out DeCourcy on twitter (@tsnmike) and read some of the crap people have posted about Mick and it's easy to see why he said what he said.

It is nice to have someone in the National Media recognize what Mick has done at UC and publicize it. If it wasn't for Mike, no one would hear about it around the country. We all know that ESPN won't mention UC even exists unless they absolutely have to.

Why is this a d bag comment. Just 3 weeks ago people on here were calling for Cronins head. There is a good portion of this fanbase that does not deserve success. Do you think the fans that held up the 'Fire Mick' sign last year at the Villanova game deserve to celebrate that the Cats are going to the NCAA's this year. I'm sure they are sitting back and saying how glad they are for being proved wrong, and are happy to eat crow. All the while they made it more difficult for the program to succeed and made it easier for other programs to recruit against UC. Conversely, the Indiana fanbase deserves to have a successful program, as they support the university unconditionally. They always have, and always will.

I have to agree with you. Its one thing for people to have questioned Cronin or to want a different coach, but to go as far as to hold up signs on national TV does hurt the program. Its real easy for an opposing coach to find examples of how unloyal our fans are. People in this town need to learn to support the TEAM. We have an unhealthy obsession with coaches.

Agreed, it's not a bad thing. I'm just pointing out the fact that there is clearly emotion involved in his statements. It is a bad thing for someone is his role to let him emotion show through in his work, but whatever, that's his problem to worry about.

I think the UC fans "recognize and appreciate" the job Cronin has done this year, I know I do.
As for last year, count me as one of those who thought he should be fired.

Call it bias or looking through rosy Bearcat Red glasses or what have you but from where I sit, looking at his career I'd say Mike has very little to worry about in terms of job security. As has been stated on here, he's one of the nation's best.

Decourcy has been around UC basketball for a long time. His sources are sometimes questionable at best despite his reputation ex: Huggins is gone to WVU. Wrong answer.

His shot at UC fans is well deserved for the majority of fans and boosters. Most of the people on this board don't qualify fortunately. There was always a subset of us that supported the program regardless of coach and those of us that fit that description have been vindicated this year.

i think his comment is a generalization thats why its dumb. but anyways i think a whole new generation of uc fans is going to rise and we will once have a strong fan base again. so we wont have to worry about those fans that wanted mick out ever since he got here

Agreed. Well put.

"The opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference"--Elie Wiesel. We probably are not that much different toward our coaches than any other town. If you are all in for your team, you are going to bitch and moan and worry about your team. I can remember my old man complaining about Sparky "freakin" Anderson, and the way he handled his pitching staff.....I was never a Mick hater, but I was concerned. Coaches are like players, they can also improve over time. I think Mick does a much better job at running a game now, than he did 2 or 3 years ago. I think this program has turned the corner. It's been an interesting ride.........

Perhaps you are right. I've just never heard of people stop following a program because of a coach/manager. Fans have every right to not like a coach/manager if they don't like the results on the field/court but this town seems to only want to follow teams if they approve of the coach. Literally five minutes after Kelly announced he was leaving I got a text from a friend that gets season tickets with us and said he wouldn't renew his tickets.
