You sent wrong message benching your best player for playing with fire. NOBODY played with any type fire today
Bulldog, you hit this one square. As soon as I saw Caupain on the bench, I feared they were sending him the wrong message. First time he shows some competitive fire and leadership and gets benched (for what I consider to be dubious technicals at best). Sure enough, he played about as passively as a player can play.
As encouraging as Thursday was, today was equally if not more discouraging. They somnambulated through the majority of the game. Tentative and passive. As I said about that game in Cincy, Lebo is a good coach and he had his team ready to play. They beat UC in transition. They were hungrier. They caught UC reading their press clippings and benching players for no reason and took full advantage.
Forget the conference title. You start losing games at East Carolina and you can stop talking about any kind of NCAA tourney berth. The good news is, clearly you can't read anything into whichever game was just played so maybe the team catches fire and plays lights out in Dallas this Thursday. But you have to play with an edge on the road and this team shows no kind of consistent edge. I could wax nostalgic about the UC teams of old that loved nothing more than to go into an inferior opponents' gym and beat them senseless, but why make ourselves even sadder?
We should stop making double-digit win predictions and accept the fact that until this team develops some kind of killer instinct and consistent will to win, we will continue the ebb and flow of the past 4 days. Some brilliance, some incompetence, and more than likely the NIT. Doesn't mean I'm sour on them, nor will I watch any less or root any less, but they are who they are until they prove otherwise.
