Help Support BearcatTalk:

I stopped reading at the bolded portion. Nobody has once worshiped Mick in this entire debate. Can a mod please move this debate to another thread? Maybe a permanent "Thoughts on Mick" thread for everyone so critical of him to vent and cycle through their broken record posts.

You didn't seem all that concerned about the thread going off topic when you were saying that people who aren't happy with Cronin are stubborn old grumps. So why can you say that one day, then complain about responses that spun off of your post the next day?

The BOT is like the rest of sports management in this town, too nice or "we're Cincinnati we can't do any better or we can't afford it". Case in point, Marvin Lewis is still coaching the Bengals, Brian Price was hired to manage the Reds, Tommy Tuberville and Mick Cronin are extended.
Not saying I agree with you but what does that say about the results they have delivered. Mick deals with a ineffective BOT and still makes the dance 6 years running. No mater how you view that it is a accomplishment that is hard to do. Marvin Lewis has built the bengals into a yearly playoff participant while working for Mike Brown. Brian Price is coaching a rebuilding team that is trading all its most marketable players. I think Tuberville is on a short leash. He has funds and facilities. He should be dominating this conference. There isn't a UCONN national champion to deal with a hall of fame coach in Larry Brown to contend with or a Sampson. The Reds are in similar trouble. Chicago has hired Theo Epstein and with their market and a guy who knows what he is doing they will be tough for years to come. Bryan Price is here because they have no shot to win and replacing him would be a cost with no results. The bengals are owned by the Brown family need I say more.

Lol, if you recall, I then posted that I completely regret getting into it. I was heated and didn't help to this going off-topic. Been trying to help it the last 4 or so posts. But it's your call, Mr. Mod.

Ha, well the cat was already out of the bag.

Feel free to open any thread you'd like. And if posts belong there, we can start directing them that way.

just curious - why should we be a top 15 program? because we won two championships 50 years ago and went to a final four 25 years ago?

ancient history doesn't matter. times change. the 90s aren't coming back.

Why shouldn't we be??? I'll assume you'll say that we should have realistic expectations and if that's the case then why shouldn't we at least be expecting that we're trending towards being a top 15 program?

The first 5 or 6 years of Mick's reign everyone loved to say the program had gotten better every year under Mick's watch. Well that's certainly not the case anymore is it? We peaked the year Yancy was a senior and we went to the Sweet 16, it's been pretty much flat or trending downhill since then.

So would you just have everyone never expect progress or to be better and just be happy no matter what the results?? I agree that with the current players and coach it's not realistic to expect a top 15 team, but it is realistic to expect a trend towards top 15. I don't see that happening.

Now if we didn't have this current coach we might be able to raise our expectations once again, or we might find ourselves in the gutter.......that's the risk we'd be taking.

ancient history means nothing.

lol, yea the history and tradition of college basketball means nothing.

I'm sure when fans hear their teams called storied, or tradition rich they just shake their heads and say that doesn't matter.

History and tradition is one of the things that makes the college landscape so special.

Ever wonder why the Big o gets so much face time?

when you're in the camp that wants cincinnati to be on par with the dukes, kansases and north carolinas of the world, i think the burden of proof is on you.

so, again, let me ask: why should we be a top fifteen program? decent (but highly saturated) market, solid (but not outstanding) facilities, decent budget (but low relative to the average major college athletic department), decent academics (not really, but i'll call it that).

what reason is there to expect to be one of the best programs in the country?

what does ancient history have to do with the future? having been good in the past is not a promise to be good forever.

Coachpipe.

Lol! Jason certainly made the question more difficult to answer by asking who we would rather have than Mick. It would take forever to type down all those names. Can we instead answer who we wouldn't want instead of Mick. That list is much shorter. I wouldn't want to get carpal tunnel answering his first question.

Because we proved that we could be top 10-15 for well over a decade with a better coach running the show not too long ago. Mick is #22 in coach's salary. Our team isn't performing anywhere near #22 in the nation. He is ranked in the 40s as a coach. We're definitely over-paying for the results he's giving us. If we're going to pay at #22, then let's get a coach that is capable of recruiting and winning at that level.

i mean, overachieving for a period of time while being led by a hall of fame coach is not a reason to expect to overachieve forever.

i think that success may have been taken a bit for granted.

When we hired that coach, he had coached Walsh College, and a few years at Akron. Not a one of us knew who in the heII he was. The same happened with Shaka Smart, Mark Few, Brad Stevens, Archie Miller, Thad Matta, Chris Mack, Skip Prosser, etc., etc. Huggs wasn't a hall of fame coach then. He was a young up and coming coach trying to move up. He became a hall of fame coach (we're assuming) because of what he achieved here and then at other schools. Mick could have done the same thing. But, it's apparent he doesn't have it in him. Unfortunately, we'll get to see him keep trying to be something for 5 or 6 more years now. We'll spend $80 million and the results will be the same. In Huggs' case, the coach elevated the program. In Mick's case, the team is going to have to elevate him. It'll take one of those great chemistry teams to come out of nowhere and achieve something special to maybe turn it around for Mick. It hasn't happened for 10 years. I don't expect it to happen anytime soon either. We've seen his best already I believe.

i understood your point right up to you went into the whole his team will have to alleviate him. If your going to hang him for his lack of success you need to praise him for his accomplishments. I also feel comparing Huggins and Mick's career are very different animals. Lots of changes in college athletics. Lots of changes at the University.

This has to be one of the most idiotic things I've read. I keep coming back to this site and this thread hoping for someone talking about the arena or actual recruiting news, but get garbage like this. I keep reading and not saying anything, but my goodness. Do you honestly NOT understand what Mick inherited here (1 scholarship player in one of the best leagues in the history of college basketball) and what he's turned the program into? That being a constant winner who goes to the tournament every year.

If you can't understand what college athletics have become and how the financial arms race has change everything, then stop watching.

I swear, the level of negativity on here just blows my mind. Do you root for the Bearcats or you just enjoy rooting against them?

The fact that people can't actually enjoy anything that's happening is sad. The team has been doing well. We are getting our dump of an arena upgraded and there is at least a chance of moving to the Big 12, but I come here and read...this.

At least I'm aware that most fans get it and these are just the proverbial squeaky wheels, but my goodness. Thanks to so many people on here for running people away from these sites with constant posts about how everything sucks and how we should all hate Mick.

There are roughly 350 schools in D1 basketball, if you don't think at least 300 or more would like to trade places with our success, then you clearly don't know what you are talking about.

Man reading through this post and this place has become a joke. Who cares whether you love or hate Cronin. I don't know about the rest of you but I love Cincinnati basketball (i know you do too). I'm excited for the renovations, think it will be great. Can't wait to watch Troy, Gary, Evans, Cumberland, and Washington play next year, wish the season started tomorrow.

Its utterly baffling that some of you let whether you like or hate the coach influence you like it does. Could Cronin be better, absofreakinglutely, but he's our coach and I love our program so I'll place my support with him and the team. Some of you need to realize he's not going anywhere whether that's right or wrong, so scratch your ass and get happy.

We have a lot of positives happening right now, solid team coming back, facility renovations, possible invite to B12 (still holding out hope). Basically the point of this post was to encourage all of you to quit the same old tired debate as it's getting worn out, tired, and old. By now we all know which camp you fall in, so give it up.

Go Bearcats!

So basically we should just be happy to have a basketball team and celebrate the results no matter what?
