UC’s Gaines will be red-shirted
Posted by bkoch 12/29/10, 2:34 pm

UC has decided to red-shirt freshman center Kelvin Gaines.

The 6-foot-10, 225-pound Gaines, from Jacksonville, Fla, has not played this season and wasn’t expected to get much playing time on a veteran team as the rest of the season unfolds.

“Obviously, we’ve got a lot of older guys in front of him,” Cronin said. “He’s the fastest and highest jumping of all of our big guys, but he hasn’t had much coaching and hasn’t played much organized basketball. He knew all that when he committed. We all knew this was a possibility. It’s a luxury because he’s going to be a really good player.”

Gaines was slowed for a month during the pre-season with a dislocated shoulder, which made it likely that he would be held out this season.

But Cronin said even if Gaines had not been hurt, he was a likely candidate to be red-shirted.

“There’s no sense wasting a year of a guy,” he said.

This is what would have been done with Darnell Wilks if the program wasn't in the position it was in 2007.

what you bolded stuck out to me for sure... thats very interesting.

Although mick does talk up his players, he always has. Time will tell.

I think what Mick said is spot on and not talking Gaines up past his ability or potential at all. He basically called him an incredibly athletic big man who's extremely raw... which, by all accounts is what he is.

That decision was a no-brainer. Let three to four bigs get some time, as well as Wilks.

i have been a Gaines advocate all along, but think that the red shirt year will only do him some good. He has a NBA body with great athleticism, but my question is he is the fastest and Highest jumping of all the bigs, is Wilks considered a big? Because if he is faster and A higher jumping then him, then the sky is the limit......Just being more athletic than gates is pretty good, and even better if he is truly 6'-10".. ( i think he is only about 6'-8" though.)

I don't think Wilks is considered a big. He isn't more athletic than him. And I'd say Gaines is closer to 6'7" - 6'8".

The frontline is my concern going into next season. Ellis is way too thin. Gaines will only need to rebound and defend. Points from him will be a bonus. Gates will be back. Gates, Jackson, and Gaines. We need one more guy with some size that can hold his own defensively and rebounding. Let's see what the late signing period brings.
