Game Thread: UC vs. Alabama

From the enquirer this morning:

"Cronin has no qualms about considering Alabama a ranked opponent because he believes the Crimson Tide is the best team UC has played so far this season"

Good teams find ways to win. Seniors step up in crunch time. Good win against a quality opponent. Wasn't preety but it is a win.

Overall I thought the energy from the team wasn't good. Good effort but they seemed a step slow to me today. Reminded me of the St. Johns game last season.

I thought the air went out of the team when Bama went to the full-court pressure and we attacked it by dribbling backwards and barely beating the 10 second call every time down. It also didn't help that we couldn't grab a defensive rebound, thus no transition game.

It's nice to be discussing this stuff after a win though. In terms of individual talent Bama might be one of the most talented teams we play all year. They are just inexperienced.

Was at the game. Not much of a voice left. I think Cash had a ton on his shoulders today. First, Cronin said he didn't practice until Friday to try to get Cash's shoulder to heal. Second, he was breaking a press the entire game without much help. Third, he was guarding the other teams best player. They did not move enough on offense, which led him to dribbling a ton of the game, even in the half court. Literally no movement on offense. I didn't see many screens off the ball at all (I actually can't remember one)...they were just spread out and going with all on-ball screens...interesting approach. I mean you gotta set screens for SK when he doesn't have the bal. I can't tell if the spread/lack of movement was Mick or if that was just our players standing still but clearly we need to move the ball more, and have players move without the ball. Mick said after the game that this was a problem, and it led to Alabama never being out of position which made it hard for us to get open shops, and also helped them dominate on the boards. He clearly knows what the problem was but needs to get that point across to the team.

Observations:
-Alabama is really good. I think that's a top 20-25 team.
-I could be in the minority...but Rubles is infuriating. I might be missing something but he looks completely out of control to me. I'm guessing he lights it up in practice b/c Cronin lets him keep going. By the end of the game, I really was fed up with him and hoping Mick would sit him down altogther. At one point with 3 minutes left, he got the ball at the top of the key, and you could hear a meaningful amount of fans say "Nooo." With the 3 amigos, I think it's pretty assumptive for him to be going 1-on-1 so much and forcing shots. Anyone else feel this way?
-The ref with the gray hair was horrible. The other one was good but we definitely got jobbed on a few calls.
-Cheik was strong today
-I thought G-lawn gave some good minutes. He's gotta keep working on those handles for next season though.

Altogether, a dog fight against a really tough team. I wish our offense would have been more sound with ball movement and we would break the press easier but, we stuck it out against a solid team and found a way to win. Mick will have plenty to work on which is good...gotta keep getting better.

7-0 baby! 3 more and Santa shaves his head...

Was at the game today...what a game...walked away with two major concerns: 1) rubles cannot dribble left, and has trouble dribbling right...Cronin seems committed to him handling the ball and that worries me... 2) guyn is not the backup PG...he sits in the corner and waits for the ball...he plays like a SG...a PG should always want the ball in his hands...I love Guyn's defensive energy, but he is not a reliable substitute for Cash offensively...

Sanders is really coming into his own...he seems to have the highest bball IQ and it showed today when he was in the lineup...I am excited to see his growth

A hard fought win today...very ugly, but they fought til the buzzer...this team's scrappiness make it easy to love this team...

Go Bearcats!

Wow.......... You obviously havn't watched any other games besides this one if you arn't impressed with rubles...... he is the reason why we beat Oregon, I don't know if you have ever heard of someone having a bad game. I agree he shouldn't be taking threes, but he is by far are best player when it comes to taking the ball to the rim.

One bad game and everyone on the board panics, come on people Rubles is the real deal you just wait.

Rubles is the real deal. As soon was he becomes more decisive in going to the hoop he will be money. Too many times he was pump faking with a defender 5 feet away from him. I really don't think he needs to be shooting 3's too. Rubles is a solid 6'7, when he drives he has the ability to shoot over his guy, he needs to realize that and go to the hoop. With his size and athletic ability he can hang in the air and change his shot.

I wish I could have taken a picture of the Alabama players faces. OMG, they looked soooo sad walking off the court, it was priceless.

Relax...I've watched every non-exhibition game and prior to his streak at the end of the Oregon (which you are correct....did save us), I felt the same way about him in that game. I think it is in him but I think he is out of control for the most part and shoots way too much. 14 shots in 25 minutes for Rubles today. Not seeing why that's a good thing at this point. I do trust Mick though. And if Mick's letting him go, he must be more talented than he's demonstrated thus far.

Also...I'm not panicking and I hope you are right and he is the "real deal". But now, he looks like he's out of control and a chucker. Lots of pull up bricks and way off 3s (not just today). I hope he plays great this season, people revisit this post down the road and say Hey Hicks..."look how dumb you look in this post. You were wrong and you're stupid." That would be fine with me, and I'll take it a lot better than McRalph.

And Parker is our best player in getting the ball to the rim. In my book, SK and Cash are also both better.

Did anyone else notice Alabama really smoozing it up with the ref with white hair. Damn did he replace Timmy Higgins??! Every break in the game I saw the head coach of Bama and or a player making out with that terrible ref.

Rubles had a pretty clutch shot that tied the game at 54 with 1:02 left and played well last game when the rest of the team was struggling.

I cheered and recognize that Rubles has hit some big shots this season...I am just concerned that we may see him bring the ball up the court with a press and he has not shown that he has the handles...and if I am an opposing coach, I am going to force him left every time until he shows he can beat me...love the kids athleticism and potential, just have some concerns with his role

Mick is searching for another scorer because he knows teams will double SK. Sean has to be more agressive. Saw multiple times he could have drove today and he passed it up. Sanders looks better and better to me. He is efficient. Like to see him get more court time. JD3 needs to be better defensively and not force his passes.

That's John Cahill, he's been around the block before. Not one of my favorites but he's been doing Bearcat games and other national programs for as long as I can remember.

I had to work and didnt get to see any of the game. Id assume we played solid D and rebounded ok. Id also assume we struggled again in the half court offense among other things....

We are a really good team, the frustrating thing is we could be a great team
