I think yesterday's game showed alot. Alabama did a great job of exposing our weaknesses. They dared JJ and Rubles to shoot outside and it payed off. Our guards struggled against their bigger guards. Maybe some of it has to do with the early start time, which is tiring and horrible if true. These guys need to learn to play afternoon games. Alabama came in with a great gameplan and we struggled. My only hope was they would wear themselves out pressing the last 30 minutes of the game. I saw them huffing and puffing during timeouts and I think it could be seen in the last four minutes or so that Alabama didn't look as sharp. We can't blame the refs for anything either, sure there were bad calls, but they let the teams play and no one was in foul trouble. I think Mbodj needs to learn when to go for blocks and when to stay down to rebound. He jumped on every shot and that takes you out for rebounds. I love that Mick trusted in Cash to take the ball and do something with the last play. I love that Cash drove to the rim and got off the best shot he could and had the confidence to do it.
One other point I want to make and one that I think is our biggest question mark for the season. When to play JJ and when to play Rubles. Rubles helps tremendously on the offensive end and JJ helps tremendously on the defensive side of things. Yesterday Rubles got the majority of time. I think Mick knew we needed a weapon on offense and he is the only one outside of the guards. Our guards were outsized yesterday and really struggled. They took away our outside shot and driving on them was tough with their length and the fact the refs were letting the teams be physical. The D they played on Rubles was perfect. Step off him so you don't buy the head fake. They dared him to shoot and he airred two three-balls. With that said Rubles still did some things well on the offensive end and made some big buckets. (I guess every bucket is big in a 58-56 win). On the other side of things we struggled to rebound. Rubles is an effective rebounder, but JJ is an excellent rebounder. Mbodj is a shot-blocker and not in a position to rebound, I like his ability to block shots, but you have to find that balance. There are times I wish Cronin would play both Rubles and JJ. Yesterday might have been the day. Our D got burned for a number of easy lay-ups in the half-court. I'll chalk it up to good game-planning and good execution on their part, but I got to think JJ would've made better adjustments down there and not given them so many easy looks. I was glad to see JJ get in down the stretch. As soon as he got in he started grabbing rebounds. And he read that last play from Alabama perfectly and came up with the big play.
