Gunner Kiel

It will be interesting moving forward to follow the Kiel narrative.

The last time a QB started every game for UC was a long time ago, so history trends toward at least 2 QB's will start at some point this season and most likely a third will play (has already). Will be interesting to see what happens when/if a hand is forced. Looking at the way he left things last year, and knowing that he was behind in the pre-season is he in game shape? CTT stated that QB race was tight at higher ground. Didn't Gunner play in spring game?

Dude, he was never going to play in the NFL come on.
Going into his second year for the cats he was a top 10 QB prospect. Not only did he have NFL potential, if he would have stayed on the same trajectory he would have been a sure thing.

He threw 31 TD passes his first season after sitting out of competitive football for 2 years. He's a former #1 overall recruit in the nation with all the physical tools and size to be a prototypical NFL QB. He WAS going to play in the NFL and the fact that he now isn't is very surprising. It's pretty amazing how far this guy fell over the course of last season.

There were a decent amount of analysts prior to the start of last season who had him on their Heisman watch lists and I saw more than a couple of early mock drafts that had Kiel listed as a first or second round pick.

#UC QB situation, Tuberville says:
'We'll probably have the same starter (Moore),' but will make a move if turnovers continue.

So tired of this QB mind games.

Me too. Pick a stinking QB and go with it. Now Moore is going to be playing, looking over his shoulder, trying not to make mistakes. That's when you make the most mistakes. You can't be hesitant as a QB.

Quite honestly I'm not enamored with any of the 3. Kiel gets hurt every other play and Moore just doesn't make enough plays. I also believe there are other issues they will not make public concerning Kiel. Trail, I haven't seen enough to say but him not beating out Moore is a statement in itself

Part of Kiel's injuries were the results of poor play calling. He was treated as a rb many times.

I agree with you about Trail. Maybe none of the QB's are able to grasp this complex offense. Lol

Its a physical game and most teams are moving to a more mobile QB. Really think there is more to this then we will ever know.

To be fair, I don't think Tuberville has wavered once he announced Moore as the starter. He's said he wants to get snaps for Trail & Kiel, but he's said Moore is the guy as long as he performs. That's pretty much always a given.

On the other side though, he has also not definitively come out and said that Moore is our quarterback. Before the season started he said Moore is our QB right now.

Stop it. Just because someone puts up a bunch of stats in college in an offense that basically only throws doesn't mean they'll he an NFL quarterback. He didn't have very good vision, his arm was weak, not very mobile, and his body was made of paper. He's a worse quarterback then both Pike and Collaros and neither of them really even got a shot in the NFL. The reason he didn't play competitive football for 2 years was because he wasn't good enough to start at other places.

HORSEFEATHERS---You are full of it, and I don't mean feathers.

Ummmmmm.....he's a former #1 overall recruit. His arm isn't weak and he has all the tools to be a prototypical NFL pocket passer. You're simply wrong in saying anything otherwise. The reason he sat out for 2 years was because he transferred all over the place like an idiot. First a commitment to IU, then to LSU, then finally to ND and after one year at ND eventually a transfer to UC.

Clearly there's some issues with this kid that have derailed what was once a very promising career.

There is simply no way to prove that he was going to play in the NFL. Yes he was a top recruit, that guarantees nothing. There are no quotes from any scout or NFL president stating that they would select him with their pick if he were eligible. He was glass Joe last year and had off field issues. If you feel that he is going to play in the NFL select him on your fantasy team.

Of course there isn't.......top tier college recruits bust all the time and never make the NFL. Sometimes a QB doesn't develop the awareness required to get to the next level. That's not the point.........

The point is that it's much more shocking that a former #1 overall recruit coming out of high school isn't going to make the pros than it is unbelievable that he ever could. People acting like it's crazy to think Kiel would ever have a chance to play in the pros are forgetting how crazy talented the kid actually was. It's not like he was some slapdick kid coming out of nowhere, he was literally the #1 QB prospect in the entire country.

I think there's a lot of people here who could never imagine that a QB coming out of UC could make the pros so they naturally had low expectations for Kiel. (you know, the same types of people who think Cronin is an awesome basketball coach). It's crazy how little attention that fact that Kiel is now our 3rd string QB actually gets.

I'm sure if you spent some time on google you'd see that there were reputable sports writers before the start of last season that had very high expectations for Kiel. Most people did, because they were warranted.

I'm not saying I think he's a bad quarterback. I'm saying from what I saw I couldn't see him being an NFL quarterback. Could he put ups stats in college ball? Yea, he could do okay. But throwing under 60% in college in a spread offense isn't that impressive. Tony Pike had only 2 less touchdowns but 7 less picks and was a 6th round pick who barely sniffed the field once.

But I do agree with you it's crazy to think one of the top QBs coming out of high school is the number 3 QB on a non power 5 school.

Going back 10 years (including this one) Kiel had the highest and 4th highest QB rating of all the QB's who played the most downs during the season. That includes all of the years of Kelley, Jones, and TT.

That includes Pike, Collaros, Mauk, Legeaux, Kay, and Moore so far this year.

Kiel 151.9 (2015)
Mauk 150.6
Pike 149.8
Kiel 149.4 (2014)
Kay 148.9
Moore 139.8 (this year)
Collaros 137.5
Pike 136.4
Collaros 131.8
Legeaux 125.7

Kiel may have thrown some pick 6's which cost us...but other than that he played at a high level. He may have been made of paper but he toughed it out.
