Gunner Kiel

Help Support BearcatTalk:

Going back 10 years (including this one) Kiel had the highest and 4th highest QB rating of all the QB's who played the most downs during the season. That includes all of the years of Kelley, Jones, and TT.

That includes Pike, Collaros, Mauk, Legeaux, Kay, and Moore so far this year.

Kiel 151.9 (2015)
Mauk 150.6
Pike 149.8
Kiel 149.4 (2014)
Kay 148.9
Moore 139.8 (this year)
Collaros 137.5
Pike 136.4
Collaros 131.8
Legeaux 125.7

Kiel may have thrown some pick 6's which cost us...but other than that he played at a high level. He may have been made of paper but he toughed it out.

Going back to last year his completion % was 65.2 vs Moore at 59.1. TD to INt was 19-11 and Moore was 9-11. The decision to play Moore this year basically had nothing to do with on the field stats and probably everything to do with off the field circumstances.

Amen. I am just guessing but I think it stems back to Kiel's issue with substance addiction.

I'm not saying I think he's a bad quarterback. I'm saying from what I saw I couldn't see him being an NFL quarterback. Could he put ups stats in college ball? Yea, he could do okay. But throwing under 60% in college in a spread offense isn't that impressive. Tony Pike had only 2 less touchdowns but 7 less picks and was a 6th round pick who barely sniffed the field once.

But I do agree with you it's crazy to think one of the top QBs coming out of high school is the number 3 QB on a non power 5 school.

Pike had a very weak arm compared to NFL QB's. Collaros was too short to get serious consideration. I think Kay and Kiel were more NFL prototypical pocket passers with their height and arm although Kiel may be lacking in arm strength. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get NFL workouts (and maybe make a team roster) even if he doesn't play a down this year.

Also just because he is 3rd on the depth chart clearly wasn't due to performance on the field. The shock to me would be that he is on the depth chart at all if he's not going to be on the field.

I agree it wasn't due to performance, I don't think Moore is anything special by any means.

From article yesterday:

Kiel rejoined the Bearcats in January, then played sparingly in spring football because of a shoulder/back ailment.

...So it can't be anything physical??

Nobody truly knows what the situation is, just speculation

It could certainly be a current physical issue. However, it would be hard to debate it's due to past performance. Statistically he has arguably been the best of a string of pretty good QBs as it relates to QB ratings. Not to mention he seemed to be very emotionally vested in the games...he was one of the team's best cheerleaders on the field. He battled through numerous injuries and played through as many as he could.

Perhaps I am reading him wrong...but I liked having a guy like that on the field.

SMH, so now we are speculating that GK is the best cheerleader on the team?

I saw Moore take a direct shot from a unblocked lineman and low and behold he played through the injury.

My take, he sees action the second half of Miami game and potentially starts against USF.

Interesting that's all you took from that. Smh

i saw moore take a direct shot from a lineman, limp to the sideline, then sit out while some dork who's not gunner kiel came in to do nothing.

Because being able to take a hit is by far the most important part of a QB. And leadership skills are just something to mock..

Right Kiel does get hurt a lot, but injuries happen, it is a contact sport.. And that dork will be the leader of the program soon, don't get too crazy.

Part of Kiel's injuries were the results of poor play calling. He was treated as a rb many times.

I agree with you about Trail. Maybe none of the QB's are able to grasp this complex offense. Lol

Bingo!! Not sure what coach tommy was trying to do. All the quarterback Keepers and short runs coming off off injury. I kept wondering what is going on and it kept continuing.

It's funny, we took Kiel who is a natural pocket passer and tried to fit him into an offense that revolved around the use of read option. Now that we have an offense that is more suited for Kiel's strengths we have him wasting away on the bench. The entire handling of the Kiel situation probably has me more at odds with the leadership of Tuberville than anything else he's done since he's been here.

Again I have to believe there is more to the coaches decision to not play Kiel than performance. Could be injury or off field issues or a combination of both. No coach who's worth a damn could look at Kiel and say he's not the most talented QB on this roster hands down.

So darn true. The irony right?! I think we will see Gunner play a significant role this year.

You know this is one of those cases were fans banter back and forth but really have very little information to base a opinion on. In this case I really have to trust that all coaches want to win and will play the player who gives them the best chance whenever possible. Just seems to me like there is many moving parts in this situation. At this point I just have to trust the decision of the staff and hope the team wins. Speculating the how's and why's with the info available is not very useful.

True. At first I was like, wth is wrong with our coaches. The longer Gunner doesnt play, the more I think it's some form of personal issue with Kiel.

I said this exact same thing last week.
