Houston Game Thread: Our true rival in the league

Props for saying this early in the game. That small lineup worked in the second half

To be fair to Vogt, he played quite a bit better in the second half. But the Diarra/Scott lineup was in for the majority of our run.

We've been using Diarra as Scott's backup at the 4, but right now he looks a lot more comfortable at the 5. His defense is elite at the 5, but playing the 4 he tends to make more mental errors (overhelping, getting too tight to guys on the perimeter, not getting into rebounding position as well). I expect Diarra to learn the 4 spot eventually, but his lack of basketball experience shows when he plays it now.

Will this be the game we look back on should we squeak in the tournament? I would say no if we finish strong and are comfortably in. But if we squeak, this will be the one. One thing for sure, our trajectory right now is very good. Our guys are settling into their roles especially Cland in taking the ball up which is how it should be. We live and die by him. Great to see Harvey’s confidence I was hoping this would be his break out game, in which case we would have won by 10. My got says he will have one this season - hopefully sooner rather than later.

This team is being carried by the upperclassmen. Jarron Cumberland is a difference maker. Very High basketball iq. Tre has stepped up, team leader and kieth williams has been on the brink all season to having a very solid yr the guy is setting himself up for a very solid senior showing if he doesnt catch flame in this 2nd half and bolts. Bearcats have a pretty servicable short rotation thats starting to bring it. Might as well bank on these guys and continue the tournament streak. May see the postseason after all big win for the upperclassmen happy for them

Great to see Harvey getting a lot of run. We didn't back down and we didn't quit. Another game with very hot shooting to start the game for the other team and we took it on the chin and kept playing. Fantastic claw back!! Hell they had to go Mike Tyson on us they were getting so frustrated...LOL! Jareau may as well fake an injury next time at UC

hell the F yes!! back in the mix

Shout out to the crowd as well. Sounded great even over the TV so I'm sure it was wild in person

Excellent win. Scott deserves a ton of credit for putting in the effort on the boards. Keith took a while, but he played an excellent last 10 minutes. Vogt added good defense and some nice points down low as well (though his passing out of the double was terrible). Diarra played major minutes and gave great energy as part of the run that got us back in the game (he looks a lot more comfortable playing defense at the 5 spot than at the 4 spot). Zach Harvey also gave his biggest contribution of the season in our biggest game of the season.

We held Houston to 7 points over the last 11:31 of the game, including them having a drought of over 10 minutes without a made field goal. In fact, they had just one made field goal in the last 11:31, with the other 5 points coming off FT's.

Keith took a while bc he was out for a chunk of time during the middle of the first half. He was playing well early, then gone for a long stretch while jaevin and woods played. He played the whole second half and saved the game.

Ok I didn’t think we were coming back. But great comeback.

Man it’s hilarious on the AAC board with the excuses that are coming up with about the bite.

Best coaching I've seen from Brannen so far. He used MAW, Harvey and Diarra length to perfection. If Harvey starts playing with confidence that makes us best team in league. I'll like see small ball line up of Scott Jarron KW Jaevin Harvey.

Is there video of that happening.... asking for a friend

I haven't seen clear evidenceof the bite, but Diarra complained about it to the ref right there and then with a couple others players explaining it to the ref. The ref was looking right at Diarra about a foot away.

Then it was hilarious as they are reviewing it. You can read Sampsons lips when the ref tells him. It's something like "he did what?". Then he looks to his bench and says, "Did you bite someone".....Pure Gold!

Alot of video on twitter... There's one that shows dudes face on Dous leg and an instant reaction by dou.

There's also video of dudes face on Keith's leg.

He bit two dudes in one play.

I've seen both of those, but neither are evidence of a bite. Refs must have seen something different. I don't doubt he bit them b/c of Dou's reaction plus they probably saw a mark, but the videos out there don't show him biting.

Harvey is a smart kid. He never tries to do too much. He's okay right now not being a focal point on offense and he certainly played D like I haven't seen him before. What a game from him all things considered! His effort kept him on the court and it was good to see him realize that's his ticket to minutes. His 3 was huge as well.

Also love seeing Tre Scott working boards as usual. He had 11 and the next best was 4. 11 of 13 assists came from Tre and Jarron. They also had 4 of our 10 blocks with Vogt adding 5. Seniors filling stat sheets...Keith gave the crowd a big lift as well!

I don't believe he bit Keith at all. All logic tells you he bit Diarra though. You can see his face up against Diarra's leg and then quickly moves his head away as soon as Diarra flinches and starts pointing at his leg.

Plus the refs said they could see bite Mark's on his leg, I would imagine right where the video shows his face to have been.

Assume the NCAA interviews the refs? The seen bite marks are fairly important

Another thought from last night, brannen and his staff do a great job at shutting down the other teams best player. We seen it with Davis from smu, Garza from Iowa, Jarreau and Mills. Muck was always good at this also.

I really like how he just plays. Doesn't force shots cause he feels like it like you see a lot of freshman do, and even some of our upperclassmen.

He has worked hard and just played lock down D yesterday. He's a better athlete than Keith although he doesn't look as explosive because he's so smooth. Harvey can turn his hips and recover much quicker than Keith can.

Harvey earned his way onto the court the way most freshmen do, by playing defense and bringing energy. He still needs to cut down on the fouls a bit, but he looked much better than he has previously.

With Jarron taking over as PG, MAW struggling on defense lately, Jaevin struggling on defense and McNeal being an offensive non-factor, there is space open for Harvey to step into. Let's hope Harvey can keep it up, I love the big/athletic lineups.

The Jarron/Harvey/Williams/Scott/Diarra lineup that led the comeback is all players 6'5" or taller and tons of athleticism. Lacking in offense a bit, but with Jarron taking over lately it seems to have enough.
