Houston: Round 2: The Battle for Everything

Yeah, will be fun to see who steps up. Someone has to score.

3 of the last 5 years, our leading scorer hasn't averaged 14. This isn't Cronin's program, but I suspect next year is a Cronin-esque year of scoring, where 3 guys average double figures but no one eclipses 14ppg.

The only positive of Jarron leaving is hopefully I’ll hear the word alpha much less frequently

True but who is getting the ball at crunch time with the game on the line

Williams got most of the touches when Jarron fouled out....and made some VERY tough shots...Unless there is a clearly better alternative...he’s going to get his chance.

Seems the consensus is a 'play' vs straight ISO for Jarron. Which is what I would agree with. He seems to have 1 option, drive to the rim (or pull off and shoot a jumper if they really slag off which they never do).

tell that to the NBA, simple answer, you put the ball in your best players hand for a last second play. He doesn’t have to be the guy to shoot it, but he’s the guy you want making that choice. That doesn’t mean you can’t run a play or a screen off the ball to see if someone else can get an open look, but if you have a dominate guy like Jarron, that play shouldn’t start anywhere else

This comment got me thinking about minutes, and what sort of legs we could expect come AAC tourney and hopefully NCAA. Especially since Brennan self prides on getting better through the year and playing your best ball in March.

This year Jarron is averaging .3 less MPG than last year, which is sort of amazing given the 7 OTs.

Tre averages roughly 33 MPG, which is a ton.

But I'm encouraged that like most teams, we run 6 deep on guys who eat up majority of minutes, but 7-9 we have Harvey, Mcneal and Diarra, then have Davenport getting minutes at a 10th slot.

I have hopes we don't look bogged down come crunch time.

I think Tre is in really good shape though, he’s done a lot of work since becoming a Bearcat to get to where he is now. I don’t see him slowing down because of the minutes he’s played

i agree with all of this completely. Jarron does need to make the right decision, but I think the options are there. He just has to choose the right one.

But he also probably feels like theres no way somebody can stop him from getting to the rim without fouling him. When the refs are inconsistent with the whistle, it makes his decision making tougher.

And that’s a big part of the issue here. While not every time, Jarron should have gotten the whistle a fair amount on some of these plays and just doesn’t. Hard to blame the player for making a play and the refs just ignoring it because Jarron is so tough

If maw isn’t our best player next year, probably Keith, maw will definitely be top 3. No other options. Unless a freshman steps up, which is rare

If I'm writing a list for players already here MAW probably comes in 4th.

I don't expect a freshman to be our best player, but its possible one of them is better than MAW next year.

MAW has really struggled being an off guard so I wonder how him and Saunders will fit together.

I think Harvey is the better candidate to make a big jump from freshman to sophomore.

I agree with Harvey, my point is he’s at least in the conversation. He’s one of 3 returning starters. I expect both to improve a lot. They have a year under their belt and know what to expect. Both of their shots already look better. Another 8 months of working and they should improve even more.

what would be really nice if a couple freshman blew up out of nowhere like Houston has had this year.

Caleb Mills was ranked 150 Sasser was 357.

Wouldn't know it by watching them.

I think Gabe size and shot making will translate. I could see him with a couple big games. I could also see Eason step right in and be able to rebound and defend. Saunders and mason, I’m unsure. Getting them in here early would really help.
