Im still pissed off about the the question they asked Gary.

Like sometimes I wish Gary wasn't so nice. I know I'd have a hard time trying to be.

But in the long run, much better for Gary for laugh it off.

Yeah I'm still fuming as well. The more time passes, the worse it looks. I wouldn't let the media talk to my players anymore if I was the coach and I found out about that. No joke.

But yeah Gary is a class act through and through. He's a better man than me, I can tell you that.

They were making tough jumpers. You can't do much about that really. SMU was able to get to the rack on us last year. It's hard to survive on contested jumpers. Hell...we had OPEN jumpers the entire first half against SMU the other night and we missed more than we made.

I don’t recall them taking a bunch of contested jumpers.

But I also don’t consider a late closeut a contested jumper since you never disrupted the shooters routine.

I thought we rotated late and just left corner shooters open.

I just re-watched the first half. They didn't make a single corner 3 in the first half. They probably made 6-8 contested jumpers.

We stopped turning it over and they stopped making jumpers in the second half and the last few minutes of the first half.

No doubt they were up 18 on us at home, but I don't know if Houston can replicate hitting every long jumper in the first half like they did. They do need this game badly, but as Clark said, so do we. Going to be a great game. Wouldn't surprise me to see Cincinnati step up in a big way. We can't afford any losses before the tournament. Hell I seen if we don't sweep whichita state we would drop a seed line. Crazy. UC understands that they are not a blue blood and can't afford to drop a game like some other teams. Let's just get in, win and leave. If and we beat Houston, that all but locks up our regular season title and one seed in conference tournament, not to mention at worse a two seed in the big tournament. Im guessing 70 to 62, in favor of the good guys. Let's go Bearcats.....

If we only lose @wichita state and still win the tournament we will still get a 2 seed.

I was there. They did not have a bunch of wide-open threes. They did have a couple where we were a step slow to try to contest it, but they also made some amazing shots under pressure. We just turned the ball over and gave them way too many chances and they know how to shoot the ball

These next 2 games will give the true measure of this team. The last 2 don't count much - stomping UCF without Tacko or SMU without half their team means little. Houston there & Wichita anywhere will tell us if the Cats are ready for a March run.

These guys are no joke! I hope we can get up early like they did (I would settle for 5-8 points but 18 would be nice...lol). We seem to get better as the games go on. They are well rounded with shooters, play makers, and capable bigs. We are the better team but on the road this may be close to a pickem game TBH.

I feel very comfortable with Gary and Jake leading the team on the road...they are all business all the time. Cumberland is similar and doesn't get caught up in the crowd emotions. We need these guys to settle us down. Kyle is making better decisions recently. We have some options at PG to change dynamics if we need to.

Bring the intensity and focus. Play our typical ELITE D. Get after all rebounds and loose balls. Take care of the ball. We win!!
Curious - that have talent. does he get under the radar guys or were these guys local? top 100?

Right away, I go back and watch the very first 3 of the game (Corey Davis Jr) at 17:44 is an late contested 3, there was no one around him when he started his shooting motion, Jarron closed late. Thats not good defense.

9:50 mark, Armoni Brooks creates his own shot, gets Gary to bite and then steps back to create space and splash. Thats not a contested jumper, thats creating space to have an own look

9:02 Corey Davis JR, moves around the perimeter without the ball and Nas has to cover, Corey was left unattended and brooks tried to chase, but brooks was 2 feet away and flat footed when Davis took the jumper, Thats not a good contest of a jumpshot. If I get that space at the rec center, its going in.

7:19 I would consider this one a contested jumpshot. Cane didnt bite on the dribble drive from Galen Robinson and contested the shot. But Davis was in a shooters motion and has a quick release. The best contest on him, is to face guard him and keep him from catching

3:09 Ill call this uncontested as well, because a late close out has little impact unless you block the shot, THis was on Trevor Moore, he lost his man for split second, Brooks went to the Corner and nailed a 3

17:29 in 2H Gray nails a contested Kyle Washington. Thats the 2nd Contested 3 i've seen all night.

10:36 in 2h.. Again, Late closeout does not mean its a contested Jumper, Cane let Davis find his spot the moment he passed the ball and then cane helped, it created space for the pass to Davis and Splash. Thats not a contested jumper, Zero disruption unless its a shot block.

7:26 This is partially contested but Cane bit on being a help defender on the baseline, leaving a pure shooter with a clear look at the basket. The perfect pass in his shooters pocket and splash. Cane recovered, but again way too late. Also Brooks is 6'3 with a 6'10 wing span, Cane's late contest is not blocking that shot. IF Cane stays home, trusts his bigs to protect the paint and stays with Armoni, he might have forced a TO.

3:26 2H Not much Jarron could do, a perfect screen was set, Brooks used it to create space and again clear look at the basket. Jarron's contest came well after he was into his shooting motion.

What i've learning from breaking down the film: Houston's shooters all have quick triggers, they don't need a ton of space, and they run good screens to get open your shooters. Its very much like playing Xavier. We cannot play help defense. We need to good one on one defenders.

The thing that has me concerned is we really got the best of the whistle in our gym. They had 24 fouls called on them to our 15. We fouled two of their bigs out. One with a bunch of time left on the clock. Two of their guys hurt us from 3. As usual we held Gray down. TO's were about even. We out rebounded them. Our Big 4 all played well. Brooks was 3 for 3 in the game.

I think the strategy was to hack us with their bigs. Cronin eluded to it post game. I mean they had one guy foul out a minute into the second half. It will be interesting to see if they try it again. They did not want to see easy buckets in the paint.

I think Sampson will manage that situation a little better this time around. We just gotta play our game...bring the heat and take care of the ball.

Their big guys foul a lot. They are almost always in foul trouble.

I was at the game and was stunned he let them pick up his 5th so early without subbing for him. He definitely used his 10 fouls from his bigs

Sampson will learn from that game. He isn't a bad coach.

I am not saying they didn't get a good look at the basket. I am saying it's hard to rely on step back jumpers or jumpers on the move when there is someone close enough to get a hand in your face. They are capable of hitting some but in contrast we usually are shooting set shots or higher % looks. If we can keep them from getting wide open set shots I like our chances. Shooting mid range and long range stuff on the move is what we want them to do.
