I just re-watched the first half. They didn't make a single corner 3 in the first half. They probably made 6-8 contested jumpers.
We stopped turning it over and they stopped making jumpers in the second half and the last few minutes of the first half.
Right away, I go back and watch the very first 3 of the game (Corey Davis Jr) at
17:44 is an late contested 3, there was no one around him when he started his shooting motion, Jarron closed late. Thats not good defense.
9:50 mark, Armoni Brooks creates his own shot, gets Gary to bite and then steps back to create space and splash. Thats not a contested jumper, thats creating space to have an own look
9:02 Corey Davis JR, moves around the perimeter without the ball and Nas has to cover, Corey was left unattended and brooks tried to chase, but brooks was 2 feet away and flat footed when Davis took the jumper, Thats not a good contest of a jumpshot. If I get that space at the rec center, its going in.
7:19 I would consider this one a contested jumpshot. Cane didnt bite on the dribble drive from Galen Robinson and contested the shot. But Davis was in a shooters motion and has a quick release. The best contest on him, is to face guard him and keep him from catching
3:09 Ill call this uncontested as well, because a late close out has little impact unless you block the shot, THis was on Trevor Moore, he lost his man for split second, Brooks went to the
Corner and nailed a 3
17:29 in 2H Gray nails a contested Kyle Washington. Thats the 2nd Contested 3 i've seen all night.
10:36 in 2h.. Again, Late closeout does not mean its a contested Jumper, Cane let Davis find his spot the moment he passed the ball and then cane helped, it created space for the pass to Davis and Splash. Thats not a contested jumper, Zero disruption unless its a shot block.
7:26 This is partially contested but Cane bit on being a help defender on the baseline, leaving a pure shooter with a clear look at the basket. The perfect pass in his shooters pocket and splash. Cane recovered, but again way too late. Also Brooks is 6'3 with a 6'10 wing span, Cane's late contest is not blocking that shot. IF Cane stays home, trusts his bigs to protect the paint and stays with Armoni, he might have forced a TO.
3:26 2H Not much Jarron could do, a perfect screen was set, Brooks used it to create space and again clear look at the basket. Jarron's contest came well after he was into his shooting motion.
What i've learning from breaking down the film: Houston's shooters all have quick triggers, they don't need a ton of space, and they run good screens to get open your shooters. Its very much like playing Xavier. We cannot play help defense. We need to good one on one defenders.
