Iowa is going to damn near get their average.

All Xmas break needs to be is defense.

It’s the thing that will kill us all year if we don’t figure it out

hold that team to just under 1 ppp and you better win that game. defense was not the reason we lost. we managed to win the turnover battle by 17 and lose because we can't score the basketball.

11-40 from Jarron, Scott, and Keith. That will never do it.

Can we officially it the “Vogt is the worst defending in the world” thing to bed. He’s went against some of the best big men in the country and held his own. Is he great? No, but he isn’t as bad as some seem to think.

I think he has improved.
But just like Wesson, we junked up the defense to stop one guy because we couldn’t trust our big to do it one on one.

Soo.. then it frees up Iowa to get all of its other guys open.

Again, looking at raw numbers Is silly. We abandoned all
Other defensive principles so we could stop Garza. They made us pay.

I say that, giving much credit to Vogts improvement. But the numbers are the numbers and Brannen knows he can’t trust him one on one so throws out a junk defense.

It’s much deeper than just Garza’s scoring line

Yup, I was going to write this same thing. It was also just one game, Vogt was not terrible, but he wasn't good.

Iowa got the ball inside, forced the defense to collapse and then kicked it out for open threes. Sure Garza didn't score a lot, but the need for us to collapse to protect the paint created all sorts of openings that Iowa took advantage of.

When playing any good team or player, you have to pick your poison. Can’t stop everyone. Once again, never said he was great but to suggest you can’t play him at all is idiotic.

We are 11 games in now. Not saying he’s good, he can’t move, but he also isn’t the worst, like you claim.

When have I claimed he is "the worst" (and the worst what?). I've said he is the worst defensive player on the team, but I don't see how that's controversial. The only player you could really argue is worse defensively is Jaevin.

Saying he shouldn't play at all is a little extreme. But I think it's perfectly reasonable to argue that he should be used situationally or only in certain matchups.

Diarra has been plus 6-8 in the last two games he has gotten minutes (Xavier, Iowa). He should be in there for defense/rebounding when Vogt isn't scoring on offense. Vogt had 2 points and 2/3 rebounds in the second half. He did the majority of his damage in the 6-7 minutes of the first half that Garza was on the bench.

But you could at least try throwing some different looks at them. Brannen doesn't seem to adjust the defense much, besides the plan of just abandoning all other defensive principles to help our center.

The plan for beating UC's defense has been seen many times at this point. Either pull Vogt away from the basket and drive or force us to double on the interior to help Vogt and kick it out. Not every team is going to have the personnel to manage that, but when they do, we don't seem to have any answers.

The obvious answer is to let Diarra play some minutes, even if it's just for 5 minutes per half. Taking the other teams offense out of their rhythm can have a lasting impact even after Diarra goes out and Vogt comes back in.

The reason we lost is simple. The three main guys went 11-40 from the field. KW had a bad game, Trevon went back to his typical self, and Jarron continues the biggest drop off of a player that I can ever remember. This team will not do well without those three. They had been playing better of late because KW has been playing better, but tonight all three were below average.

Not surprising to see the Vogt/Brannen haters come out of the woods after that game. But defense was not the reason they lost.

There is no "reason we lost", it's a combination of things. The defense wasn't great by any means, but yes the offense was worse. But the offense created open looks, we just didn't make them.

Trevon missed shots he can and should make, there's not a lot that can be done about that. KW missed some makeable shots as well and also had only 3 rebounds. McNeal needs to learn not to shoot from 3 unless there really is no other choice (under 5 seconds on the shot clock).

Iowa played smarter than Tennessee on both sides. We only have three guys on our team who are threats to shoot from three, cover those three and dare the other guys (especially McNeal) to shoot. Tennessee left the Cumberland's open for three a number of times and got burned, Iowa left McNeal wide open and it worked.

On offense, Iowa took advantage of our bad defenders (Jaevin, Vogt, Sorolla). Iowa doesn't have elite athletes, but they played smart and took advantage of matchups. When you have guys on the floor who have huge holes in their games, it's an open invitation to smart teams/coaches.

We need to play guys with holes in their games (Jaevin, Vogt, Sorolla on defense, McNeal, Diarra on offense) but Brannen could make more of an effort to vary players and play to matchups (and tell McNeal he isn't allowed to shoot threes).

First game I played attention to skyblade and Justin concerns about vogt D. Iowa worked to remove vogt from paint every time and it worked for most part to beat us. Need find him a comfort zone around paint. Diarra needs minutes also.

Vogt can’t move, don’t think that’s a secret. If he has to, it’s not going to go well. My thing is, he provides enough positives to Counter some of the negatives. If we are counting on Vogt as our main piece, offensively or defensively, we probably aren’t very good.

Not sure watching the time he's going against one of the best big men in the country is the fairest barometer lol That said, I think we can all agree Vogt is a below average defender. But I think he's big enough to do okay in AAC level of play and provides a lot more on the offensive end. I rewatched all scoring plays of the Tennessee game and he wasn't responsible for giving up more than maybe 6 points.

Of course he's more than capable, I don't even blame him for being picked on defensively. I believe he's smart enough to adjust to whatever zone we create for him and that should be our plan going forward. Can't continue to get beat by same strategy over and over again.

Its not the points he gives up that show in metrics we're talking about. Every team almost every play has there big man drift to 3pt line to clear the paint of a big. Iowa game plan was to get our C away from basket. That was reason why their all American didn't dominate, game plan was for their wings to do damage against us in paint.
