This is awesome news! Really excited to see Sk this year. He really seems to realize his weaknesses and we all know how hard he works. He is going to be in straight beast mode.

I agree, I just hope this year doesn't become the Sean Kilpatrick show and other players not only step up, but don't just defer to him. He can be easy to shut down if we have no one else the defense fears. And that is not meant to knock SK's game it just means that he will see a constant double team if we allow defenses to do that. I also hope we have a point guard that can get him the ball while he is making his cuts instead of at the top of the key where he just has to dribble and pass back around or have to create his own shot.

I totally agree. This was our problem last year with the "the 3 amigos". Everyone else watched and I feel none of the other guards last year stepped up. Good news to that for this year, they will be forced to step up because one guy can not do it all.

Sean Kilpatrick is just a kid from Yonkers, N.Y., who has never been outside the United States.

After making the 12-man final roster for the USA World University Games Team, he will finally head overseas on Monday.

To Kazan, Russia for the big event.

“This is my first time [overseas],” the 6-foot-4 senior guard from Cincinnati told SNY.tv after making the roster.

“I’d be able to say that I made my mom and my dad proud by representing my country by doing something that I enjoy doing. I’m just happy to be here.”

Kilpatrick is the fourth Cincinnati player ever to play for the World Games team, joining Eric Hicks (2005), Kenyon Martin (1999) and Pete Mickeal (1999).

Kilpatrick made the cut after nearly 30 players tried out for a team coached by Davidson’s Bob McKillop with Michigan’s John Beilein and South Carolina’s Frank Martin as assistants.

“This is a great opportunity to learn from the coaching staff, which is tremendous,” Bearcats coach Mick Cronin told SNY.tv.

“It’s also a chance to improve as a player and represent our country. He is one of the best players in America and definitely the best teammate in college basketball. I’m elated for him.”

During tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colo., the 23-year-old Kilpatrick matched up on guys like New Mexico’s Kendall Williams, Notre Dame’s Jerian Grant and and Creighton’s Doug McDermott, the SNY Big East Preseason Player of the Year.

“This is something that I encourage everybody to work to get because you’re playing against the best competition,” he said.

McDermott helped oust Kilpatrick and Cincinnati from the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, but the two have developed a bond.

“I call him the new and improved Dirk Nowitzki,” Kilpatrick said of the 6-8 McDermott. “You don’t really see him catch a lot of dunks but he racks up points.”

McDermott and Creighton enter the Big East Conference just as Kilpatrick and Cincinnati are leaving for the American Athletic Conference.

“He’s gonna be real good especially due to the fact that he has the size with him,” Kilpatrick said. “There’e not a lot of guys with that type of size and that can shoot the way he can.”

The two have been getting in some extra workout sessions together.

“I mean, me and him have been having workout sessions before practice,” he said of McDermott. “He matches my intensity in this. If he can do that then I can say he’s a tough player.”

As for next season with the Bearcats, they lose senior guards Cashmere Wright and JaQuon Parker and big man Cheikh Mbodj, but bring in a number of young guards as well as 6-10 New York City native Jermaine Lawrence.

“We lost a couple guys that [were] big but we also gained guys that are hungry and are going to come out and play hard,” Kilpatrick said. “Shaq Thomas is gonna be great. Justin Jackson and Titus Rubles, they’re as athletic as anyone in the county.”

Kilpatrick said he hasn’t focused too much on the new league, but knows the Bearcats will face defending NCAA champion Louisville as well as UConn and Memphis.

“If you’re able to compete with teams like that and get wins, that means the most,” he said.

For now, Kilpatrick is about to leave the U.S. — and his soon-to-be-3-year-old-daughter, Bailey — for the first time in his life, but he says he isn’t nervous at all.

“No, I’m confident because I have great teammates,” he said. “When you’re playing against other countries with the best players in the country you feel comfortable because you know they are going to battle with you.”

Proud for him and proud for the program. This is good for SK and will make him a better player. I like that Beilein is coaching him. Anything positive that keeps Cincinnati in the public view is good indeed.

Really? This is your response to SK making team USA? Unbelievable.

As a UC bearcat Fan? Absolutely... An SK injury playing in some overseas nonsense would be devastating.

O, I mean... uhhh.. Great opportunity for SK, and could have a positive impact on recruiting.

So if he wasn't playing in this, he would be playing in the rucker park league or something out in New York. Injuries are a possibility shooting around in the gym. Shit happens. I would much rather have SK playing in this tournament than sitting in a padded box just to make sure he doesn't get hurt. Kenyon, Eric Hicks, and one other player for UC has played in this recently. None of them got hurt and they had great senior seasons.

Sk would be playing somewhere anyway. To improve you have to play. Playing aginst good talent is a good thing. If your working hard in the off season Everybody has a chance to get injured.

I understand where you are coming from. But you have to think, "Does the good outweigh the bad?" My answer, yes. SK needs to play with top talent so that he learns he isn't good enough to just sit behind the 3 point line and jack up 3s. He needs to watch highlights of his redshirt freshman year, where he constantly took the ball to the hoop. If he can find the right mixture of driving to the hoop and shooting some 3s, he will be very good. While he can be a good 3 point shooter, that alone isn't enough for him to be successful. He needs to find high percentage shots, he used to be so good at converting in traffic. If playing with high level competition shows him how to find the balance, then it was definitely worth the risk. Add the cool experience for SK and the positive impact on the program/recruiting, there is no question.

haha, best post in a long time!

i agree and for the ppl who mention playing elsewhere, do you really belive those games are real and players are going all out? not even close. the world games? yea, players are going at it.

100 times greater are sk chances at getting hurt at the world games then at summer league.

You can't miss opportunities to better yourself and establish yourself as a great player by living in fear. Play hard and prosper SK.

Injuries happen more when someone is not going all out. Think of all the injuries that happen when someone is going out of bounds in football and lets up not expecting the hit.

I would be more worried about playing a glorified pickup game in a summer league than an organized basketball event like the WUG.

Jason your debating a point with someone who doesn't have a clue. Anyone thing SK making WUG squad is anything but a good thing for program and player isn't worth debating.

USA head coach Bob McKillop (Davidson College) on pulling away in the second half against UNICS (Pro Russian Club):

"I think the level of intensity increased dramatically when Sean Kilpatrick went into the game and Sean got pressure on the point guard, then that started to ripple down to the rest of their team. His ability to pressure the point guard didn’t necessarily get steals, but it made their first pass difficult and that carried into the rest of their possession."

7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Not a bad start. Way to represent Bearcat Nation Killa!
