Kilpatrick makes national team

USA head coach Bob McKillop (Davidson College) on pulling away in the second half against UNICS (Pro Russian Club):

"I think the level of intensity increased dramatically when Sean Kilpatrick went into the game and Sean got pressure on the point guard, then that started to ripple down to the rest of their team. His ability to pressure the point guard didn’t necessarily get steals, but it made their first pass difficult and that carried into the rest of their possession."

Bearcat defense. Most players never learn to play defense like Bearcat players do. It's just at another level.

Can't wait to see how they do against teams that actually know how to play basketball (Canada, Russia, Australia, Lithuania).

hahaha I was thinking the same thing. I watched the replay on the Sunday against the arab team and I think the DSL was more entertaining.

Well SK had a poor offensive game. he has played 18 minutes. 0-4 from 3. 0-1 from 2. and 1/2 from the charity stripe.

2 Rebounds.

Two poor outings in a row. To be honest, SK kind of worries me. His shooting percentage has gone down each year he has played.

10-11 overall .437 from 3 - .377
11-12 overall .428 from 3 - .376
12-13 overall .398 from 3 - .307

Now admittedly, the 2nd year was statistically a tiny drop, almost a wash, but you would hope for improvement, not status quo or a deterioration. His 3rd year was a huge drop. if we're depending on frosh to take the load off our seniors, we might be in a world of hurt.

I am not looking much into these games bc the competition has not been good but....I still have yet to see SK drive to the hoop or create off his dribble. I have seen him float to the corner and stay behind the 3 pt line quite well. When his shot is not falling he has yet to develop a strong attack. That has been something that has lacked in his game and something Cronin always mentions but yet we see no changes.

You have to take into consideration the number of shots as well. He has been more of a leader each year and tries to create or even forces shots he wouldn't have earlier in his career, this can have a negative impact on the percentages. Not saying it makes it ok or good, just saying need to consider all factors.

Sean will look much like the second half of last season if he doesn't attack the basket some and make people have to back off him a bit. He needs to attack and at least get to the line. He relies entirely too much on his outside shot which is streaky. He is a scorer not a shooter. I am hoping Beilein can give SK some pointers on getting open and help him tweak his game.

I have never seen such a great shooter be such a bad shooter.

SK needs to make 1, once he does hes normally fine... However sometimes he throws up some awwwwful bricks in order to make that first one.

I think alot of SK's problem is he handles the ball too much to create his shot which forces him to throw up bad shots or forced shots. Alot of that I attribute to not having a pg that can create offense for him. He's really only been a "deadly" scorer when someone kicks out to him for an open 3. To his credit he does use his body well to get a shot off when he does get inside, but when he puts the ball on the floor to create a shot he's easy to defend in my opinion. He's not quick enough to blow past people and when we fall into a slow, half-court offense defenses can defend that. And while he's still an above-average scorer he's by no means a stud in those scenarios. I just don't think he's a driver in the college game where the defense can collapse on him. I want to see him get the ball within the ten to fifteen foot range where he can take one dribble towards the hoop and/or use his strength (which he does have) to draw a foul or even put up a midrange shot. I think he would be a force if we had a pg that could make this happen. Most of the time he gets the ball it's from outside the perimeter and he's 20+ feet from the rim. That leads to him dribbling into trouble or forcing up a bad outside shot. I guess my point is more he's not good enough to drive 20 feet to hoop where defenses have so much time to collapse in on him. I do agree that sometimes players need to just put their head down and drive so they can get to the line. And SK definitely fits this category. Parker was the only one who did this in recent memory for us. Logan was a master at it, but he had much friendlier refs than we've had the last few years.

Another poor performance today with only 3 points. Someone else on another board posted SK has taken the most shots and has the 3rd worst shooting percentage on the team

.324 overall and .292 from 3

Its maddening to watch SK in these games because all he does is run down the floor and stand in the corner behind the 3 pt line. He literally does that 90% of every offensive possession he is a part of.

I hate bashing him because I want him to be Great, but thats basically what he does here too

He scored 10 points yesterday, not a bad performance.

on 3-9 from shooting. Ive only been able to watch one game so i dont know how well hes actually been performing im just going by shooting percentages, which sometimes doesnt tell the whole story I know. But like I said, I just want and hope for him to be great. This isnt even half the competition of his goal which is the NBA, so im just hoping for better shot attempts and to capitalize on his open looks

I just want to reiterate that I love SK so noone takes my posts the wrong way

I have watch 3 University Games and all 3 games, he just stands in the corner. I know its a new team etc but it would be nice to see him contribute a little bit more and actually be involved. I mean, he doesn't even take more than 2 dribbles before passing it off, and that is if he even touches the ball.

It's frustrating because I think we all know he is better than that. This was suppose to be a good opportunity for him to get better and improve and work with different proven coaches. I haven't seen any benefits yet.

Sean Kilpatrick has become a very good defender, unfortunately he always be a volume shooter. I think we should expect him to average around 18-19 points on ~40% shooting from the field and ~32% from three.

The blame for this team goes to the coaches. They decided to play a 4 out 1 in offense but didn't have any motion with it. Watch the game when SK is in or out, it's the same thing. This team was designed around the 3 point shot, which is fine in international basketball, but they barely had anyone to play defense. It was so frustrating watching the games and seeing a group of guys on the floor playing good defense only to see them get replaced and watch the other team go on a 16-3 run. The Australia game was a microcosm of this. From up 10 to down 11 in a blink of an eye.

The PGs were maddening as well. They would dribble at the top of the key for about 15 second, get the clock down to 3 and jack up a shot with no chance to go in and no offensive rebounding. If I was the coach, the second that happened, that player would be sitting on the pine until he figured out why.
