Major Flaws at UC

I have to completely disagree with the original post and all the people commenting on how bad Clifton is. There is absolutely no reason to move games to the dump on the river called US Bank Arena. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Clifton or it being unsafe! Honestly, if you are claiming that I question if you have ever been there or to any other urban campus. I park for free on the streets behind short vine and walk one or two blocks through the fb practice fields and am there in less than 10 min! Maybe if you people who are complaining about parking did some research or actually explore and get out of your suburban bubble you would find there are ton of options. Secondly, there are only 4000 people coming to games so I hardly think you should be complaining about parking.
Your next comment about 5/3 being a dump....well it is not the most attractive place but the seating isn't all that bad! Yes, it does need renovated or we need a new arena but that WILL NOT happen anytime soon and that is just the fact. The upper level first 15 or so rows are great seats actually and gives a great view of the game. The end seats are not the greatest but it is still a fun area to watch BASKETBALL, that is the reason why you come right?
Overall, the original post sounds like a great post full of excuses and sums up UC fans in general. Majority of these "fans" only complain complain complain. Yes, I complain about the arena and the OOC just like the others too but that doesn't stop me from going to the games and watching my team! I am a basketball fan and enjoy watching the team play because I can't change things like OOC and the way 5/3 is. Sounds like too me there are too many hypocrites who need to get over themselves. You either are a fan or you are not. Does anyone look at the positive things about UC basketball and/or the development of Clifton. Honestly, the people who complain here the most are a huge part of the problems.

Parking sucks!

I thought the loss to Presbyterian was really embarrassing, but the UC fan base is what truly is embarrassing. There is no support. According to a lot of the "fans" out there, they are worthy of a front row seat and their own personal parking space right in front of the stadium and the ability to control the teams we schedule, then they would be happy. Get over yourselves people and come to terms with realization.

You say that and yet the students wont support the program. If they'd fill their seats attendance would improve 2,000-3,000 a game. That's the embarrasment.

T Boone Pickens is not going to donate $150 million to UC to build a new arena.

UC still has about $160 million to go to finish off the $1 billion capital campaign drive, there can be no other fundraising until this is complete.

UC has a no loan policy on facilities, the money to pay for a new facility must be "in the bank" before construction on any new facility can be built.

I find nothing wrong with the Shoe as is.

It is football season, 6,000 students show up for every home football game, no more than 500 are attending basketball games and I believe they get in for free. Football is the most popular sport in America. Basketball takes a back seat to football.

You realize most basketball games aren't played on football game days right?

Clifton is not that bad is a UC Student or alumni thing to say. People who do not know Clifton do not feel good about parking in Clifton and then walking to the Shoe.

I talk to many co-workers who are a middle aged and they all say they do not want to park and walk to the games. Their wives are unwilling to walk the streets of Clifton.

Save any comments about it not being true because perception is reality.

That has to be one of the lamest excuses to date. Its not like you are walking through projects with gunmen toting every corner. We are talking one block, and that is if you choose to not park on campus when there are plenty of people around and police. So what is their excuse to park on campus in a parking garage for $10? Is the campus too beautiful to look at and they don't appreciate good architecture? What a joke. Its people like that is why UC fan base is a joke, they will find ANYTHING to complain about.

The embarrassment is how UC is going about getting students and fans to the game. Ultimately they are in charge of getting people to games. Can someone tell me what advertisement you've seen or heard for these games? What are they doing to get students to the games?

If you want to say that you don't mind the schedule because it allows the young players to work themselves in, fine. But you can't have it both ways. If you are okay with the schedule than stop complaining about attendance. If you want attendance to improve, fill out a schedule against teams that people care about....and MARKET it.

The Bearcats need a couple of strong years to get their season ticket base up; that will have a ripple effect on the availability of seats. Those who wait for the "good" games to buy a seat will be out of luck and will have to settle for the lesser games.
People park in the garages because they feel safe; have had a couple of unpleasant episodes after UC games on campus, while it didn't bother me, scared my wife out of ever coming down to UC at night.

You realize most basketball games aren't played on football game days right?

You realize that people do not have as many discretionary dollars as they used to, after spending money on UC football and Bengals tickets they have no money left to spend on basketball tickets. 6,000 students show up for every UC football game, maybe 500 show up for basketball. People like football a lot more than they like basketball.

Students get free tickets Ralph.

Addressed the advertising in earlier post....I agree!

Many are also afraid to walk the streets of downtown Cincinnati after dark. So moving the games to US Bank would not be a good idea either.

Why did you all of a sudden chance who you were talking about? Lets stick to the students, the original topic YOU brought up.

Students get in to basketball games FOR FREE but they don't go to games because its football season? What UC football game was the same time as the Basketball game?

People complaining about the safety of the UC Campus has obviously not been down there in a while and are simply using it as an excuse. In the late 90s the campus was way worse than it is now and all the games were sold out then. There are many factors leading to poor attendance, and many are justified, the idea of walking around Clifton is not one of those IMO.

Good point.

No one wants to see a defensive battle against these weak opponents. Not even if tickets are free. Mick's style is to play good defense and slow up at the offensive end. Although it is effective in winning, it is boring basketball. Very little excitement. Not much break away dunks or fast paced basketball.

When students don't show, it is an even worse atmosphere

I don't believe Mick wants to play that way. We don't have the players to win differently. Mick commented after the game that "We have to know who we are. 71 points is a lot for us and we need to keep teams in the 40s and 50s to win." There is not a scorer on this team, outside of SK that can get you 15-20 a night on a regular basis. Yancy will put up those numbers but a lot of his points will be off put backs and making his own move from 15 feet out. When UC was high flying in the late 90s and early 2000s, you had several guards/wings that could get to the rim consistently and create easy buckets for themselves and teammates. Until UC can do that consistently, points will be hard to come by. I believe Shaq Thomas can be that guy but we won't know until next year. SK can score in a hurry but he could score more if a guard could drive, draw the defense, and kick. Mick's strategy is based on who he has on this team. Most coaches get praised for adjusting their coaching style to the players on the team. For some reason, Mick gets crushed. Mick knows how this team needs to win and after that loss, I think the team realizes it too. I don't care how "fun" it is to watch the game as long as they win. I always feel better after a win, no matter how ugly, than a pretty loss. Just win baby!

I don't agree with who you say he has on this team but Im not debating that, I'm just saying that defense wins championships and offense sells tickets. Mick is a defensive first guy

Mick has said "we are who we are". In other words we have to win with defense because we aren't going to blow people out. I have no problem with being defensive minded, I just want the offense to be efficient. Know your role, know how to execute the offense, and make smart passes. Don't think...play!

Students do not go to basketball games because they like football a whole lot more than basketball, as does the USA in general. Also football games are generally played on Saturday vs a school night for basketball. Scheduling a basketball game at 4pm on a Saturday, Presbyterian, when most of the students were probably hanging out in bars watching the UC Rutgers football game and then after the disappointing loss drowning their sorrows, was not a good idea. Alabama State, Sunday at 7pm after the Bengals Steelers game. Probably not too many like the Ralph who left PBS and went directly to the Shoe for the game.
