Memphis

Just happy right now that Mikey was effective against a good D with heavy help and blocking ability. He used his body well to shield against a couple blocks. When going against Memphis you need to use the rim as an asset or use the extra pass. The reverse layin becomes important as does the dropoff pass. Memphis made a lot of drop off passes which ended in highlight dunks.

Do believe 4 games in 8 days was an issue but
I don’t think we have a good defensive player on
the team.
Saunders- has shown some glimpses of what
CJB has elucidated. Keep growin’ youngin’.
Williams - so disappointed in him. Is there a more
enigmatic player ? Awesome one minute, and
absolutely horrible the next.
Eason - don’t know his demeanor but to me, he
looks disengaged. Imo, don’t think he’ll be back.
Hope he is back & works hard cause I think he
can be pretty good.
JD- has had a very good year. Needs some time
at Black Sheep fitness tho for strength. Not sure
of potential to enhance fast twitch however.
Madden- has shown more than I expected.
Keep growin’ as well.
Diarra / Vogt- I’m ready to move on tho I realize
both coulda benefit from off season prolly more
than others.

I would agree about our defenders. Not really any lock down guys. Which is why it's so important to have the mobile shot blocker. It should not be difficult to land a player (or two) who can defend and rebound at the 5...make bunnies and catch lobs. Prefer one is in HS though. I am ready for Dou and Vogt to move on so we can focus on future. Get guys who fit the system and can learn the system.

The problem is we need a lock down guy on the perimeter...and we also need a play maker. LOL! So whoever the hell we get has to be all around awesome on the wing!

I think that has to be the push for MAW... He's long. Quick. Add a little more strength.. becoming lockdown defender has got to be his primary role on the squad.

If we are able to land an athletic 5 who can defend and rebound I think that will improve everyone's defense. Chris Vogt kills this team. Weak hands and lack of coordination just leaves a hole in the back of this defense.

Really nice to see Mikey play like that. He not only showed the speed but he showed some legit finishing ability. Not sure how consistent the shot will be but give him credit....it's improving.

I like the pieces of this team but they need an athletic 5 and an alpha scorer on the wing on the transfer market. A more efficient Keith Williams. If you get that I truly think we could make the tournament next year. Get it done this off season.

I think making the tourney solely depends on how quickly John gets the team to gel. We can’t afford to blow a another non conference and try to make it up in this busted ass league.

Let’s call Nysier Brooks and see if he wants a 6th year of college.

I just think landing and filling all the holes we need we to fill this late in the process will be a tough task.

I will be frustrated if John brings in another plodding white guy at center. If it’s not clear by now that it doesn’t work at this level then it will be never clear.

Tari has skills to be a stretch 4.

So just work on an athletic shot blocker. I don’t care if he ever scores.

I dont know if it was Micks system, or the year off hurt him, but Brooks has been terrible at Miami. 3.8 block % this year, hell even Vogt is 5.3.

Its just not easy to plug 5's in. They appear to need the perfect fit. Brooks ain't it in this system.

Brooks wasn’t good for mick. Brooks isn’t that good period.

5a are hard to find. All the ones we get are going to have flaws. Just like with mick. You have to just take chances and hope you hit on one

Rim protection isn’t just blocking shots though.

Teams shot 45% from 2 in micks system with Tre and Nysier manning the middle.

Tari is your Tre. Now just need your Brooks.

6’11 or 6’10 who can catch lobs, and protect the paint.

I would take a guy like Eliel right now at the 5.

If we got someone like that I think Gabe would be the only player we would have to hedge a bit on D. The rest are capable of solid D. It would be nice to be able to use Gabe on offense so it's probably even more critical to get that athletic 5. I don't want to wait for Gabe to get solid on D before using him.

If brannen is going to bring in offensive minded guards who may struggle to stay in front then he needs the rim protection. Tari has great timing but sometimes lacks discipline. You can’t block every shot. Sometimes you just gotta wall up.

I’d love eliel back. He is exactly what this team needs. I’ve watched him guard smaller guards and not get beat.

Just find someone like him. Coach up his offense if it sucks

and teams shot 43.1% from 2 with Tre and Vogt in Brannens.

I don't care that much about finding a post up guy as long as he can walk and chew gum. Put backs, lobs, PnR's etc is fine with me. That's 6-8 ppg right there.

But yea Nysier Brooks is an interesting case of working for Mick but not for Miami.

His defensive synergy numbers are an insanely huge dip from his time at UC.

But I still believe in the idea of Brooks. Long, athletic for 6’11 and has some ability to cover on the perimeter in a pinch (his defense on the last second shot against WSU comes to mind

We just need a guy that can hedge. Vogt provides no help at all in the pnr game.

You don't have to have a Brooks or Eliel type guy to have somebody that isn't Chris Vogt. Just a guy with a little quicker feet.

Also Jr Vogt and Sr Vogt aren't even the same dude. He got slower and weaker which is why he was so ineffective this year. I dunno if he couldn't work out due to Covid or his shoulder recovery or what, but that just wasn't the same guy.

3 point shooting of late. Davenport has been pretty solid all year long even with volume. Mason is obviously a shooter. Guys like MAW and Mike are now proving they can be good when being selective. The jury is out on DD but he either needs to reduce volume or maybe his mental issues have caused a dip in %. Gabe can probably light it up like Mason. Tari can hit a reasonable % on low volume as a stretch 4.

With the way things are shaping up I would prefer a play maker on the wing over just a shooter. Getting both would be ideal. But I think the young guys are finding their confidence now. There was a time when Mikey would pass up an open 3 right on the line. He's taking/making them now and he also stroked one from deeper out. Mike put in a lot of work on shooting his Sr year and his %'s from 3 and FT were much improved...if memory serves me. He's 78% from the line so far.

Seeing how we are going to be replacing likely at least 5 players I would take Vogt back for situational duty. With the understanding (if we get an athletic 5) that his usage could depend heavily on fouls and situations.

But I don't know if Vogt would go for that over trying to make some money somewhere. I know his stock did not go up and it could get worse if he stays (if we bring someone in at the 5). I think he's mainly a 10-15 minute backup with some games getting up to 25 in the right scenario. It's not likely we can find 2 bigs that will be better for us. Hoping we can at least find 1 transfer and an off the radar HS kid or over seas guy that has some hops and doesn't run like a new born baby deer.

Right. I would take either Brooks or Eliel over Vogt right now, but any decent rebounder will do (anybody will have quicker feet than Vogt). Doesn't necessarily have to block shots or be 6'11". Look at how East Carolina beat Houston. 6'7" Jaydn Gardner pulled down 13 defensive rebounds. That would have made a world of difference in several of our games. A center like that even without the offensive skills (basically like Eliel) would be a big improvement.
