Mick a Candidate for UNLV?

The AAC isn't much different than CUSA was with us, UL, Marquette and Memphis. A top heavy league with some pretty good teams. The difference is the money. The gap between a league like the AAC and the power 5 conferences keeps widening and it makes it harder to keep up.

Exactly. There should be 6 solid teams in the AAC if Memphis ever got their stuff together. But like you said, the money is just not there.

Yes it does. The ACC has 6 teams in the sweet 16 and didn't even have Louisville. I am never going to get over the fact we did not get in to the ACC when expansion occurred can not believe if we would have been more proactive that we wouldn't have got in.

But you also need to take into account how different life and college sports are. Back when you were 16,17, TV's weren't what they are now, it was better for ppl to go to the games. Not so much now. It's all about fan amenities and experience. Current arena lacks all of that. I mean, just the concourses alone are a joke. They still have box TVs, some don't even have a clear picture. It's embarrassing. The food is a travesty. Cincy is a food town and Aramark to me is on the same level as high school concessions. The restrooms....horrid. These are things that have me furious as donating alum. It's pretty disrespectful from the AD, President, BOT to expect a winning program when they haven't invested in simply amenities. I understand why coach is pissed.

The concourse is awful! People were making fun of the tube tv's and the smell of fried foods at the concessions is so strong it made my wife feel ill and not want to buy anything. I got beer.

This is the biggest thing to remember in my mind. If you give Mick what he asks for and it doesn't improve, fire him and bring someone else in with a better arena to attract a better coach.

Always better to do these things from a position of strength, which UC is not in right now.

Did someone say that Cronin got sent home on a commercial flight? If so, thats hysterical. i can see him stuck in a middle seat with a mom and baby on one side and some fat ass spilling over the arm rest on the other. What a smack back to reality

he came back on a charter.

I'm just curious about how the alignment has benefitted or hurt teams that have managed to sneak in front of UC. Obviously there is more money to go around in the P5 but is that money helping the "fringe" teams that were not already in a P5 conference.

How many sports teams are enjoying MORE success because of the move and how many are enjoying less? How much has recruiting improved or gotten worse? How is Rutgers and WV enjoying the move? Pitt? I keep hearing we can't compete but our recruiting doesn't seem to have changed much before and after. Maybe it's too early to tell.

Obviously if you want to win a national title in football eventually it may be best to be in the P5 assuming they will get rid of any hopes of non P5 schools to win down the road. Of course they could do something similar in BB too I guess down the road.

WH if we were in a P5 conference we wouldn't be wondering were our funds would come from to renovate 5th/3rd. That is the advantage. I'll bet all the p5 schools have a larger budget then ours. I'll guess they have jets available for recruiting. Do you fly commercial much? When I worked I flew on a corporate jet often. Not because I was a big wig but because my job called for me to travel with the big wigs. Lol! I have worked a full day flew to NY for a meeting and dinner. Took in a NFL game and was home by 3:00 am. Try that on commercial. You know how many more actual live looks you can get recruiting, how many more face to face meetings with kids and how many less hours you have to spend away from your team. It's huge. How in the world did Louisvile separate itself from us. Do you really believe it's all coaching. How could they afford Pitino? Their facilities are light years ahead of ours. When people say we used to do this and we used to do that with this I laugh. Money is what drives the bus. Could someone come in here and improve on what Mick has given us, I'm sure it could be done. Are there more who would fail then succeed with the same facilities probably. But to really take the next step we need the money the p5 conferences affiliation affords us. Someone with more knowledge could probably verify this but it seems our booster numbers are not good. From the state of things we should have never walked down that road with renovating Nippert in the first place. We should have been a basketball only school like X that has passed us by. To completely lay all the blame on Mick for style of play,in game decisions, recruiting is weak. The question is, under Mick's leadership and a investment in the program for upgrades can we take the next step. If you believe it can you probably want him to stay if you don't you want him to leave. If we don't get the upgrades my opinion is whoever we bring in the difference between what Mick has provided and what we would get out of them would me minimal and could potentially be far worse.. Just my two cents.

Waite, all of it plays a role. IMO though, we tend to get a tad carried away with the budget, and worry less about the actual basketball games themselves. As I mentioned yesterday, a new arena won't crank our pace up out of the 300s. That's a coaching choice all the way. A new arena won't make decent recruits like Shaq Thomas, Ge'Lawn Guyn, Jermaine Sanders, Darnell Wilks, Biggie McClain, etc start improving more over the course of their careers. It all plays a role absolutely, but the product on the floor can't be completely brushed aside when evaluating the situation.

*A new arena also won't make Cronin suddenly start utilizing the 2 for 1 in late half situations. Still blows my mind that we had the ball twice in the UConn OTs with at least 48 seconds left and elected to crawl the ball up the floor and run the whole clock both times. That's just awful basketball. No arena can fix these little things.

Waite...I realize there is a bigger budget when getting in P5 because of profit sharing. However, my question was how have all the teams faired with this new windfall of cash? Rutgers, WV, Pitt, Syracuse, etc (compared to UC). Louisville has always had a bigger budget than us because they are the only game in town. They were doing well before leaving for P5 and are doing well after.

What I am waiting to see is all of these schools that were not in P5 and now are...we should be able to see significant improvements in their sports because their budgets and conference affiliation should allow for better recruiting etc.

we have a good product on the court. It may not be up to our standards which cracks me up because we haven't won a title in over 50 years but it is a very good product. And yes I want more. Bringing in better recruits will help with our style. As a coach you play to the strengths of the guys at your disposal. Mick gets a bunch out of his talent. I'm not saying he is perfect but he is a good coach. A new arena and a plane will open the doors that will hopefully give us access to better recruits. Again that is the debate. Some think it won't matter and it will be same old same and some think it does mater and will be different. All I can tell you is that most of the teams currently playing for the title are not worrying about facilities upgrades or their coach is flying commercial to recruit. Look I'm not in favor of firing Mick at this time. I think he operates with one hand tied behind his back and does quite well. If we get the upgrades and things don't change I will be leading the way on here to have him replaced. Until then he is my choice. I'm 63 the nexypt two years should be good teams I'm not liking the idea of players leaving and starting over with a up and comer. As I said I was here for the 24 years between Jucker and Huggins. At my age I'm not taking that chance. Give Mick the upgrades the next coach would need them as well. If he doesn't produce fire him. End of story.
