Mick a Candidate for UNLV?

Just weird he'd skip the season recap show when everyone thought he was going to show up. Makes it seem like the UNLV stuff is/was more real than him just using leverage without actually planning on going anywhere.

if that makes it seem more real, then it increases his leverage.

I said it jokingly a while back (good luck finding it) that if this was an undercover job by Cronin, then he's as true a Bearcat as there could ever be. Not sure that's what happened. But I wouldn't know, so let's go with it.

Take this for what it's worth because I'm not even completely sure this whole thing was a leverage play. It's completely possible that Mick had genuine interest in UNLV for reasons none of us are aware. It's also possible that he still leaves at this point.

What I was told today by a person I trust who would be in a position to "hear things" is that the leverage in play here was about securing the funding necessary to build the new arena as there have been many boosters on the fence and the athletic department had hit a wall in the effort to raise private funds. Mick wasn't happy about the timeline being pushed back a year and wanted guarantees around money and timelines.

Not saying I believe that, just sharing.

You know we discuss what impact the facility has on the program but isn't it a bit telling that Mick feels so strongly about its completion that he would consider leaving his dream job if he isn't given some assurances of its completion. Seems to me Mick puts a lot of weight on the importance of upgrading the facilities and its impact on the program. I mean he makes a bunch of apprearances to support the fund raising efforts which can be a huge drain on his job performance and family life.

Frankly, I don't think Mick is savvy enough for this to be a leverage play. I think the truth is that he has genuine interest in the UNLV job for reasons that have nothing to do with his current situation at UC. Whether or not that interest in enough to pull him away from UC remains to be seen.

What I am absolutely certain of is that when the upgrades do come, and if Mick is still our coach, there will be a whole new round of excuses and bogus reasons as to why his teams are producing at the same level they are today.

I would love the updated arena, etc to happen. But at the same time, would a new arena mean guys like Shaq Thomas suddenly make progress in their game over the course of 4-5 years? Once the guys are here, the arena perk for recruiting goes out the window.

It's never about the current players. It's about attracting the better future players. Some may not want to believe it but it is important.

This city already bought the "magic arena beans" with the Reds and Bengals and look what that got us. A new arena will be awesome for me as a season ticket holder. It will be great for the fans and the in game experience. It will provide a one year boost in attendance and more revenue in higher ticket prices and more premium seating options. It will also create a minor boost in recruiting.

A new arena will not suddenly turn Mick Cronin into Bill Self. Mick Cronin's teams will still be Mick Cronin's teams regardless of where they play. What's more likely to happen if Mick is still here is that in year 2 or 3 of the new arena fans will come at a lower rate than today because no one is going to pay a premium price to watch the product that we put on the floor if that product doesn't improve.

Cue the "Mick to Pitt?" thread!

Can't wait....

I don't deny that it is VERY important. It absolutely is...but some of the higher end guys we've been able to land despite the perceived disadvantages have really struggled to grow as players. The arena doesn't much matter in that regard.

Last time I checked, you can draft players in the Pros and they have to play for you or don't play. Doesn't work that way in college. Arenas matter whether you like it or not. Think back to when you were 17 or 18. If you went somewhere with a cool arena compared to somewhere with an outdated one, it would leave an impression on you.
