Mick a Candidate for UNLV?

I don't know the last time when our recruiting class was ranked worth a crap. It never seems to get inside the Top 30. This being the best thing he can do, just makes the rest of his coaching performance look that much worse, because he hasn't recruited very well.

Seems like our classes could get a better ranking if we regularly filled our scholarships. Kind of a "throw numbers at it" kind of thing. Hopefully we keep going down the transfer road too bc Washington is better than any JUCO, and he doesn't count towards our 2016 class ranking.

And if you re-ranked the classes once guys get into their careers, you can see Cronin has the eye for talent. DraftExpress currently has Caupain as the #24 JR. That'd be 5*. And Clark is #63 SO on that site. Solid 4*, not borderline Top 100.

Read Jacobs post...that's basically the point. If you're still shaking your head then there's no help for you. And if you still think the same way and star ranks rule the world then the fact that he's made 6 consecutive tournaments with "bad recruits" then he's gotta be coaching pretty decently, no? You gotta concede something in this case, either he's doing an ok job coaching or he's seeing that guys are more talented than their ranking. It can't all be gloom and doom

No, no it wouldn't. The top players from both of those classes are already in the NBA. They are not factored in those rankings.

No ones saying they wouldn't want the blue chip prospects but bad recruits and bad coaching do not equal 6 straight NCAA's. One of those things has gotta be somewhat blown out of proportion.

Very true. But many of the players that would be juniors in Troy's class have already filtered there way into the NBA. The good ones at least.

NTS basically said the same exact thing once I read through. Would love to see Troy have a great year and get drafted next year.

I think Cronin has done a very good job with the recruits he has brought in. The difference however is probably not being able to make deep runs in March or being a top 10 caliber team. You have to hit a bunch of home runs with 3 star kids to get there. Add a blue chipper or two and you have the formula. A good mix of 4 year guys with a couple of young impact studs will give you the depth, versatility, and talent you need.

Well I've been away from the board for a couple days, and I see this thread is still going strong lol.

Mick could solve a lot of his problems by recruiting a couple of shooters. What would you rather have, 4 years of a long athletic guy like Shaq Thomas who threw down the occasional nasty dunk and threw laser beams off the front of the rim or 4 years of a spot up shooter who can stretch the other team's defense and open up our post game??

Now the problem with the idea of getting a shooter is that Mick would also have to find a screener and a few guys who know how to pass the basketball.

Instead of guys like Shaq, KJ, Jermaine Lawrence, Deshawn Mormon, Jermaine Sanders ect..........I'd like to see Mick go out and get a pure shooter who he can then mold into the type of defensive player he wants. We have too many guys in our time under Mick who are strong defenders and who are a complete offensive liability.

No doubt. Ones that have the confidence, IQ, and skills to actually attack the basket. Been waiting on that one fore years.
Indications are that Mick is going after some guards that offer much more in the way of athletic ability. Some of the guys he is targeting are very capable of elevating our guard play. If he could land one or two of them we could be much improved

I'll believe it when I see it. Even if we land Bowman, there's no guarantee he has any success bc of the way we run our offense (Guyn comes to mind). Fact is, it's kind of tough to get to the hoop when we play with 2 big guys and go against a set defense 100% of the time. Another reason why Clark needs to post up less and continue to get the ball outside the 3 pt line more. Otherwise Bowman becomes just another Cronin style, athletic, inefficient jump shooter. We also don't need to bulk a guy like that up to 195 pounds.

The coaching carousel continues... looks like UNLV's new hire Chris Beard may bolt for the Texas Tech job that Tubby just left. No way he's even finished unpacking. Apparently the guy has three daughters that live near Lubbock, so you can't really blame him for being interested.

Poor UNLV. They were within an inch of landing their "grand slam hire". And now this.

With the way the AD acted after the Mick thing and now this, you'd have to think she is on the hot seat. What confidence could her bosses have in her at this point?

they should have had zero confidence in her the moment she went on the radio and naively lamented about some supposed verbal agreement.

i love all of this. i hope they never find a coach.

Maybe Mick will reconsider and we can have another 1000 post thread. That was fun.

Also, how can you blame the UNLV AD for the TTech job coming open?

Mick more than likely did verbally agree (and probably whined about the refs in the UConn game to the AD). I'm sure it happens often, which is why until they sign on the dotted line, it is meaningless. Mick looked bad on that one for sure.

i'm pretty sure the person who whines and comes out crying foul in a business where nothing is final until papers are signed (and even after that, really - see: chris beard) is the one who comes away looking pretty bad.

she should have just moved on without being so butthurt.
