At this point in time I agree with some others on here. We need to let Cane run the point for as many minutes as we can. Maybe not in the biggest games or the closest games but whenever we have a comfortable lead for sure. Let him sink or swim and make a few mistakes along the way so he can learn and get comfortable by years end. We can experiment when we have a nice lead.

This is our year to make a run. We lose Gary next year. He is close to irreplaceable. We also lose (love him or hate him) Kyle...but he can score and we aren't replacing that either. We need scoring in March. We need Cane running point IMO to make a run. He has to get comfortable at PG. WE can't get him comfortable at PG if he is playing off the ball. Play him off the ball when the game is close I don't care.
I prefer to let Mick make that call. He sees the tape and eyeballs these guys in practice everyday. My hope is that Cumberland finds his game again and Cane grows as a PG. I also hope that either Moore or Williams can develop into adequate backups on the wing.
I understand we need to let Cane run the point argument but we also have to win games. There are also other players who need developmental time. What if Cane breaks a ankle? Its a long season I would guess we will see some changes along the way. Nobody posting on here knows the team and there individuals strengths better then the Coach.

Yes things would be a lot simpler if Cane was were we need him to be at this time. I was getting as bit nervous early in the season when I started to read things on BCJ that said JJ may challenge for the starting PG spot. I mean I think JJ's game has improved but my hopes were that Cane was far and away a better player. Cane may get there but right now with the wings not performing and him still adjusting I can see why Mick is starting JJ.

He is

You don't bench your best guards bc of the idea that they *might* get into foul trouble. That's ridiculous. And if Broome got in foul trouble, Evans and Jenifer could both take ball handling duties. Broome is averaging 20 minutes per game anyway, so how is he going to get into bad enough foul trouble where we'd have an emergency? That one is pretty weak if you ask me.

Also, what happens if he plays more minutes? Nothing. He's fine. He's in great shape, is in his 4th year of college ball, and had way more on his plate in more minutes at Sacred Heart.
He isn't benching anyone. He needs quality depth at the wing and PG. He is using Cane to play both spots. Probably because he needs his offense more then his PG play. The foul trouble I was referring to was Evans or Cumberland. If they get in foul trouble I want Cane in as the wing instead of Williams or Moore. Especially in a big game. . Which is what Mick is doing now.

I don't think anyone hates Washington?

And yeah I mean perfect example is Ky Bowman. Goes for 30 points, 10 reb, 9 ast to beat Duke...BUT had 6 TO. If he would've come to UC he would've never been allowed to have a game like that. And it's a shame bc they beat Duke as a result. So maybe Broome has a 6 TO game. Obviously not what we want, but he could still help more than hurt, even in a game like that. Broome could make life easy on Coach during conference play and have games where he comes out of the gate hot and helps us put it away early. He could score 25+ on any given night. And I'd assume that why we recruited the 7th leading scorer in the nation, right?

The problem is a lot of that success is coming off the ball and not from the point. Cane's success is not coming at Jenifer's position often times. We need Cane to run point and that seems to be where he is less comfortable and less successful.

I agree he is more dynamic and a better player than Jenifer...but sometimes they are playing different positions. That is the problem. If Cane's success was coming at PG...I don't think we would be debating this issue.

where on earth is this coming from? i swear i watch different games than you guys do.

cane is absolutely at his best at PG with the ball in his hands. thats when he's penetrating and getting to the rim for easy lay ups and drawing fouls. he's wasted at the 2 spot the way we run our offense because he's not a jump shooter. evans excels at the wing for us because he is a very good jump shooter.

this rhetoric that cane isn't a point just blows my mind. i have no idea where you guys get that.

I think Mick would tell you he is a better player. I think it comes down to how he is being forced to use the two of them. Right now he needs Cane to give him scoring form the wing as well. He is getting minutes at PG and at the wing. With Cumberland struggling and the freshman not ready he has to use Cane at the wing.

Broome, Evans, Cumberland is better than Jenifer + any 2 of our those guys. Cumberland struggling isn't helped by putting him out there with a PG who also can't score. That doesn't help our offense.

What if anyone breaks an ankle? I get you want to defend Coach, but c'mon some of this stuff is really flimsy.

He can move over from PG and you can bring Jenifer in. Or Evans can move from PG to the wing, and you bring Jenifer in. There. Problem solved.

I love Kyle...."love him or hate him" is just an expression (maybe the wrong one). I don't think anyone hates him...but the frustration is palpable.

Cartman said it best "God dammit Kyle". When Kyle makes bad choices there are people on this board who tend to go a little apeshit...lol

Lol. Probably the only Cartman line that should be repeated on here haha.

Say we're in the Sweet 16...which 5 players give us the best shot to win a game like that if we get their A game?

I dare someone to say Jenifer over Broome. And that's what it all comes down to for me. What are we doing to prepare for what's coming? The Safe Sally game doesn't get us where we wanna go.

No kidding...in a must win situation the lineup on the floor HAS to be:

Broome
Evans
Cumberland
Clark
Washington

very few exceptions to that list

I'm sure when the coach becomes more comfortable with him you'll see more of that. Right now he is most comfortable playing off the ball scoring. With Cumberland struggling a bit he has decided to bring him off the bench.

the thing is mick knows. at the end of the florida game he played his best 5. problem is they so rarely play together it has to be tough to be in sync.

We don't run our offense the same when we get Cane the ball on the wing. He's not just standing out there waiting for a shot (like Cumberland or Evans). We run him off the baseline and set a pick so he can get the ball on the move. Then he goes to work...he's not been attempting a lot of 3's from the wing.

In terms of Evans. He has always struggled to create anything other than a 3 point shot on the wing (which isn't really creating). He needs a little space and a head start for some reason. He has been more successful creating different shots for himself from the top of the key. He's a jump shooter on the wing...not much more. When he starts from the top...he has been getting off some better looks closer to the bucket.
