New Coach

Is there a coach out there that can bring a shooter with him...lol?

I kid a little but I would imagine if we bring in a coach who likes putting the ball in the hole....we will be looking at a totally different batch of players than we have been.

And I have to wonder what a new coach will do with Cronin's roster filled with many athletes? Will it even fit their system of coaching?

Are we looking at a coach who can do something with the current roster or rebuild it for their own style? Those are some tough questions since we have a pretty good squad for next season. It was built for Cronin though.

I'd argue that Williams, LoJo (please stay) and Curtis (please come) are not built for Cronin's style. He would have fit them in. I'm looking forward to seeing what a new coach can do with those players. You can be a great coach having a system, recruiting to it and always playing it. You can equally be a great coach if you are able to recruit the best talent you can get and mold the system around the talent each year.

Not sure I agree there. Williams and LOJO are both great athletes with limited shooting potential and seem to fit the Cronin mold to a T. Not sure on Curtis.

If you are speaking of going up tempo rather than half court...I would agree let them loose.

Yeah you second paragraph.

I am hearing Frank Martin's buyout shrunk from $2 to $1M. If you go cheap he is your option. Someone posted earlier that a coach needs to speak the language of recruits. This is 100% accurate. That said, you need assistants who find and court recruits. The head coach is the closer.

I was surprised how old some of those coaches are. Brannen and McMahan both mid-40s.

These searches are a bit confusing. UCLA goes from Howland to Alford to Cronin who is a poor man's Howland. They should have kept Ben Howland. UC is looking at Martin who is a poor man's Cronin.

why did i also see it was 12.6 million??

I think i'm growing more towards wanting Brannen. I discounted him some at the start because I didn't want us to just quickly go with a guy that was close by and 'easy' but I think I like what he brings to the table.

His teams tend to shoot a higher percent on 2 point shots which I think is a good sign of an offensive coach, and his teams have been really good at keeping opponent 3 point % down 3 straight years.

I understand ppl don't want NVE but I'm still trying to understand exactly why. Experience couldn't possibly be an issue the man has all the experience, he's more than qualified. I pray to god this administration doesn't mess up our UC basketball by making some lazy bogus hire. Pls inject life into the program bc we are certainly teetering here. Martin and or a mid major coach that can't make an adjustment will certainly set us back and I'm afraid all the alumni or former players lobbying for NVE will want nothing to do with the program. In college traditions do matter... NVE is in the UC hall of fame for Christs sake, the lane has been paved he's put in his work he deserves a shot give him the job

People don’t want him because it has rarely worked out. I think it could but looking at the history of former players at their school, it has rarely worked

Lets ask St. Johns and Chris Mullin how that worked out.

Thier not the same ppl, dont have the same personality or path. Thats box thinking and its not fair. If he can't coach here where can he? smh wow

I understand the NBA assistant coaching experience and all of that but lets be real if his name wasn't Nick Van Exel and he wasn't on a UC final 4 team would you really want him as a coach? If another guy not named NVE had the same coaching credentials as NVE, people would laugh at the thought of hiring him.

Box thinking? Not really, History seems to prove everything we have said. Its pretty simple. The program is in limbo right now with only having 2 coaches in the last 30 years and I really don't want to bet the house on a guy who is on an NBA bench making little to no decisions, but b/c he was a UC great and his name is known he is all of a sudden a quality hire? Why is no other college reaching out to him for a HC job?

Cuz it's been proven that just because you could play the game, doesn't mean you know how to coach it. It also doesn't mean it cant happen, but that's a pretty large gamble to take at this stage IMO.

My guy you are seriously reaching tho, the obvious simple thing to do would be to strip him of two glaring authentic accomplishments that are associated with the program. So are we gonna act or pretend like we dont knw this man and witnessed his maturity and leadership? To automatically assume he doesn't knw anything is distastful taking in account his 13yrs of NBA experience and running an NBA "Offense". Me personally I def feel if you have brannen or NVE in your living room as a young highschool kid Van Exel can sell the program just as well as anybody if not better and I don't see why not. This idea of starting fresh is mind boggling for one bc the list of candidates we are looking at aren't really standing out anyway. Mick has blasted NKU for the past two yrs the games weren't even close, and that was the same result in the tournament as well so the hype cycling around him is also somewhat perturbing.. All I know is this would keep UC sexy, in the eyes of the media, community, and former players. If we are to hire an outsider it has to be a homerun and currently their are none out there as we can see

My guy you are the one trying to sell a coach who has no HC experience, no recruiting ties. Basically the exact opposite of what Penny Hardaway was and you are telling me I am reaching? Just because he was in the NBA means top recruits want to play for him? But yes I am reaching. I understand everything you are saying I really do and whomever they hire I hope does well.

So you are saying being a highschool headcoach surpasses being an NBA assistant that's interesting... Or GLeague experience? And I guess our former Impactful players don't know what they are talking about either, you knw the likes of Corie Blount, Kenyon Martin and Terry Nelson. Jerry Stackhouse as well just to throw his name in there. I actually thought Mick was a good coach but NVE would make UC cool again and it's important we carry on the tradition that got us to this point. We are fortunate enough to have guys that want to be involved and who have positioned themselves to Garner such a position. Not every program has that, yea some don't succeed but you can't go off judging everyone the same NVE is a unique guy that many respect. I gaurantee he would get Cumberland to stay
