Notre Dame to Big 12?

Nothing is going to happen with conference realignment until the selection process for the playoff is determined. If the SEC gets it's way and can have more than 1 team in the playoff, you can probably expect to continue to see conference movement. If not, and it is determined you must win your conference to be eligible (my preference), then you will probably see the movement of teams out of conferences slow down quite a bit. There would be no advantage for a team like Clemson or FSU or VT to leave a weak ACC for a stronger conference.

The potential catch here is with schools like ND and BYU. If it is decided that you have to win a conference to be eligible for selection, how does ND and BYU get included presently? These are the types of things that have to be determined. I personally don't see ND going to a conference for football as long as they have the ability to have access to a National Title without a conference and they still can pull in the amount of money through NBC that they currently do. There really is no advantage for ND going to a conference at this point for football. That, of course, is subject to change based on TV and what happens with this playoff situation.

As for ND going to the Big 12 for their non-football sports, I'll believe it when I see it. There is a lot of posturing going on right now and the Big 12 is trying to lure ND football any way they can. If the Big 12 realizes that ND is not coming for football, I think this dies and dies pretty fast. If they still think they can lure ND for football, this will continue to pop up from time to time in the media.

This whole thing will come back to haunt the non SEC power conferences and Notre Dame when year after year 2 SEC teams will capture 2 of the 4 playoff spots. Another probably going to the Big 12 Champ with the Big 10, Pac 12, and ACC fighting to place one team in the final spot.

Presidents are meeting right now to finalize playoff system. We should see some movement after things are finalized in next couple weeks and Jason, user and ee will owe me an apology

As it is now ND would have no better chance to get one of the 4 playoff spots if were conference affiliated or not.

Since being conference champion is a factor but not a requirement (see article from espn http://espn.go.com/college-football...ge-football-playoff-approved-questions-remain) I still believe we are going to see 2 SEC teams get 2 of the spots and the probably the Big 12 Champ getting one leaving the Big 10, ACC, and Pac 12 to fight over last spot. Other than a money grab, the move to the super conferences isn't going to boost most of the teams chances into the final 4. Missouri and Texas A&M are always going to be middle of the pack in the SEC. In fact West Virginia, Pitt, and Syracuse probably hurt their chances by moving. Neither is going to go undefeated where they are going...and in the process ruined the best basketball conference.

I think a good barometer of the 4 team playoff system is: Would the Beracats have made it when they went undefeated under Kelly? I would like to think they would have along with TCU. But when there is a selection committee...one never knows.

Still waiting on that Louisville to the Big 12 that you were telling us was as good as done. Grow up.

There was an article on ESPN that discussed this yesterday. A scary thought for UC was that there was a strong chance a 12-0 UC would have been passed up for Alabama, TX, TCU and Florida. Remember, the Frogs were ranked higher than UC in all the human polls and Florida, the 12-1 defending National Champ, would have gotten the same benefit of the doubt that Alabama did last season.

TV executives have shown that the only way the Big12 increases a TV contract money is with Notre Dame, however ND to the Big12 is never happening. Once against BearcatMick is proven to be completely wrong.

Naturally you continue with this misinformation because you don't have an argument that holds water against me. Conference realignment is happening whether you believe it or not

Nd is firmly in the mix first in Olympic sports then football in 2015 and you know it. Another swing and a miss from you

Agree with Eternal E., Notre Dame will not join a conference for football.

I disagree. The new football playoff is going to force them to join a conference.

I'm not so sure. Since being a conference champion is not a requirement, Notre Dame wouldn't need to join a conference.

I'm not sure if they could get more money in a conference versus re-upping their TV deal. That could influence things.

I think for a while there was speculation that if Notre Dame ever joined a conference it would be the ACC since there are some more comparable academic institutions. I wonder if even joining for oylmpic sports in the Big 12 is a sign that ACC is going to be on unstable ground not unlike the Big East.

I find it humorous that the universities have convinced people that academic standing should make a different with who you play sports against.

Again, yet another random, made-up point to keep the big dogs in the lead.

I'm not saying that academics is the only factor for Notre Dame, but I think it is a factor. Independence is part of their identity as well as emphasis on a strong undergrad education which can be seen in conflict for instance with the Big 10 which has a lot of American Association of Univerities (AAU) members which emphasizes research and graduate programs. Also, the idea of being a "national university" can be seen as being is conflict with joining a regional conference.

They will have equal access to the 4 team playoff and this contract is for 12 years.

Any year that ND goes 12-0 they will be one of the 4 chosen ones. Eternal E is very correct, ND has no motivation to join a conference. NBC will take care of them as far as TV money is concerned.
