Octavius Ellis

Octavius Prime!!

If he can keep his emotions in check I think he can get to 13 and 8.5 (or better) based on the idea he is adding muscle and seems motivated. I think it is clear to him that he needs to work hard to make it to the NBA. He has to keep his mental game sharp and focused so he doesn't let old habbits creep in to get in the way of his dream.

Hahaha I like Octavius Prime lol. I don't think it is unreasonable for him to be right around 14 and 11 next season. He'll need to cut that traveling BS out of his game and limit the goaltends... But if he added that much muscle already, it would appear he is having a Justin Jackson type offseason. We still have 4 months of the offseason remaining

I hope the extra size shows up more in his offense and defense and doesn't motivate him to pick some more fights or get even more flagrant in his fouls. Not quite sure how to view this....lol!

I think a Justin Jackson type leap is a bad comparison. While I get that it was recent and I also understand the sentiment, JJ was almost unproductive his junior year, especially offensively. His leap was from nothing to something. Ellis was a solid player, thus I think a better hopeful comparison would be Bobby Brannen or Kenyon Martin (although not as elite as Kenyon) or for recent history, SK. Kilpatrick was a solid player his junior year and took his game to the next level. That is what we all are hoping out of Ellis this year. I don't think he'll be a first-team All American, but he won't be asked to solely carry the load either like SK kind of was. I think if he makes a few right adjustments there's no reason he can't be an elite player this year. Obviously adding bulk and solidifying some post moves and cutting down on the travelling. I think as well he needs to really utilize his short to mid-range jumper. If he can become deadly at that and add a post move or two he will be very tough to guard because if you play soft he can just drain a shot, if you play in he can make a move to the basket. He has to get his head on straight as well. Teams will be gunning for him and refs, too. He has a reputation and that will haunt him.

I don't want us to run offense through Ellis. Post touches every now and again are ok, but I want him getting his points from finishing plays. Mostly tip ins/dunks, mid range catch and shoot, pick and roll, big to big passing, and transition. Not straight post ups or attacking with the ball from outside. That could help cut down on his traveling. We really don't need him out there trying to do too much as a creator. Clark and DeBerry should be guys #1 and #2 in post touches imo.

You know Jacob initially reading this I wanted to disagree with you, but after sitting back and thinking about it, you couldn't be more correct. Post Clark and DeBerry, and let Tae get his touches of misses, or mid range, hopefully cut down on his travels.

Great thoughts!

Anyone feel like he's feeling a little pressure to live up to 1st team AAC? He seemed frustrated last night...he had a few calls go against him, and maybe a couple times he could've been sent to the line but wasn't. I think he needs to just relax and let the game come to him. I expect to see him break out a little over the next few games. A monster game is coming...I can feel it.

I could see the frustration a lot as well. He definitely had a couple calls go against him on the offensive and defensive end but he can't let that affect his play. Like you said he needs to let it come to him. He was forcing way to much last night trying to get a call. The majority of his points are going to come on offensive boards and penetration and passes from the point guards and not when he forces things on the block. One positive was that he was still able to go out and get his rebounds. Great to see he didn't let it effect his whole game overall.

Stop putting ball on floor. Pressing too much just relax and become defensive MONSTER get buckets off put backs. No more throwing ball into ellis to post up. More deberry and Clark on that front.

He has a good chance being a first teamer on defense alone. I don't think he is pressured. It's Octavious, everyone knows he has a temper so when things don't go his way he tends to wear it on his sleeves. He has a much better supporting cast this year so he won't be relied upon as much.

He was weak last night. Instead of making posts moves he just tried to power over the defender and got knocked off balance himself. Disappointed in how he played.

He hasn't really found his way in the halfcourt offense. I agree with Bulldog about Clark and DeBerry getting the most post touches. I'd like to see a 2 man pick and roll game with Caupain and Ellis to get Ellis facing up more when he catches it. He can knock down those mid range shots and he's a good passer. The only problem with that is his little travelling issue when he wants to drive to the hoop.

The side pnr with Troy and Ellis is probably my favorite action we run. I know it's nothing revolutionary, but when Troy catches the ball on the left wing with a live dribble and gets a screen from a Ellis toward the middle, it's virtually unstoppable. Ellis is going to get so many easy dunks off this.

Agreed, Clark and Deberry should be the post guys and Ellis is better facing the basket and with the midrange j. Too much happy feet right now for the post

That pick and roll is a thing of beauty when's it working. I wish they would run it more. That is one of those plays that works better with Troy than it would with Jenifer because Troy will often make the pass over the defender. Jenifer would not have that luxury with the height differential.

Ellis cannot score on straight up posts ups. Personally, I'd invert Clark and Ellis in our half court offense and put Ellis at the high post and use him in pick and rolls and Clark in the post.
