OT: Tournament Discussion

Trying to imply that Duke losing in the first round is comparable to UC losing in the first round. Coach K is something like 24-5 in first game of the tournament, Mick is 1-2 in the first round, 1-1 in the second round and 0-1 beyond that.

You might be taking the comment too literally. I think he was poking fun at the hysteria of some fans calling for established & successful coaches to get fired when their teams get upset.

Yeah got that, just hate when people do that because it isn't even a close comparison. It was like those fans that would post Coach K's record early in his career to justify Mick's struggles.

Upsets are going to happen in a single elimination format (one thing Barkley has stated logically doing analysis on college format). A coach just has to go deep enough to balance those out over the long run.

Regarding the one and done format of the tournament, I wonder if we'll ever see changes like best 2 of 3 in any rounds? Or possibly re-seeding after rounds. Like, in the AAC tourny I wish they would have reseeded so we got to face Houston instead of UConn. There's so much drama now, I doubt the bigwigs would let this to be overhauled, but it's always interesting to think about.

Tennessee might be the most underseeded team in the tournament. They are ranked #9 in the KenPom rankings with a #23 offense and #13 defense (they were 13 before the tournament) but were given an 11 seed! They have a good path to the second weekend.

Absolutely. I think Pomeroy wrote an article saying that the season is really such a small sample size it's hard to say with certainty how good these teams are. For example, in the last 20 or so years the preseason #1 has gone deeper in the tourny more often than the final #1 in the AP.

I picked Tenn to win this game based on his ranks. Heck, they could realistically to the elite 8 with Duke losing.

People did the same thing to compare Andy Dalton to Peyton Manning in the playoffs.

New Mexico is the Cincinnati of the west. They had all kinds of scoring droughts in the second half and have flamed out in the first round two years in a row.

During the selection show, someone on CBS said Stanford runs the perfect offense to offset New Mexico's 1-3-1 defense. Not sure if that's why they won the game, but I don't believe it is coincidence these matchups occur (like Manhattan v UL) even though the committee says they try to stay true to seed lines and not look for certain matchups.

They got the weakest 6 seed maybe ever. UMass is ranked #50 before the game which was around the same as some auto-bids like ND State and SF Austin. For comparison as a 12 seed Harvard was #33.

Wow! That is a surprise. RT @YahooForde: Y! Sources: Buzz Williams poised to become next coach at Virginia Tech

There was some friction between him and the administration at Marquette so much so he was rumored to be interested in the SMU job. He's from the Texas area so you'd think he could hold out for the job at Texas A&M or maybe even UT-Austin.

Also, shout out to Whit Babcock. He pulled Tuberville from TTech and now Buzz from Marquette.

Talk about a grand slam hire by new Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock. The tie in this was Mick Cronin -- who is tight with Buzz Williams.

Haha no one wants to coach in the new big east anymore, coaches want to play good teams on ESPN. The new big east is getting even worse add this to Doug McDermott being a senior maybe providence will keep winning the big east

This is fun. Can anyone point out a team that Cronin has greatly underachieved with? We're talking about a coach who basically took over major program with mid major talent, improved in wins every year, and brought the program back to the national stage. It's just hysterical that anyone could think he is somehow holding this program back by his coaching. Half of the posts reflecting on the year mention that the hey thought this team was bubble team coming into the year...so what is the gripe?

Who knows what this may do for the spring recruiting cycle. A lot of good players may become available.

Marquette had the 11 the ranked recruiting class, not sure if they will go with him or not but they are some good players. Also I was reading up on Luke kennard from franklin high school in Ohio, kid was a stud 5 star white guy that averaged 40 pts and can shoot, just what we need, it's to late now as he already has his top 4 but I did not see a cinci offer maybe I missed it but how could mick not recruit this guy

You don't waste time recruiting a guy you have no chance to get. Kennard's final 5 are UK, Duke, OSU, Michigan, and Kansas. You think a Cincy offer would have knocked one of these teams off the top 5? Mick has said he identifies guys he wants, and then sees if there is mutual interest. There was none from Kennard.
