Seems to be a lot of talk about who should play where and for how long. Not just in this game, but all season. So I thought I'd open a thread specifically for it, so the convo doesn't die with each passing game thread.

Out of the 80 minutes at the 1 and 2, I am comfortable having Caupain play 30+ minutes, with Cobb and KJ taking the other 50 or so (divide those 50 between them on an in-game basis). At the 3, I'm not crazy about a 25/15 split between Sanders and Shaq. But considering the defense we play, I don't see another choice. The 4 gets a little tricky. Clark has had his struggles of late, and we all know Quadri isn't ready for full time minutes. Shaq picking up the slack at the 4 can only work in certain matchups, but again, not sure what other choice we have. And I will say, that does allow us to go smaller and stay within our defensive strategy. And a lot of people have mentioned wanting to go smaller at times. The 5 is fine imo. Play Ellis as much as you can with DeBerry as a decent enough backup.

We struggle with rebounds when both Shaq and Sanders in game same time. Mormon and Moore have to see some type of minutes EVERY game.

I am pretty much okay with the minute distributions, it is the timing of the substitutions that bothers me. We HAVE to keep at least 3 starters on the floor at all times. If we are going to play Moore and Thomas at the same time then Caupain and Cobb need to be out there too.

The people that think Clark should not start are outrageous, he plays great defense and is a good rebounder, great at times. Deberry is better offensively and that is it. It is not enough to put him in over Clark. When Ellis and Clark are both out our defense takes a huge hit, when one it is in the defense can perform as usual. When both are in its extremely difficult to score inside.

I don't know why people have a problem with Clark. Even in a "bad" game yesterday he pulled down 5 boards and had 4 assists with 0 turnovers in 18 minutes. They doubled him when he got the ball and he made nice passes out of it.

Play Caupain, Sanders, Clark, and Ellis the majority of the game. Play Cobb, KJ, DeBerry a good amount. Rarely play Moore, Morman. That's all I got.

I think you have to be very liberal with minutes, considering how hot/cold guys can get. There's so much up and down with basically all our players that it seems impossible to say exactly how many minutes guys deserve. The only one that deserves 35-40 minutes is Caupain. Throw everyone else in the 5-35 minutes category.

Idk why my thread was 86'd the only thing we need to be talking about is playing Cobb more than kj that's it. Kj is horrible Cobb is good. Pretty simple in my mind.

Both are extremely streaky shooting the ball. Both seem to be either hot or cold, no in between.

Cobbs hot seems to be much hotter than KJ's though. When he's on he can straight fill it up and he definitely has more diversity to his offensive game.

I think KJ starts and sees more time because he plays within the system better. There's no denying that Cobb can get hot and when he does it is a difference maker. But there have been as many spells of him being hot as there are of him dribbling the air out of the ball 40 feet from the basket and not working within the offense and chucking up bad three pointers that lead to fast breaks the other way. In my opinion when Cobb's shot isn't falling the only other thing he brings to the table is the ability to bring the ball up the court and with Caupain getting so many minutes we don't need him in for that as much as the other things. I think they have used Cobb great. He is always on floor when Caupain isn't to be pg and he gets plenty of minutes with Caupain. When he is hot and hitting his shots he gets left in the game, when he is cold KJ sees the minutes down the stretch. I really do believe KJ is the better all around player though and I think he has way more upside in that I think he'll get better.

KJ did hit 10 3s out of 19 in the 4 game stretch before this past 2 gane road trip. Cobb was 4-17 overall in the 3 games leading up to this past road trip. I don't get why some (not you) feel like one has to be great and the other has to be terrible. We have plenty of minutes for both. Both have helped us win. And both have obviously struggled at times. But we need both of them.

I completely agree with this. As I posted in another thread, their offensive shooting stats are nearly identical across the board. How can one player with those stats be awesome and the other terrible? It doesn't make sense.

Morman and Moore will both be good players. Morman hurts you because he is out of control and does not play in the flow of the offense but I do like his attacking style and that's what I think will help in the future.

Moore is improving but still behind Clark, Deberry and Ellis.

I think once Morman realizes what his role is and accepts it, then he can start to improve and help the team out. He has the athletic ability, he just has play in the system (and honestly I expected huge things from him this year after watching some scrims and pre-season, but it hasn't transitioned to real games.)

Moore flashes signs for sure. With a full season of our weight program I'm interested to see what he will turn out like. His feet are on the slow side right now and I'd say he's a little unsure of himself when he's out there, but if he can figure it out and get in shape he could be really good.

I just hope both of these guys stick with the program. It is tough as a freshmen right now, with teams starting to really shorten their rotations. If both can work hard this offseason, they will certainly have a chance to make an impact next year.

Agreed

As I posted in another thread, streaky shooting is not the only thing Cobb brings to the table. Are you aware that, in equal minutes played, KJ has 26 boards to Cobb's 51? That's not standing around the 3 pt line. Also, Cobb has committed 24 fouls to KJ's 51. Does that mean KJ is playing better D, hence more fouls? I don't know. If so, there isn't anything measurable to show for it in terms of steals or blocks, they are virtually the same. TO's? Cobb 24, KJ 33. The big disparity in rebounds, coupled with fewer TO's and fouls add up to quite a few more possessions for the Cats, and the way they shoot, they need all the possessions they can get.

I'd rather have a guy stray somewhat from the system (Cobb) than have a guy (KJ) at the 28 ft marker passing the ball back to the point all night. Look it's about positive production and at this moment in time KJ is not providing anything remotely positive. I've said it before, name me a High Div. 1 Starting 2 guard that is avg. 5.9 points a game. If you can't score then you need to bring something else: Does he rebound? No. Create for others? No. He's got more turnovers than assists. Defense - Yes. Hustle - Yes. Team player - Yes. Is this enough to take the minutes away from a player or players that can contribute more positively. I don't think so. Remember last year how he attacked the rim often. This is what he needs to start bringing his game back to. You can't sit 25 foot from the basket and be an offensive threat.
