Did the athletic department really expect to do this in complete secrecy with no one leaking anything and Brannen just sitting there and taking it? Maybe they've got a perfect plan for executing a coaching change, but it seems like they didn't have a PR plan at all.

A new Justin Williams article.

Brannen's lawyer claims to possess a document that JC hasn't seen and that (somehow) fully exonerates Brannen.

More players claims of issues. Claims that Brannen was reprimanded previously for going to long on practices and that he called a meeting and demanded to know who outed him.

Claims of practice so long/intense that medical staff had to step in to stop the practice. Players cramping, getting IV's, getting hurt. Other practices where medical staff wanted to step in, but feared repercussions from Brannen.

Justin Williams also quoted some of the possible reasons to fire with cause. It sounds like they may be aiming for this one. “Coach intentionally, negatively, and materially impacts the welfare of a student-athlete;”

The “team meeting demanding to know”, is the bad part. If anyone played even high school level basketball, the long practices, where everyone is cramping and feels like they are about to die are actually normal.

When your already going over your cara alottment and the medical staff wants to step in but Is afraid of reprocussions from the coach, that’s a huge huge huge problem.

Players can die from being over worked.

John brannen had a serious neglect for his players well being. He is not only an awful coach, but an awful human. I hope he’s applying for unemployment next week

If we are going by that. I would guess that a formal reprimand and then continuing to go over practice times would get the intentionally part down. Negatively and materially depend on the medical staff. But this is the closest we've seen to the something that justifies firing Brannen.

That literally happens at every football/basketball practice in America. I’m not just saying that. Maybe I’m am truly from a different era but coaches would set up garbage cans to throw up in so you didn’t have to stop in my high school. And I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.

I think the main issue seems to be brannen either doesn’t care about his players or his players didn’t think he cared about them. Both of which are major problems. If players know you care, they will do pretty much anything for you. If they know their best interest are in your mind, these things wouldn’t be an issue. I’d guess cronin and Huggins practices were really hard also, just a hunch. I’d guess they would have practices that went long also. But those players knew they cared. That seems to be the difference.

Uc has to start pushing its side of the story to ESPN

That’s what brannen’s lawyer is doing, all while the Bad info on brannen is stuck behind a pay wall.

Uc needs a national writer on their side.

This is propaganda warfare

Uc gets what it deserves with their clown of an AD and prez. They give zero shits about the supporters of the programs.

Greg Marshall allegedly punched a player, choked an assistant, and mocked a Native American player. All of who were specifically named and the stories corroborated by players on the team.

Wichita St. still ended up paying out 7.75 million to Marshall in a settlement that allowed him to resign (not fired).

This leaves me with some questions:

1.) Is our case stronger than theirs?

2.) Did Wichita St. pay out a settlement out of the goodness of the hearts, or did they know further litigation was going to prove more costly (time and money wise)?

3.) How is it a school like Wichita St can come with 7.75 mil to move on and be done with it, but we can't come up with far less?

Everything I've seen thus far has told me that the AD has mishandled this situation from the jump. The timeline (meeting with players, then two weeks to announce investigation, thenone more week to suspend him) reaks of ineptitude. This an absolute shitshow.

Not only does Brannen need to go, but Cunningham needs to as well. This is not going to end well, and every day that passes is hurting this athletic department.

The answer to number 3 is one of Wichita’s main boosters and the person their arena is named after is one of the richest people in the world. I’m guessing he helped with the buyout but not positive.

As for the rest, you make I good, Wichita had a far better case than us and still had to buy him out. We should have fired brannen by now. If it’s going to court anyway, it doesn’t matter when it does. This the the worst possible way we could have approached the situation

Marshall's settlement was for only half of his full buyout. The fact that he accepted the settlement means the administration's case was pretty strong. The fact that Brannen has not yet agreed to any settlement either means the administration's case is not very strong or Brannen is just bluffing, perhaps using a drawn out legal battle as leverage.

If we had big athletics boosters like Wichita (Charles Koch) or Indiana (Mark Cuban), I'm sure we would have fired Brannen already.

There is posturing on both sides that’s for sure

At this point it's obvious Brannen won't be the coach next year. If he is, then Cunningham has absolutely botched this and knee-capped the program.

So really all that's left to do is figure out how much UC is paying. UC has much more to lose from a drawn out legal battle. Brannen might be throwing away any chance of coaching again, but he can still retire a multi-millionaire. There's no reason for him to do anything other than let his lawyers loose now.

The administration had to know that's what would happen if they backed Brannen into a corner. I don't know why they didn't have some kind of PR strategy for this.

This smells like a railroad to me. Problem is if there is nothing solid on Brannen no coach worth his salt is going to come in here. Fans should be supporting Brannen until something solid materializes against him. We were all happy with the performance in the conference tournament and with how the young crop of Brannen recruits were developing. We have now turned on him without even a serious allegation let alone a shred of evidence.

Why is running a program where student welfare is number 1 a bad thing?

Should we let these complaints of CARA violations and a scared medical staff just go on with out investigation?

Somehow, after people reading these allegations which are likely not even the full worst of it, they still support John brannen.

Cunningham did not ruin this program. John Brannen's actions did. Literally what choice did Cunningham have? to just ignore it?

Why did the shit ad wait until after the season if it was so egregious? News flash, they wouldn’t. Or the ad is complicit.

Really shouldn’t be too hard to verify the claims against Brannen. Plenty of people should be able to corroborate that story if it’s true.

But if that is the story, it seems confusing this is taking so long.

Also not really sure how he got suspended today unless it’s retaliation for the story yesterday coming out. Every bit of this entire situation is horrendous. Nobody will come out clean.

Justin, I think the gist is that to this point, they’re
still just allegations.??

Interesting I did not mention Cunningham. That said, this may not be a railroad, it may be the University doing due diligence which would make sense with multiple student complaints no matter how baseless. Under that scenario Brannen would be back. Unlike you I have not read about alleged CARA violations. The only allegation I have read is that a player “lost his love for basketball”. As for medical personnel, being “scared”, that does not mean much. Who is this person? Many of those are grad students in sports physical therapy or similar field who do not know a whole hell of a lot at this stage of their career so being “scared” is not ground for firing.
