I'm not sold on this... You can win with high level system basketball. Villanova. Butler. Creighton. Etc.

But do agree. This is not UC brand and the turnover has become alarming. John needs to learn to mesh the two styles better... And a key peice to the is Tari imo.

I don't disagree, although Villanova and Creighton are getting high level recruits now.

The thing is, you can't come into a program averaging 30 wins per season and then have multiple losing seasons in order to implement your system. Brannen can afford one poor season (this year) before fans are ready to move on. It would be different if we were Tulane or ECU.

He needs to find a way to mesh the two styles and win while he transitions to his system. He also needs to find a way to make it more appealing for star players. The only player Brannen seems willing to adjust for is Chris Vogt.

Lance Stephenson..
Yeah, I forgot about Lance lol.

Shaq Thomas and Justin Jackson played in the G League. Yancy Gates probably could have if he didn't choose to play overseas. Cash probably too.

I'm not really sure what the point is. None of those guys are really NBA talent. We've got guys on the roster who have potential to be a G League caliber player. Almost anyone could turn into a Justin Jackson or Troy Caupain type if they progress. And if we're including Kyle Washington, then transfers are fair game. Who knows what we bring in for next year.

I'm hoping a transfer big is a pretty easy sell. Minutes are clearly there for the taking. Players should be able to see how much Brannen likes to feed Vogt. There has to be someone out there wanting to start for us.

With Eason wanting to play the 4 I would say yes...easy sell. We may have to grab 2 bigs. Get a sub first and then sell the big prize. Even without Harvey the wing isn't the easiest sell. If Davenport slides down to the 3 we will still have...

Davenport, Gabe, Mason, MAW

There is something to sell there for a very good transfer I guess but the 5 is the easiest.

Yeah if we are counting g-leauge, anyone can play in that league. Like I said, Shaq Thomas played. If you’ve watched a g-league game you quickly realize the level of player in that league. Honestly Davenport, dejulius could play in the g-league. Eason could on potential alone. That really isn’t saying anything

CJB's system of sharing the basketball and all for one one for all philosophy is a good system when it's done the right way. It is possible for a player to avg 20 ppg. With better efficiency Jaron and Keith could have done it already. It's not a system that everyone has to avg 10-12 points.

Brannen is perfectly fine running the offense and then at the end of clocks getting the ball to feature players. If Harvey would have waited one more year...it would have likely been DD and him. But he is young and confident and his patience wore out is my guess.

We have to find a way to feature Tari a little bit too...but I think that's going to take some hard work in the off season from Tari. Some players just salivate to get in the gym and get better. We shall see.

Yes, definitely need multiple bigs. One of them has to be able to play starter minutes immediately, so that pretty much has to be a transfer. The other could be a high school or Juco guy. Just a body who can do some defending and pick up fouls. Both should be easy sells.

I think a transfer wing wouldn't be that difficult of a sell either. Davenport will likely still get a lot of time at the 4 because I can't see Eason consistently staying on the court for 30+ minutes in his second year. So that leaves 40 minutes at SG and probably 25 at SF to be split between the Madsens and MAW. Even if they all average 15, you've still got 20 minutes and a starting role to offer.

This Harvey situation can also show CJB decision to not go all out recruiting 2021 players during the covid year when he could not get in front of them and their families. He doesn't want the wrong players in the locker room. He took a swing on Harvey because he was late to the game in year 1. Now we see what can happen if the right mindset is not present in the recruit. I think John felt the need to catch up a little bit with some talent and may have broken one of his own tenets to do it.

I think Tari is a different situation than Harvey.

But I think overall coach is looking for skills and ability obviously that also comes along with work ethic, positive attitude, competitiveness, selflessness and being a good teammate, etc. The ALL IN guys. Those guys understand the system will work if everyone buys in...and that individual prosperity will follow when the system works.

Can CJB sell his system to the point that will be necessary? That is the big wait and see question. It's not looking great right now...but it's still possible. If I were betting I would say I don't like the chances...but I also think he deserves the chance to get some seniors and juniors (his recruits) to play for him to make the final call. Unless the train derails fully I am in for 4 years.

PG: DeJulius 30 / Saunders 10
SG: Transfer 10 / MAW 15 / Mason 15
SF: Davenport 10 / Transfer 15 / Gabe 15
PF: Eason 20 / Davenport 20
C: Transfer 25 / Diarra 10 / Eason 5

I'm thinking DeJulius and Davenport are the only guys who will play 30 minutes. There's 25 minutes available for both a center and a wing. The wing is more of a fluid situation, but minutes are there. It's essentially the role that I expected Harvey to take.

I can see that. But part of the problem is, and Cronin was well aware of it, that if you go out and grab a talented player to play a specific position...you could be sending a vote of non confidence to the current players. That is the tough part for a coach to manage. Recruiting over someone. It's easier done at the HS level but when you bring a transfer in...it's harder to explain.

At the 5...we have Lakhin who hasn't played at all. And Dou who coach has already shown a lack of confidence in. Easy sell here IMO.

I'd rather see maw get minutes over saunders at the 1... As of now.

It’s hard enough to get those guys that can come in and make an immediate impact, even harder when the team sucks. Most likely will be a 2020 recruit that didn’t work out. Maybe someone we missed on last year. Or someone like that. I doubt we get a guy that can make a difference immediately

Without a wing transfer we're probably looking at:

PG: DeJulius 30 / Saunders 10
SG: MAW 30 / Mason 10
SF: Davenport 10 / Mason 10 / Gabe 15
PF: Eason 20 / Davenport 20
C: Transfer 25 / Diarra 10 / Eason 5

MAW is already playing 30 minutes this year, so I'm sure Brannen wouldn't have a problem with him next year. I think we've got to have an upgrade there though.

Lol you just slotted a Jr MAW at 15 minutes a game. Get ready for another name in the portal if that’s the case

Yes I know. I'm fine with that. I want a winning team. MAW is not a 30 mpg player on a good team. Maybe he gets 20 if Gabe isn't ready or Mason only gets 10.

While I'd love a star impact transfer, that's not what I'm expecting. I want someone who is competent at center and can play 25 minutes in our league. I really hope we can find that. Wing is really where I'd like an upgrade, and generally there are more wings available. Maybe an upgrade over MAW is too much to ask, I don't know. He seems to have a low ceiling to me.

Does anyone have any insight on why a player would choose to opt out instead of leaving and entering the transfer portal right away ?

Or just wait a couple weeks. It really doesn’t make any sense to me. On any level. The year doesn’t count anyway, play basketball for a couple more weeks, then if he wants to leave, leave. It’s not like he’s getting ready for the draft
