Yeah, seems like he needs to take the next step on offense, or find an assistant who can coach offense for him. In one of the articles he referred to analytics and understanding the importance of three point shots.

Or maybe it just requires better players. We saw the huge jump Mick's offense made when he went to UCLA and got guys who can play offense. Hope Miller can make the same jump moving here.
Yep, it's one thing to understand the importance of the three point shot, and it's another to have a scheme that creates open three point opportunities. Same with shots at the rim. The very low assist rate means not many threes are open catch and shoot attempts, which is probably why their percentage is so bad. The very low foul rate (and shots blocked) means they aren't putting the defense in many compromising positions attacking the rim. Better players will obviously help with some of that, but I'd like to see him hire someone who will modernize the offense.

Unless you have the horses to run the races, teams that like to get up and down going struggle shooting ball. His biggest struggle early on until he win or unless he get well known local assistant going to recruiting tri state. It’s been 30yrs since we had coach that wasn’t local

Does anyone know what happened with Eric Martin? I’m excited about hiring Wes just curious as to why things shifted all of a sudden.

Per the Cincinnati enquirer article, it sounds like UC never contacted him again after his second interview (until the let him know he wasn't selected). Seems like the "contract negotiations" was actually just getting a feel for the numbers if they did go with him. All the other smoke was baseless.

Smokescreens. Whatever happened with JB was race related. UC made sure they checked every affirmative action box with this hire

Bingo

Are we still talking about guys that can’t score??

I'll be excited if/when Diarra comes back, even if none of the rest of you are.

But yeah, he seems to follow the Mick/Sampson model of chuck it up and go get it on offense. Though he seems willing to adjust, make changes and learn. One of the articles I linked talked about how he has developed as a coach. Seems like improving as an offensive coach is his next step and hopefully that also means getting a good offensive minded assistant.

So Eric was just the last resort?

So Eric was just the last resort?

I don't think he was last resort. It seems like he was in their top 3ish who got in person interviews (Gates may also have had an in person interview): Pedon, Martin and Miller.

I'm sure they discussed numbers at the end of each interview with their top targets. Then they sat down and made the decision of who they wanted. Miller was #1. Martin was probably #3.

Cronin 2.0?

Better be a better recruiter

Cronin was type 5 recruiter in country at time of his hire. I believe Zion had them on his top 5 though. I might give Cronin edge but not by much. He recruits locally though so this was HUGE GAMBLE with rayvon and lil Paul on horizon

Cronin 2.0?

Better be a better recruiter

Honestly he looked like Cronin 2.0 but better at recruiting. More willing to adjust his scheme to his players and also less of a micro manager on the court.

One of the articles I quoted said something along the lines of if you work your butt off he's willing to leave you in even if you make some mistakes.

But also perhaps worse offensively. Haven't really seen much talk about his offensive schemes other than chuck it and go get it.
