Definitely gotta go right at them since their lack of depth makes them less aggressive for fear of foul trouble.

Exactly. Even if we don't get them in foul trouble we must attack. I know SMU backs the paint but we must play inside out. Post up, male them double and then pass it out for clean looks. Gary needs to be agressive down low and not hover around the 3 point line. He can take anyone of their players.

won't be easy Jake because they will pack it in Until we can hit enough shots to make them guard us on the outside to create some space inside will be hard to come by As Coach pointed out the fact that they do have a short bench means they really don't pressure the ball much. They actually give you the perimeter shots and take away the inside. This limits their foul concerns. If we shoot it well we can win but without hitting some jumpers it will be tough. Made 12 threes in first game and still had to hang On. Really need our wings to step up. Sunday.

You know it is possible for this team to have been significantly luckier than last year AND also be a better team. Those aren't mutually exclusive.

I also don't buy into the idea that this team just hates to lose or knows how to win close games any more than teams in the past. Does anyone really think that basically the same group of guys who were bad last year at this particular part of the game just happened to figure it out now?

And I think a lot of the pushback vs "luck" is rooted in that most people are really bothered by the word and concept of "luck" in a lot of situations and don't truly realize just how much randomness impacts our lives, success, failures, etc.

Acknowledging how many external factors outside of one's own control play a huge role is humbling and it comes into play in sports, business, life, etc

Reading the Drunkard's Walk by Leonard Mlodinow might open some eyes.

I don't know man, KJ's pump fake is pretty bad too haha

Is it me or is Evans doing too much of the Shaq Thomas when he has the ball? Dribble side to side going no where. I love Cumberland's ability to make a move naturally, no unnecessary movement for the most part.

Agree...Cumberland is like one of those running backs who gets the ball and runs north/south - the goal is the goal & the quicker you get there, the better

I think Washington has a lot to do with our "luck"...Which I personally chalk up to maturity and experience. In the Tulsa game, that team with its newcomers was like us 2 years ago...no idea how to actually close out a win. They were waiting for us to press the issue. The difference for us is a guy like Washington played 2 years in the ACC and is a huge fan of the game (constantly observing what teams do in big situations). He's seen some pretty good players and teams that are long gone in 2017. Guys like Caupain, Johnson, and Clark played against 35-0 Kentucky, who many at the time tabbed as the best team ever. Those guys are all long gone. But our core still stands. They've been through it all. You have to go through some of that to know how to handle it imo (unless you have a roster full of lottery picks). And you can see that our guys have been able to keep their wits about them in crunch time. That kind of focus allows you to be proactive instead of reactive.

I agree Kyle is a big addition. He's a big part of why the team has jumped from +17 last year to +22. That's what I mean by being a better team. I just think we've also been 'somewhat' fortunate in close games ( not absurdly lucky or anything) and last year the team was effectively cursed/snake bit so the gap in luck from last year to this year it's fairly high

Very interesting. Thank you.

Yah...I agree 100%. Defense, defense, defense...followed by aggression, aggression, aggression. Come out confident not tentative. If the shots don't fall we can live with that...but take it to the hole early and often. Lock them down...and crush them!

Screw this close game talk...just bury them!!
We are the better team. Play like it.

Agreed 100%. Take the crowd out of the game. Play like champions. Hell we are undefeated in this league! Let's keep it that way. In the 400 meter hurdles that last hurdle is always the biggest. Let's clear this last hurdle and bust our butts to the finish line.

I think it is highly unlikely we win. First time this season I have felt that way. SMU just seems to be playing at another level. Still it is really hard to tell against this crappy competition. Is a 10 point win against an improving but crappy UCF team at home more or less telling then a 16 point win on the road against a rapidly falling and crappy temple team.

Last year opponents seemed to hit that big shot at the end of every game. This year they've missed them. I mean the Marshall game was nothing but luck to get to OT, smu missed 3 shots the last 44 seconds, 2 of them 3's, if Troy's shot vs Tulsa rims out that game goes to OT and it wasn't a shot he hits any more than 40% of the time.

We are the same team regardless of the outcome of those games, but we are on the lucky side to have won all 3.

It's funny how it's luck only when good things happen.
Opponent misses a shot = luck
We make a shot = luck
You make your own luck. Good defense causes people to miss wide open shots. They are rushed and plain tired from working their butts off to get open. We missed a lot of wide open shots against UCF because the big kid was looming around all night.

When teams hit every single shot last year it was bad luck (good luck for them). They were the same rushed and tired last year but all the shots went in.

The difference I see from last year in close games is we are much better offensively. This is why we are winning tight games.

So maybe Marshall was the lucky team, not us?

Us being much better on offense is why we were able to hang in that one with how hot Marshall was (they were lucky to shot that % but they are incredible shooters) but its pretty lucky to pull off a game when you were down 3 without the ball with 46 seconds and a fresh shot clock.

Sometimes the ball go in sometimes it don't. It's been like that as long as I can remember. I know if you practice for a longtime everyday it's goes in more often. I know if you stay right on the shooter they miss more often. Don't know what this is you speak of "you call luck".

Fatigue shouldn't be an issue. SMU played a day later and had to travel to Philly for it. They also have 4 players playing more minutes than anyone on our team. They have also played an additional game.

To win this game Jacob Evans has to have a dominant offensive game. It's about time for him to have a big game 25+ points. I wish Evans had some of Cumberland's aggressiveness- not to mention his ball fakes and change of speed. Cumberland's the best on the team with his pump fake' Evan's, might be the worst. That's how JC gets around people.
Chad was on Lance's show Friday. He was talking about how this team has a good mix. He said Kyle is always aggressive as we know. And the Troy is also very emotional/ aggressive?. He put Jacob with someone else I can't remember who, as being very laid back. But that's part of his personality. But he needs to get that Killer Instinct.
I was only able to catch part of it but it seems like a really good segment if somebody wants to listen to it. It was in the 4 o'clock hour.
