Let's just talk about circumstances rather than excuses. We did have more players than we thought we might. But Eason only played 12 minutes and Williams only 22. Banks, Mikey and Mason played a total of about 45 minutes after not practicing for almost a whole month. I would not have expected anything pretty to happen in this game. CJB said about the same thing and that we would just have to fight to win and that is what happened.

It just so happens that DD had been exposed to Covid a while back and so he was able to stay active and in relative game shape. That was pretty apparent.

Temple has won 3 games in conference so far so let's not take too much credit away from our team battling through adversity. Temple did not look good but we were playing some pretty good D for most of the night so we should get some credit for how bad they looked.

You'd think with all that time off some guys would at least practice free throws on their own. I was just glad to watch a game again. Effort was good and the defense looked a lot better. Hard to tell how good it really was against Temple though.
Lol same thing I told my wife! No excuses for that.

I thought Mason looked pretty solid out there. Played pretty good D, got a put back and 4 boards in 20 minutes. Also he had a couple of deflections that led to points. One that lead to a rebound and one that lead to a steal. He seems to have a pretty good nose for the ball and still looks very comfortable out there. He had a couple mistakes but overall a good showing for him. He needs to take some 3's if he's going to be out there though. He looked willing to make some plays off the bounce.

I expected to win last night.

That’s how poor I think temple is.

And we won. So that’s nice.

Weren’t we also the favorite to win?

Why not? You complain about Justin being nothing but rain, but you are nothing but rainbows. Temple played horrible and their coaching was bad enough that I bet a lot of Temple fans are not happy with McKie right now. We beat them and that's great (more than I and most of us expected), but they were terrible.

As for Rob Banks, he barely counts as a walk-on in my mind (could have had a low D-1 scholarship). I think he showed he should be getting minutes over Saunders and possibly Mason right now. Banks defended, he fought for rebounds and he brought the energy and intensity this team often lacks. He didn't contribute much on offense, but neither did anyone not named DeJulius, Davenport or Keith.

I don't know if Temple's players thought it would be a cakewalk game or their coaches are just that checked out. They looked less prepared than we were and that's saying a lot considering our long layoff. Look at their strategy of pounding the ball inside on Vogt, the entire play-book on attacking Vogt says make him defend the pick-and-roll, instead they just went at him on the interior (where he is good at defending).

DeJulius making threes and becoming more assertive was a nice positive and we had more players available than expected (the way Brannen talked I was expecting close to half the team to be out and Sam Martin to get minutes along with Banks). Besides that, there weren't many positives.
My main issue with Justin is that he was saying these things right after the guy was hired. Really never gave the guy a chance. He also simply makes things up and leaves things out to fit his argument. It’s nothing new, he’s been banned from message boards before.

I’m all for criticism if it’s fair. Be consistent. Don’t say, “it’s all on the coach”, in one sentence, or “ he’s can only get mid-major talent”, then completely change your argument and say, “well it’s different when cronin did it. Be consistent. There is plenty to criticize

Mason and mike Saunders have played maybe 60 total minutes and had limited practices. I thought they looked fine. They are going to take time to develop. I always look to see if players like that look completely overmatched, and to me, they do not. Mason actually looks aggressive and contributes some he’s played the Least amount of anyone

So when are we going to the sweet 16 or final 4? What's up with 21 recruiting? I'd prefer a recruit over a meaningless win in a covid ridden season. DD finally hit some shots, somebody who Brannen recruited actually played apart in influencing a win... who knew. Can he bring more of those type in here

Hard to go to the sweet 16 or final four when the one tournament we were going to got canceled but your right, should have found a way to win it.

Also, considering mick went to 1 sweet 16 in 12 years, brannen has plenty of time. Come back in 12 years then you might have an argument

At full strength I would expect to win...for sure

Harvey missed the whole game. Keith missed half. Eason missed 3/4ths. And of course Dou missed as well. We didn't practice in a month and went on our 3rd straight road game.

We ran with Vogt, Mason, Mike, and a walkon getting some significant minutes. I would not have made any bets in Vegas knowing that. Most of those are at the very end of our bench right now.

But Temple sucks and DD had a good game and that's about as much credit as we are going to give this team.

You keep comparing two obviously different situations with two different coaches. Why I don't knw?.. lol no its hard to get there when you have a losing record. The bars currently low, celebrating a 3 point win against temple these small little moral victories.. a win is a win but damn

Is anyone celebrating? Anyone?

I am! Whoo Hoo! Why not celebrate the return of Cincinnati Mens Basketball with an unconventional victory.

I was glad it was on ESPN 2, the announcers were totally not paying attention to the game until like the last 3 mins.

I am concerned that Eason does not have any post moves, but rather a guard/slasher mentality. With Vogt's confidence out of town, a left or right turning Eason on the block, should average 15 a game easy. Makes me wonder if post play is important to the current staff? No legit post play, then it will always be 1 on 1 city and hope for the best.

Honestly, Tari needs to figure that out before the coaching staff.

Tari is at the 5 by necessity rather than choice. I still think he should develop some post moves...but as soon as Brannen finds a suitable replacement that can play some D...he's back to the 4. Which would mean Davenport will be a 3 at that point. But it won't be this year obviously. I would imagine we are going to be looking for a transfer 5 who can defend.

If Tari has NBA Aspirations he better wake up, and take this game by the horns.

Brannen and staff need to force him into the post period. Doesn't matter if he's a 3,4,5,6,7,8,9, or 10 lol.

The lack of 30 interior points a night will always doom us, in regard to spacing and continuity.

To be honest, I don't care how bad Vogt has been playing, at minimum he should get 10 post touches a half. Watching the game yesterday the opportunities where there, the ball was barely thrown to him.

This makes life on the wing miserable for anyone, and has somewhat contributed to the demise of Keith "I can't Keep My Hands off you Williams" lol
due to nobody being worried about our bigs.

Hell we aren't even concerned with our bigs, how can we attract a big man or Big Men when the ball no longer enters the post unless it's desperation.

We currently play like we are a 60% 3 pt shooting Team.

I don’t think Vogt is very good at sealing his guy. Hard to throw it in there if the guys aren’t sealed.

I don’t think Tari is close to ready for the nba. I think him and his mom might think different but he has to improve on his ballhandling, shooting, and basically everything. He has ideal size and athleticism but the skills aren’t there yet. I think they could be in another year. Post moves are a thing of the past in my opinion

These guys won't be in game shape/form for another week or two. Hopefully we can win 1 of the 2 road games coming up (would rather both obviously). And then when we get back home would like to be at full strength for the stretch run.

If we can get Harvey of the last 4 games
Something close to DD this past game
Keith upping his game just a bit
Davenports consistency, effort and excitement
And Eason continuing to improve

That is a team that can win just about any remaining game if those things happen. It seems to be coming along in bits and pieces. The layoff didn't help. But the lineup above is something I am excited about.

Still a lot of questions and consistency/confidence issues. Tough to predict what we are going to witness coming up. Can CJB get this team to respond? I thought the effort and energy we brought to Philly was a good sign.

Tari is being held back from shooting or dribbling too much to keep him from turning the ball over. So yes...we might as well post him up a lot or pick n roll. At 37% FT shooting Vogt is gonna get hacked every time and his defense hurts us anywhere but the paint. Eason is good for 5 man out motion. Davenport has not been bad at getting the ball in the hole when he is in or around the paint. His footwork and instinct is better right now.

The guys did seem intrested and engaged. Let's just wrap this season up as soon as possible
