CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati will break ground on its $15.5 million Jefferson Avenue Sports Complex on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 from 2-2:30 p.m. The event is not open to the public.
The event is scheduled to take place at the Jefferson Avenue Sports Complex construction site, located on Jefferson Avenue between Corry Boulevard and Daniels Hall.
Plans include two practice fields: a 100-yard practice field that can be converted into an indoor facility via an inflatable “bubble,” and an additional 50-yard practice field. The fields will serve the university’s varsity sports programs, functioning as the competitive home of the women’s lacrosse team and as an integral part of the Greater Cincinnati community. The state-of-the-art Jefferson Avenue Sports Complex will play a vital role in recruiting the nation’s best and brightest student-athletes to the University of Cincinnati.
Scheduled to take part in the event are Dr. Gregory H. Williams, President of the University of Cincinnati, Director of Athletics Mike Thomas, head football coach Butch Jones, head women's lacrosse coach Lellie Swords, and Larry Sheakley, CEO of the Sheakley Group and University of Cincinnati supporter.
This is the first phase of construction on the facility, expected to be complete in September 2010. A second phase is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2011, pending necessary funding.
Fundraising to support the Jefferson Avenue Sports Complex is part of the university’s Proudly Cincinnati campaign to raise $1 billion by 2013.
