I wasn't able to watch the game but just looking at the stats it seemed like a typical game against them. Our offense against good defensive teams continues to worry me going into March. Yes, UCF is a good defensive team but we were the 4th lowest scoring team against them this year. That's not good. We have to be better when we go against teams with good offense and defense if we want to get where we're going.

We can play whatever game a team wants to play with us. Was the UCLA game ugly? Or SMU? Right.... we take what they give us and we can beat them at their own game. That's the takeaway.

you just have to be impressed really. i feel like last night is a game we lose in the past. the USF game is one we used to struggle with till the bitter end. we ended up running away with it.

something about this team.

something about this team.

This was a gritty win. There is no quit in Gary or Jacob (or the team really). Cumberland can effect the game without scoring a lot. Washington is always positive. Cane seems very confident in his ability and seems to like being in those big moments. Jenifer is always hustling as is our bench.

We have won several games with offense but we have now won a few with straight defensive performance. It is concerning that we struggle to get into a flow early on sometimes. I can't put my finger on it but we have looked completely out of sync in a couple games early on. Nobody seems to know what a good shot looks like in those situations and we start to press a little bit hoping someone sparks a scoring run. I guess a few guys try to hard to score and we take some ill advised shots. Eventually we come around...but we need to get that resolved for March.

I still think we get some pretty good looks early, it's like the guys aren't pff a little too tense at times. We are getting open shots, just not hitting them. I agree that could be a reason for concern. You don't want to get in a hole to a really good team.

Like you I had hoped we would have been a bit better offensively but this wasn't just a good defense we were facing but a top 5 defense. They did their beast to ugly up the game but in the end our talent and resolve on defense paid off with enough offense to overcome their game. On their floor I might add. League road wins are never easy.

Something Cronin said recently (and I think Evans) kind of sticks with me. We have to make the other team "uncomfortable" so they don't make as many of their shots. We were extremely uncomfortable to start this game but we ended up making them more uncomfortable in their own gym.

I think this team is looking at defense now as a huge weapon and a badge of honor. There can be no doubt left in any of their heads that we can win games with D. I really think they have bought in 100% to this idea and they should. I think these guys really want to be the best defensive team in the country and it's really starting to show. Being able to score is becoming a secondary weapon. They have been in full lock down mode for quite some time.

We are holding conference opponents to 50 ppg!! That is insane.

One thing that I have noticed this year, unlike any others, is that I never feel like this team isn't going to come back and win. We have made the necessary adjustments at half time and overall just performed well in the 2nd half of most of our games. We could have been down 15 last night at half and I would have still been confident in a comeback. This team has grit and determination and is clearly led by Gary and Jake.

The block by Evans was ridiculous by the way. Not sure how many people watched the replay but look where he came from. What a good athlete. I felt like he was rushing his shot at times last night. But I'm glad he kept shooting and I'm glad his competitiveness carries over into all aspects of the game regardless of his scoring.

Clark, Evans, and Cumberland all play like they have no idea how many points they have. Sounds silly, but that's not where a lot of guys are. It's hard to get so swept up in the game that you basically don't even remember some parts until afterwards. So many guys need a bucket or 2 to have any confidence and to get in the game at all. Kevin Johnson was like that for a lot of his career. I thought Jermaine Sanders was too. Not to call those guys out, but there's just such a difference in offensive mentality. These guys play so many minutes they know the shots will be there if they stay ready. And as a result we have good flow. We don't always knock them all down, but no one can argue that we don't at least get a decent look. And worst comes to worst, guys like Broome and Washington can get a shot at least on the rim in basically any amount of time late in the clock, regardless of how tightly they're beging guarded. Good options on this team. Great competitive spirit.

evans is great but he's a byproduct of the system. this guy needs 1 more year to bulk up and learn his dribble

If Evan stays it's because we didn't make far in the tourney IMO. He's on the big stage dropping 18-24 pts against UNC in the sweet 16. That's what we want and that at the same time that will give him his best exposure.

He needs to tighten up his dribbling, but offensive aggressiveness is why he will stay until next year. Opening up the new arena with him would be special.

Yeah he could cap off a really special career and leave no doubt that he's a great pro prospect. He's getting to the point where he realizes he can get a shot whenever and make it from wherever. A SR year as the main guy could make him a Top 20 pick imo. Even if we make a run, he could build on that and make sure he's ready to help an NBA team rather than just make a roster.

he can't dribble is why he will stay..

I would not say this. He can dribble...he just has trouble creating separation. He doesn't have a great step back. He doesn't have a great change of pace move. He doesn't do well when he gets contact. He can work on those things but I don't think he has trouble handling the rock.

Cumberland has way less ball skills but he has great instinct and doesn't mind contact. He knows the step back etc. I don't know how much of that Jacob can learn next year or this year. A lot of that comes down to instinct and feel.
