I remember Huggs saying after the Jarrod West shot in the UC-WVa tourney game "I don't mind getting beat, but you don't want to lose on a throw". It galls me to hear about how some kid heaving a 60 footer in is some kind of testament to UConn's tourney moxie or a platitude to "clutch". Call it what it was: a 1 in 10,000 shot aided by the clock operator and officials too afraid to do the right thing and go against the UConn narrative.
Hard not to feel snakebitten. I wasn't watching the game quite yet but texting with my brother, he told me the game was still on so I assumed overtime. Actually told him I expected the worst, and even said I envisioned UC with a 2 point lead and UConn heaving in some miracle 3. It's insane how often it happens.
I can count a handful of times we've either directly or indirectly lost a game involving the opposition heaving in an improbable shot that led to a buzzer beating loss or overtime loss. 1996 Arizona (Miles Simon), 1998 West Virginia (Jarrod West), 2006 Syracuse (Gerry McNamara), 2010 West Virginia (Da'Sean Butler), and Tulsa/UConn this year. 6 times in 20 years? Seriously?
